I needed a dark pan to use in/on my solar cookers. Dark pans absorb more light for heat. I do not like unhealthy aluminum or teflon coated pans. This pan is very naturally non-stick. I like that the handle is removable for fitting in my solar ovens and it takes up less space for car camping. Carbon steel is much lighter than cast iron, but still heavier than most camping pans. For car camping that's fine. It is thinner than cast iron, so heats up faster. I have the 8" pan which is fine for one maybe 2 people who eat light, but I needed the 10" for us (we eat larger meals). Some people may find washing carbon steel fussy, but basically give it a good scrub with water and minimal soap, dry well then put a thin layer of oil and it's good to go. Be aware that acidic things like lemon or tomatoes can ruin the nonstick seasoning that has been built up. For acidic foods I use the dark enamelware pots/pans. I use a silicon handle cover for safety. Some people have commented that the handle edge is hard on the hands, but the silicon cover or oven mitts take care of that. I really like this pan and use it in the home kitchen as well. It works very well with my solar cookers/ovens.
I think this belongs in your kit-kitchen. It packs away small and works as well as any carbon steel pan. In the house or camper, take handle off and it fits in my toaster oven making it very useful. Handle is stable but could of had the corners rounded more for more comfort is the only knock on this pan (as one reviewer stated in a vid). I have the 10" pan and lids from other pans fit inside which works for me. Heats fast works on induction hobs and the handle being removable is genius. On the grill take handle off for space saving and have a cool handle when moving it on-off the grill. First time with eggs no sticking and I tried using high heat. Heat control (less heat) is the best way to control sticking and oil. Use oils not spray for better experience.
Was looking for an alternative to a cast iron pan for our overland camp kitchen. Weight was a huge issue for me and this carbon steel pan with removable handle fit the bill. The space saving handle fits into our limited storage in my 4Runner and now we have a carbon pan big enough to cook for our family of 4. We primarily use it in our gas stove but if needed we will definitely use it in an open fire some day. Easy to clean and maintain. The black preseason from the factory is still holding up just fine.
This pan is our staple for outdoor cooking. We have a small grill for on-the-go and with other pans, the handle always gets in the way. The removeable handle and pre-seasoned pan make it perfect for smoking and roasting delicate items on the grill.
excellent quality except the handle is a bit odd feeling in the hand, needed a light sanding with ultra fine grit to smooth the edges now it's my favorite pan.
The pan is Great. I even use it at home. LOVE the detachable handle, let's me throw it in the oven to finish or even to just roast with. But the handle is not only u contoured it's sharp. No enough to cut but it is painful to hold the weight of the pan, nevermind what's in it. I have to wrap a kitchen towel around the handle when moving the filled pan.
This pan has been great so far. It is non stick and I don’t have to worry about scratching off any non stick coating due to its being carbon steel. The pan cleans up well and hold up to some abuse, it’s very sturdy and light weight. I wanted to stay away from aluminum and this was one of the lighter weight options. The handle reverses for storage which is also very nice. I gave four stars because it’s gets so hot that burning the food can be an issue if you are not watching it. I like it so much that I may buy another for cooking in larger groups, but this works well for the four of us.
I had high hopes for this as my camping skillet, but ended up disappointed. The pan developed surface rust during its first trip. After a hand washing to remove the rust, the nonstick was gone. Eggs stick like crazy, etc. Attempts to "re-season" with cooking oil and heat failed. A product return in-store was denied as wear and tear. My mistake, I suppose. It seems this pan requires very careful maintenance, just like cast iron. That may or may not work with your camping style.
This OXO pan is an all-around good fry pan. It is the right size for a gas tabletop cooktop. The detachable handle is nice for storing in tight space (though it is a bit annoying that the handle wiggles in use).
Probely one of the best car camping / kayaking camping fry pans i have used. A little heavy for some to hike camp with, but a great all around fry pan.
