Bought this for some fastpacking and packrafting. Always has great luck with Salomon vests and packs, but thought I’d give UD a chance since it seems like quality athletes and adventurers use their gear. Was super disappointed though. The minute I pulled the pack out of the bag the toggle that cinches on the flask pockets broke with first squeeze. Worse than that though the zipper pockets on the chest for a phone don’t actually fit a phone? You even see in the product photos a phone getting placed in one of the pockets, but there is no way that phone actually fit. Super misleading photo. I have an iPhone XS in a slim case, which is fairly small to normal size these days, and there is no way to cram it in no matter the angle. The pockets don’t stretch at all. My Salomon vest easily takes a phone in that location and it’s one of the best things about it. Will be buying an XA 25 or 35 instead and returning this.
Just got it as an early Christmas present and tested it in rough conditions: snow, ice. I packed it to the brink with extra clothes, crampons, helmet, ice axe and the likes for an 8-hour outing and the pack performed admirably. Love the opening system [top and side], how light it is compared to my previous pack and cannot wait for spring to start so I can take it on extra-long scrambles all over Washington State. The strap pockets are a major plus for someone like me who likes to get into a rythme and not stop to get my sunglasses out, my water etc. I just wish [and I am being vain here] that there were more color schemes offered ;)
This is the best of both worlds, a proper pack but with the front pockets of a running vest. When it's all cinched down, it's around 12L and easy to run in. When you need more room, its 30L is plenty of space. I used this for a one day Rim-to-Rim in the Grand Canyon and it was perfect. The only thing I don't love about it is how the straw comes out for your bladder. Instead of coming out on the side, it comes out straight up the middle. Not a deal breaker, but kind of odd and not as comfortable or convenient as the ones that come out more over your shoulder rather than up your neck.
I’ve put this thing through the ringer and it has fought hard through it all. A lot of the complaints I’ve read about it are all tolerable. I’ve done day hikes and scrambles and even got it caught in sharp rocks. Unfortunately it has been introduced to a few too many sharp rocks and has a few holes in it. That said, it’s lasted longer than any other pack I’ve used for scrambling so I’m getting another one. It’s also good for events like concerts and car shows, I can pack this sucker to the brim with all sorts of gear. I’m getting another one so of course I recommend it to anyone out there. Just try it and see…
I'm genuinely surprised by the negative reviews on here. I do a lot of fast packing, course sweeping/marking(50k+), and abuse the heck out of my fastpack bags. They hold up extremely well and are very comfortable. I carry 20+lbs of signage, stakes, ribbons, groceries, etc regularly with this bag. I have zero issues and it is very comfortable considering how lightweight it is. I can't remember zippers ever coming open while it's stuffed full. One thing to remember is that Salomon and UD have different philosophies to materials and how to hold your equipment. Salomon prefers to have stretchable material for everything, which I've found to not last super long and eventually rips. UD doesn't have that problem. As long as you don't puncture the outer material on a UD bag it should last a very long time. My phones(Samsung and iPhone) fit fine in the pockets, so I'm not sure what that person's problem was. The only reason I have to keep buying more of these bags is because my car keeps getting broken into and they get stolen. I've never had a UD Fastpack bag develop a hole or had a zipper break.
But in the end I couldn't. Perfectly adequate as a backpack, but the vest features up front were more frustration that feature. Very little room, the flasks were far too high, and the material didn't have the stretch needed to accommodate any creative storage up front. Swing and a miss.
When I have traveled somewhere, I like to have a day bag packed in my suitcase and carry what I would need either for a hike or going to an amusement park. I got a M/L as a curvy Latina and it was a prefect fit. I first saw this bag on insta from @kayli.king backpacking videos what in my bag videos before her 5month Asia trip.
It wasn’t the most comfortable pack with 20+lb loads. Two buckles broke on the trip (didn’t pull that hard) and all of the pockets needed to be 10-20% deeper. Items like water flasks, and water bottles just didn’t fit or would fall out. Also, other packs have angled pockets which would have helped. There are a lot of small pockets for snacks, first aid, headlamps, etc. If you have the pack at maximum capacity the side zipper started to unzip and had to tie the two zippers together.
I have a hydration vest for day jaunts, but I needed a pack for a overnight fastpacking hike in the mountains of Idaho so I bought this pack so I could carry enough gear for ultralight camping. It was a huge disappointment. I did a weigh-in fully loaded and I had a little over 15 pounds total for pack, water, and gear, and the lack of a proper waist belt put pretty much ALL the weight on my shoulders. Early on in day one, I could immediately feel the lack of weight transfer, and a few hours in my shoulders were sore. No adjustments to the pack to move the weight down to my waist where it needs to be with a full pack. The additional design defect on this pack is they have a side zipper on the main pack I suppose for easy access, but in practice, if you have this pack fully loaded, the pressure of the packed down gear will push on the zipper, and opening up the side of the pack. I had to use a carabiner to keep the two zippers from opening up when I was moving after the first time my sleeping bag popped out when I was moving There is no way you can get a modern cell-phone in the zippered pockets. I had to carry mine in one of the other open pockets. The bottom pockets are deep enough and the phone never came out, but certainly would prefer to have it zippered in. If you're looking for a pack that can carry a decent amount of gear for a fast hike, this is not it. I will be returning this
