Great roomy tent for 2 people and a pup. Easy set up, i I also bought the Kelty footprint and it fit perfectly. I was able to fold the fly back using the poles and string to give breeze inside the tent. It’s also pretty sturdy without tying the strings down and just using tent poles even with windy conditions. I could stand in it and the storage bag is small enough to pack away in a car for walk in or back in site camping, and light enough for a quick hike to the camp site
Quality control needs to improve. When we initially purchased this tent, there were several large runs in the mesh and a few holes at several seams. We exchanged for a new one, and I could not find any issues the second time around. This tent is a great size, wall-to-wall and floor-to-ceiling (I'm 5'8" and could stand straight in the middle of it). The rainfly and taped seams kept us dry through two mild rainstorms. It was warm inside the tent in 70-degree weather, but the ventilation kept condensation down. This has been a decent entry-level tent, but better quality control would have saved us time, energy, and money. I don't expect this to be a forever tent, but it's been nice to have something as we venture back to the outdoors again. If you're looking for something that'll keep you dry, is roomy enough for your crew, and will get you back out there as you work towards a higher-quality tent, this tent is for you!
Bought this for my daughter who needed a tent for a couple upcoming camping trips. She loves the tent! She loves to camp and hike so I spent more money to get her something that was a little better quality but also wouldn't break the bank. I know there are way more expensive tents out there but this also wasn't cheap in my mind. They had 6 girls in it one night and it was definitely tight. She thought it was more of a 4 person tent but that's kind of what we were expecting and seems to be the 'norm'. 6 person tent comfortably holds 4 with gear. Not disappointed in the size at all. They also got rained on and it stayed dry so that was good! On her third time setting the tent up, one of the poles split down the middle during setup. (They're some type of wood material.) She was able to duct tape it and continue her trip but really disappointing as I thought I was getting something a little tougher. I contacted Kelty and they asked for pics. Sent them pics and they said I would need to send the poles back and they could repair it. The biggest downside is that I had to pay the return shipping which was $20. They repaired the pole and and shipped it back very quickly (I had it back within a week of when I shipped it!) but still disappointed that it broke so quickly and that I had to pay for the shipping on something that was only a few months old. She has another big trip coming up this summer so fingers crossed we don't have another issue.
The poles are not great since they are made of fiberglass. With a strong wind they broke, completely shredding the rain fly and ripping through the seams. . Set up was pretty easy and the space was amazing, my 6ft 2 inch husband could even stand up fully.
This is by far the easiest tent I have ever set up. It was a dream. What wasn't a dream is freezing because 3/4 of the tent is only mesh; let's all the cold air in and all the heat out. The rain fly, which covered the mesh area (but didn't keep the heat in), worked great in the rain. There were no leaks and the rain just beaded on the rain fly. The other problem I had with the tent is the zipper catches continuously on the fabric around the zipper. The design of the zipper and fabric looked like it wouldn't have that problem but I couldn't zip up the tent from the outside more than a foot because the zipper got caught in the fabric. This tent has so much potential but because of the zipper and the mesh, I'm returning the tent.
It’s your basic dome tent, nothing fancy but perfect for the quick weekend camp trip when you don’t want to take anything too cumbersome. I have a duck canvas tent that I use for longer trips with more inclement weather but I needed a tent last minute for Crystal Cove in Orange County, the state park does not allow you to stake your tent since it is a protected nature preserve on a bluff etc etc. This was perfect. My husband and two kids (age 4/2) camped with a queen mattress and XL cot. we fit fine. I can understand how this tent would not suffice in cooler temps . The lowest it got was in the 60’s at night and the tent was warm to me. We were on the coast and none of the normal mist/ condensation that was surrounding us at night ended up in the tent, that was a plus. Set up was quick, straightforward. I am 5’2” and had no issue. Considering my 4 year old was slamming into the sides of the tent WWE style any opportunity he had, the tent held (despite not being staked). packing it up was also simple, the carrying case it came in was large enough that you didn’t need to fold tent back up in a complicated way to get it to fit back in the bag, which I appreciated.
Just back from rain in the Tetons and the first setup of the tent. Large footprint and built like an oversized 2 man tent. Rain fly: needs intermediate attachments to pull bottom away from the inner tent, door overhang design inadequate and the rain runs off and down the tent door (or into the tent if open). Tent: Roomy, stakes inadequate so buy yourself some good ones, lower outside seam cupped the wrong direction and collects dirt and water, really needs two to set up and take down. Have a towel for stepping on inside (and a mat for outside).
I'm so happy with this tent! I am new to camping, and this was my first experience with tents. I did a lot of research, and I am happy with my Kelty Discovery Basecamp 6p. It was so easy to set up all by myself, as a 5'2 smaller female! Practicing it once at home definitely gave me confidence driving to the campsite where it set up smoothly! The material is durable from what I experienced. It is very spacious for my full sized air mattress, another person, and my 80 lb dog. It definitely could fit 1-2 more people comfortably in there. It was in the 60s at night but I was pretty warm and slept without a blanket most of the time. It also seems to stay dry inside. We camped by the ocean so there was lots of condensation outside on the camping furniture the morning upon waking. I was very surprised when walking out since the inside of the tent stayed dry while everything on the table outside was pretty wet. Because it is around 13-14 lbs, I use this for car camping. If I do take this for backpacking, I would definitely distribute the weight amongst 3-4 people. I'm super happy with my purchase!
Pretty bummed with our experience of this tent. Purchased it as a last minute tent before we went camping for the weekend. Unfortunately as we set the tent up, one of the poles (or rather the metal pole sleeves) split and made the tent unusable. The poles on this tent are thicc, boy. Unlike any I’ve seen before and they oddly don’t inspire confidence. They also shed fiberglass like crazy - my wife has a ton in her hand from just setting the tent up. I can’t recommend this tent, and after reading other reviews (which we should’ve done before we bought it) it appears the poles are the weak point and a common complaint.
Used to camp in Mammoth 3 weeks ago for several days. Easy to setup and comfortable. We put in a queen air mattress and a double to see if they would fit before we left and they did. However, not much room for anything else afterwards. We just used the queen size on the campout. The only annoyance was that you need to lift the piece of fabric that protects the zipper from rain at the bottom of the door or the zipper wants to snag on it. You can also pull it in a certain direction to avoid that. It did not rain on us, but the tent appears to be well made and should last us for years to come.
