Great shoe, good job on the redesign

I admit I prefer the look of the previous version of the Sawtooth, but otherwise this is my favorite hiking shoe. I compared this to the Merrell Ventilator and Keen Targhee Vent that I also wear: The Oboz have a significantly stiffer sole, and so are more comfortable hiking on gravel and trail. The squishy feel of the Merrell and Keen soles are ok for casual, and pavement, but for heavy hiking I really prefer the sole on the Oboz. It feels much more sure-footed, and I feel in more control of my stride. The stiffer sole is really a great advantage for much of the hiking I do.
After 50 miles of gravel and trail, I have no complaints about the quality or fit of this shoe. The toe box is comfortable. Not as obviously roomy as the Keen, but nothing matches Keen for this. But a big improvement over the Merrell. I've worn the Merrells for many years, and have bought many pairs. The Merrell Ventilator is the coolest shoe for my hot feet, but for some reason the toe box is feeling more cramped now then before, and the sole uneven under my foot. These Oboz have no problem at all. In general, I'd rate the 3 shoes this way:
Oboz: allround best for hiking, having the surest footing, comfortable sole that shields sharp gravel, and good fit. The build quality seems fine so far (50+ mi of hiking). I'm 220lbs, and really appreciate the stiff sole. The only drawback I can tell with the redesigned Oboz is the look; the previous design looked more rugged, and I wasn't shy about treading through harsh environments. The redesign is prettier to look at, but maybe when they look more worn I'll get over the change in design.
Keen: great fit, looks good for wearing around the office. The softest, squishiest sole of the 3. Probably great for working and walking on hard, paved surfaces. Generally good for trail, but I prefer the sure-feel of the trail underfoot that the Oboz give, compared to the much bouncier feel of the Keens.
Merrell Ventilators: a long-time classic for many reasons. They are the coolest to wear for warm feet. The sole is closer to the squishy feel of the Keen than the stiff Oboz, I can feel the gravel poking through the soles. In recent years I've noticed the fit just is no longer as good as the Keen and Oboz. My toes are cramped, and my feet feel like I'm always pushing against one side of the shoe or the other. I've tried going up a size, but it still just doesn't have the secure feeling of the other two shoes. I might be wearing my last pair of Ventilators.
For all shoes, I wear the factory supplied insoles for a short time, then switch to Superfeet Green insoles. I often just take the Superfeet out of an old, worn out pair of shoes and put them in the new pair. For each shoe, even an old pair of Superfeet are significantly cooler and more comfortable to wear than the factory insoles after breaking them in..

NOboz Sawtooth X

Oboz chose to celebrate 10 years of Sawtooth with its X (10) creation, shelving its tried and true earlier versions of the past 10 years. The X proved uncomfortable, couldn’t lace it to hold my heels in place and didn’t quite fit to size. After 10 years of wearing Sawtooths, now have to find competitor. Maybe Oboz will realize error of its ways and soon reintroduce “Classic Sawtooth” to recapture the likely thousands of customers who are moving on from Oboz.
I hike STEEP nasty trails, and the older model Traverse were great for that, but along came the sawtooth, and I had problems with traction going down the steep nasty trail...ended up in some scary slips! BUT! The sawtooth going uphill was AMAZING. Awesome. So, I just bought the Sawtooth X, the new model. I took it up the nasty steep trail and back down. Same great stiff and tough sole, --maybe a bit less "drop", it charged right up the hill and NO slipping on the way back down! I'm so glad they changes the heel! There's a bit less lugs on the ball of the foot, but hey, the Heel part works! I love 'em.

Failed “upgrade” of a timeless design
I was excited when I learned they were releasing a new design of my favorite pair of shoes - the Sawtooth II. Unfortunately this new style doesn’t live up to my expectations. Ordered the same size I’m used to and they weren’t close to fitting. Tried two other pairs and did not find one that was comfortable. Maybe I need a full size smaller and a wide size now? The construction is not impressive either. The portion where the upper meets the sole had extra material sticking out on every pair I tried. You can even see it in the REI stock photo.
Really wanted to like these and am really bummed I just can’t get behind them.

New design
These shoes have had a significant redesign.
Eyelets instead of loops for laces. Laces are flat instead of round. Old round laces used to come undone frequently. The new laces seem a bit weak and the aglets are weak and may break down.
Less mesh on the new shoes makes the shoe feel stiffer and may reduce breathability.
Insoles still seem the same. I usually replace them with sturdier insoles we after about 30-50 miles (1week) of walking.
The soles are different and I hope will last longer than the old design.
I walk about 1,200 miles a year and with a new pair of insoles the old design of these shoes lasted me about a year before wearing through at the outermost heal.

love but had some wear issues.
I truly loved these shoes but the stitching failed around the toe guard after about 60 days. I am hoping it was a glitch and would really like another pair. They were very comfortable and no, my little toe was not pushing on the fabric in that location. Also, there is a rubber coating added to the fabric on the side of the show between the heal guard and the toe guard. That rubber coating just slowly wore away as I wore them for city walking. I dont think it does anything other than help with the design -the swoosh of the angle of the heal guard piece as it comes across the side of the shoe.

Oboz Brand... from good to mediocre in 2 years?
I'm under-impressed with this purchase. I purchased a pair of Oboz hiking boots 6 years ago. While they're clearly showing their age, they're hanging together. These Sawtooth X hiking shoes are another story. Only 2 years old and they're nearing total collapse. The seams are splitting, the glue is failing, and the soles are nearly destroyed. I have used these much less aggressively than the boots, but they're just about to hit the trash can because they're too old to be returned. Based on this experience I likely won't buy another pair of Oboz.

Why did they change
If you've been a long fan of this shoe beware , they changed it and not for the better. I've been a long time fan of the Sawtooth Low Hiking shoe , to the tune of 6 pairs over the last 4 years .
I recently purchased these thinking they haven't changed in all the years I have bought them but how mistaken was I . I don't understand why these shoe companies change the fit and comfort of known best sellers.
They went from being the most comfortable hiker I've worn to the most uncomfortable , unsupportive shoe IMO ever .
I have to track down old stock or find something totally new , either way I am unhappy with these hikers .

New Model No Longer Fits My Foot.
I just tried the new style on and they no longer fit. Way to tight across the toes. Might be due to the additional leather in the front. But after eight pairs they do not fit any more. Sad that I have to find another brand to wear. Loved them before.
Note my last model was warmer than the one before that when you could feel a breeze through the mesh on a cool day. My water proof VII's are real hot and I only wear them outside.
Also note that my last model held up better in the toe area. All my previous versions eventually failed up on top of the toe.
But I can't wear a shoe that no longer fits well. My foot might have changed a little but I don't think that is the issue with these. On this pair, I can barely get my foot in, have to loosen up the laces all the way down. Then the arch support is too far back and I have a gap between my arch and toes that is unsupported.
Its disappointing that a brand you have used for over 10 years changes their product that you loved so much. These were my go to every day shoes for over 10 years. Always looked forward to a new pair. Until now.

New model is terrible quality
I have worn this shoe model for years. Design and price changed slightly, but when I saw a 50% price increase, I decided to buy two pairs of the shoe I thought I would wear after my current pair wore out.
Big mistake. When finally I wore this new model, I quickly discovered what poor quality it was. First pair blew out a seam within a few months of use. The soles were more worn out than an older model I have kicking around that I had used for a year. I returned these, but the same thing happened with the second pair. This time the return window had closed.
Really disappointed. I will not take a risk at getting burned again. Never going to buy another Oboz shoe.

Inexplicably bad rework of a popular style
1 year ago
The previous Sawtooth I and II, which I can’t find anymore, were great. Fit perfectly out of the box, laced up with one tug. The new “Sawtooth”, which resembles the old Sawtooths in name only, is hard to lace up, just doesn’t fit as well or have the same support. I’m at a loss understand why they took a popular, successful design and frankly botched it.
Waiting for Oboz to hopefully bring back the old Sawtooth, and if they insist on keeping the X, at least stop calling it an Oboz Sawtooth.

So different from Sawtooth II
Previous Bridger and Sawtooth II user. Tried these on at my local REI (Boulder) and after a 10 minute walk around the store made the purchase. The footbed had the same feel as previous models but once I put them to the test on the sidewalks and trails they were killing my feet. The pressure on my instep was unbearable and I had to loosen the laces to where it was like wearing a loafer. That was a problem then with heel slippage. I tried again after a couple days when the pain subsided but same issue. Went back to my old Sawtooth II's and no more problems, Ordered a pair of Sawtooth II's from the factory and after several days in them all pain is still gone. Tried the Sawtooth X again around the house today and the soreness in the instep is soon felt. It is obvious when viewed side by side that the lacing gap in the X's is about one inch more that the II's. The Sawtooth X's will be donated to the shelter and I'l order another pair of Sawtooth II's before they're discontinued.
