A Work of Art
I'm 77 years old and have been continuously using backpacks since Cub Scouts. This is by far the finest pack I have ever owned, and I've had many! It has every missing feature I wished my previous packs had. Ever had to mod your pack with zip-tie attachment points, or bungee on tools to zipper pulls only to have them flop around or lose them? Not with this one. It's all there, right out of the box. It is absolutely PERFECT for rock and ice and mountaineering. And it's just as suitable for a light day roaming the flatlands. I've only had it a short time but I can already see that my workhorse tried-and-true packs are getting retired.
Incredible pack
This pack is by far my favorite backpack I've ever had for all the mountain sports I do. I originally bought this pack just for mountaineering, but I quickly discovered that it performs amazingly well for pretty much all mountainous activities. I hike more than I mountaineer, so this pack has been my daypack for both summer and winter hikes for more than two years now, and I have always loved it. It is amazingly spacious, so I never struggle to fit all my gear into the pack, whether it be just layers and water or a full set of mountaineering gear—and no matter how much gear I stuff in to/attatch onto this thing, it always carries the weight like a pro. Plus, it is amazingly comfortable and never rocks around. It literally feels like it is glued to my back when I am wearing it! My favorite part of this pack has to be the features. The one I appreciate the most is the dedicated external helmet carry system, which allows you to securely attach a helmet to the top or front of the pack. There is a dedicated spot for the pick of your ice ax/tool to slide in to, which is awesome for securing one or two axes without the pick wiggling around while you move. There are two daisy chains along the front of the pack, which I have used for a multitude of uses (including drying wet socks!), and the hip belts have gear loops that I put tons of stuff on. The pack has so many awesome little features that making adventuring with it just so much nicer. Overall, this is a bomber pack that will serve you well in all your mountain adventures, from easy day hikes to technical roped ascents. I've used it for snowshoeing, summer mountaineering, couloir ascents, trad climbing (in winter!), short day hiking, technical mountain scrambling, ice climbing, and so much more, and it is showing no signs of wear or tear. The only thing I haven't gotten to use it for yet is Ski Mountaineering, but it has ski carry straps on the sides and carries loads amazingly well, so I am not worried. If you are looking for a backpack to take you literally anywhere in the mountains, buy this.
Excellent long-approach, all-day multi-pitch pack
I recently purchased a Mutant 38 and love it. It is built with durable, yet light material, with reinforcements at key points. While it's not "ultralight" in its stock form, dropping the brain and rigid backplate brings it to a very respectable 26oz, which is pretty darn light! The fit is excellent for climbing (the hip belt rides above a harness) and there is a ton of flexibility for attachments. Most importantly to me, the pack compresses down on itself very well, so it doubles as a larger capacity haul-in pack, but then cinches up small on your back for multi-pitch climbs with light gear.
Excellent Pack!
Great pack, very light and straps in all the right places. Some really nice features that I’ve not seen on packs before such as strap tidies to stop them flapping in wind.
Excellent, well-designed multi-pitch pack

A Bomber Pack!
Absolute wicked pack, ready to get down on solid type two fun and summit the gnarly.
New bag day!
Exactly as expected, brilliant. Bought this to replace my old Mutant 38 ( which was given to my eldest son). Super happy.
Everything I had hoped for
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Everything I had hoped for and more! I have been a P/T rock and ice climbing guide for the past thirty years and was the fortunate owner of a Mutant 28 zip-top pack for 10+ years (used summer and winter). Unfortunately, this pack was stolen from the back of my car this past August, with my entire rock rack contained within it (grrr!). Given all the positive experiences I had over time with that pack, I decided to replace it with the updated and larger 38L current version. Though I have only used it twice during the past week, it far exceeded my expectations. It is light, sleek, simple, versatile, well-designed, and carries heavy & bulky loads with ease and comfort. It has everything I want and nothing more - just what anyone would want in a backpack!!
This is my goto bag
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is my goto bag for mountaineering. It carries comfortably, even with heavy loads, and every pocket, strap and feature is exactly what I want. With the exception of adding a hip belt pocket for snacks. Just took it up Rainier last weekend. My one big complaint- the hip belt is not long enough! Ok for men maybe, but this lady needs just one more inch. I sometimes have bruises right where the belt ends. Please fix this Osprey, and you’ll have the perfect bag!
Overall a very good pack,
Overall a very good pack, which I’ve used on several Scottish winter mountain days so far. This is my second Mutant 38 pack and I think that the first one may have a bit more capacity. Also, I prefer the helmet enclosure on the older pack as it has a zip rather than Velcro fastener. A good mountaineering sack which I would recommend. If more capacity is required the 52 litre version may be an option.
