Great Tent with some Minor Dings Compared Kingdom

I am coming from the Kingdom 6 tent, which I believe is the previous version of this tent. The Kingdom 6 tent is a great tent that sets a very high bar. I can’t help but compare these two tents for this review because they are so similar.
To summarize this review, the Wonderland 6 tent is a fantastic tent in terms of material and build quality and handling different weather conditions. There are a couple lacking features and design choices that take away one star from this review, but it is overall a great tent that I would still recommend.
For starters, I am an avid car camper who typically camps 10-20 nights per year. I have a family of 4, including 2 small children. We typically camp in mild weather at campgrounds, but occasionally get some rain or even a heavier storm. For this review, we did a short camping trip in mild weather. We got a little wind with maybe up to 10 mph gusts at the max.
Material and Build Quality:
I have used a variety of different tents before from car camping tents to ultralight backpacking tents, and I am very impressed with the fabrics, poles, and other pieces for car camping. The fabrics for the tent fly and body appear to be durable without being too thick and heavy. The big improvement to me is the new tent poles. The poles on the Kingdom 6 tent were one of the weakest points, and I always worry about bending a pole during setup and teardown. The poles on the Wonderland are robust and well designed. Time will tell how they perform, but I think they are a big improvement over the Kingdom.
Size and Space:
The size was great for fitting our queen size air mattress, a Pack N’ Play crib, and another kids sleeping bag, plus all of our clothes and gear. The tent is spacious for a 6 person tent, and seems very similar in terms of floor space compared to the Kingdom 6. The ceiling height is noticeably taller than the Kingdom 6. This wasn’t a big deal for my family, but this tent is even more a good option for tall people.
Weather Resistance:
I did not get a chance to test the tent in inclement weather, but I can try to give an evaluation based on my experience. The tent withstood the small amount of wind that it experienced without any swaying, and I did not even stake out all of the provided guylines. I believe it will withstand significantly more wind, and it should perform better than the Kingdom 6 based on the improved poles. I did not get a chance to test the water resistance.
Side Windows:
The fun, new feature on this tent is the mesh side windows on the sides of the tent. They provide a great opportunity to have a nice view at sleeping bag height from inside your tent. My kids loved the windows to look inside or outside the tent, and they kept running up to me to say hi through the windows while I was setting up the bedding inside. The Kingdom tent was prone to get hot inside when in the sun, and the side windows should also help with ventilation to help improve comfort inside.
Negatives to the Tent:
There are a few changes or missing features that lead me to remove one star from this review.
First, the vestibule is gone as a standard feature. The vestibule on the Kingdom 6 was a spot feature for keeping wet or dirty items covered but not inside the tent. It was also needed for keeping clothes and shoes dry in the rain. I am bummed not to have this, and I will likely buy the vestibule as an add-on if REI offers it.
Second, the mesh storage pockets are less useful because they are all higher up and cannot be reached from my sleeping bag. I always unloaded my pockets, headlamp, etc into the mesh pockets when going to sleep, but you would have to get out of your sleeping bag to get anything from there. I wish some of the pockets had stayed low so that I can use them from my sleeping bag.
Third is the storage sack for the Wonderland 6. The storage sack on the Kingdom 6 was one of my favorite features because it had separate storage compartments and was very easy to put the tent back into even if it was loosely rolled up. The storage sack on the Wonderland 6 tent is one main compartment for the fly and body. The sack is a little smaller and easier for packing, but it was unfortunately difficult to pack the rolled up fly and tent body back in. It may get easier with practice, but I will miss the old storage sack.
This is overall a great tent that I plan to use for the years to come. If REI sells a vestibule add-on, I will personally get it to go with the tent.

Disappointing upgrade

The REI Wonderland Tents appear to be the "upgrade" to the member-favorite Kingdom series. It is a mystery why this happened. The Wonderland Tent does away with features that made the Kingdom a go-to for family camping. Ample interior pockets? Gone. Most egregiously, the rain fly around (not over!) the gimmicky triangle floor level ventilation window is such a clear design flaw that we're wondering how anyone at REI let the idea go forward. This is a tent for music festivals and parties... but even social media influencers don't want holes in the side of their tent during a windy rain storm. Do better, REI.
Overall we loved the tent!
We were in RMNP with several days of sustained high winds (including pockets of rain/snow) - with gusts up to 55mph. Tent did great, we did use the guy-lines. We did have some trees on the side that also probably helped a bit. We had a friend who had the Kingdom tent (that I see mentioned in the reviews) and they actually had a pole snap from the winds (and they had guy-lines, but no trees at all). Also, the triangle windows did not leak after several hours of rain/snow - so we were pleased with that as well! (Saw in a comment some might be doubtful)
We love the extra space and that there are windows to see outside (seems most other 6p tents we looked at you’d have to open the vestibule to see outside). We liked the pockets (size and height). Could always use more pockets - or hook spots to hand things like our jackets, etc.
We did also purchase the REI Campwell Cots and Campwell Sleeping Pads. Car camping will forever be changed for us now!

6 person tent that fits 6 people!
Overall right out of the bag the first time took about 10 minutes to set up with two people including time to look at directions and figure out how it is set up. Subsequent times that it was set up only took about five minutes, much easier with two people. Due to its height shorter people may struggle to get the top cross pole in. Being a 6 person was initially concerned that it would not actually fit 6 people. We used it with 2 adults, 2 teenagers and 2 kids, we had room to sleep and have some gear as well. Do not plan on doing anything but car camping with this, it is 28 lbs.
Pros
– Very thick and sturdy bottom layer, would feel comfortable using it in most situations without a footprint.
- Love the height and design of the tent I am 6’1” and can easily stand I the tent and not just in the middle but from end to end.
- Fits on a 10x10 camping platform/space which was found at the campgrounds we commonly use.
- The stuff sack is big enough to get the tent back in easily and has a nice shoulder strap
- The poles are color coded with the clips which makes it easy to match up with where they go while setting up the tent.
- The central windows on the walls without doors were great in order to get airflow.
Cons
– The central divider does not really make two rooms, there ends up being gaps on the top bottom and sides, and could be a little bit thicker it truly wanting to use it as a privacy screen. Do like that it zips in the middle though
- In order to use the divider and sleep 6 people two sleeping pads would have to be a short (5’) on either side of the divider, only way to use 6 full size mats would be without the divider.
- Wish the rain fly was full coverage (All the way to the ground on all sides. The multiple times I have used it has not been super rainy conditions, but worry that there might be issues if there was heavy rain for long periods of time.
Overall, very happy with this tent and it will be my workhorse tent for my family when car camping.

Storm Tested
I had just spent the morning hammering in all the Wonderland 6 tent stakes, and I had just prepared a Mountain House Chili-Mac on the camp stove when a storm with tornado warnings rolled through the camp ground. We only had moments to seek shelter in the mud-room before the storm hit. The storm was short but severe, it knocked down several trees in the campground. Then the wind llifted up my Easy-Up Tent protecting the our picnic table and smashed it broadside into our Wonderland 6. The Easy Up Tent was completely mangled but the Wonderland 6 took that blow like a champ. Then came the sideways rain that flooded our site in almost two inches of water in mere moments. We had to abandon the mud room for the tent because the entire area was now flooded, save for inside the Wonderland 6. The rainfly completely held out the wind and and sideways rain which hit our tent broadside. I remember peaking out the side windows to check on the storm, the ventilation windows did not leak. Once the brunt of the storm had past, I reached into the mud room and grabbed our forgotten Mountain House meal off the table and we ate our lunch as the last of the wind and rain buffeted our tent. In less that 10 minutes wonderland 6 survived a Storm with Tornado warnings, took a direct hit from a EasyUp tent, and staved-off a flood. I believe 5 stars are in order.

Bring back Kingdom
I am giving this only 1 star for the benefit of humanity, it deserves maybe 3. It is a very good tent but because we know Kingdom tents existed..can exist again with some design modifications, why settle for this ? I got it on sale, essentially for half the price. I dont think I would pay full price for it. I am hoping it is discontinued soon and Kingdom is brought back with slight design adjustments and popping colors. Yes, no pockets closer to the ground, yes the little triangle on the sides middle of the tent will probably let rain in, although it is useful for looking outside, yes the rainfly is stupid when it barely covers the full tent, and yes…the garage extension should be higher all the way to the end. Kind of difficult to put it together by yourself, although doable. Some poles feel like they do not want to bend the way they are needed to put the tent together and many a times i wondered if I was putting too much pressure where they might bend permanently. So far they have not, guess we will see. Quality of everything is great as you would expect from REI. Customer service excellent as always. Sales to die for. Hopefully REI listens to their customers’ feedback and either brings back the Kingdom tent of updates this one with the features we all loved in that tent , doesnt matter what they decide to call it.

Big and handsome!
The very first thing I noticed about this tent while putting it together was not only how easy it was to put up but just how nice the poles are, very nicely machined and strong! I’ve owned many tents and these are the nicest aluminum poles I’ve encountered. The stakes are strong too I’m guessing around 8mm in diameter they can take a beating without bending. The tent is big and the material is strong, there’s enough room to put 2 queen sized beds inside and with 4 kids + 2 adults the extra room was appreciated,The divider comes in handy for the lady’s when they needed their privacy. Had no condensation issues or problems with the wind. This is my new go to car camping tent and I can’t wait for our next camping trip.

Remind me never to buy REI brand gear again
1 year ago
After just over one year and on it's third use a pole snapped while setting up the tent. I took it to REI and they said they'd dropped their warranty to only a year and wouldn't cover it. I can understand why they dropped the return policy of anything for any reason - people were abusing it, but this was a legitimate warranty problem. Poles should not snap on their third use. Guess that tells you how much they believe in their own products.

Good tent
I picked this tent up (along with the footprint and Mud Room) on a sale and got to try it out recently. First off this tent is comically large, especially with the vestibule attached. If you want lots of space then you'll love the size of this tent, but you'll definitely need to find a large-ish flat spot which can sometimes be a challenge. The nearly vertical walls makes for a roomy interior and if you're under 6'3" or so you should be able to stand up anywhere inside. The entire top half of the tent is mesh which provides fantastic ventilation, even with the fly on. I was able to stay cool on a warm summer overnight by unzipping the privacy shades on both doors, as well as unzipping the shades on the two triangular side. windows. There are a few shortcomings with this tent, though. The rain fly doesn't cover the triangular windows, and some water was able to penetrate the mesh. If it's really coming down sideways, you'll likely get very wet by the windows. I also experienced an issue with the floor getting damp/wet after a moderate rainy night which didn't seem to happen to anybody else's tent in my group. Overall I like the tent a lot and feel like it's a great value for what I paid for, but probably would have felt like I overspent if I had bought full price.

Worst tent I have ever owned
This tent had no ability to stand up to wind. We had some wind camping in the desert and multiple poles snapped and the tent collapsed, this is with it properly staked and guy-lined down mind you. This was on our 5th or 6th use of the tent. I've been camping for most of my life and have camped many times in heavier winds with tents that survived just fine.
REI then refused to accept a return for "damage", even though their product is flawed. At the time of writing this review it has 22% 1 star reviews and most mention snapped poles, many even during setup. We haven't even had this tent a year and they won't accept a return or cover it under warranty. So much for the "100% satisfaction guarantee", the tent is literally still within the "I don't like it" return window, but because it completely failed us and is damaged, REI won't take it back.
My experience with this horrible tent and REI telling me to pound sand is the type of thing that will turn me from a lifetime REI customer to someone who won't be shopping at REI again.

Disappointed. Tent pole hub broke after only one
10 months ago
I purchased a Wonderland 6 from the outlet dept. I only used it one time. The pol hub broke after only one use!!!! I called the 1800 #. They told me that I am unable to return. I am very disappointed since I have another REI tent that I have used for almost 20years. I expected better quality and reliability considering it was an REI brand. I would stay way from this specific tent.
