Great on the back, well balanced, well designed

I took the Osprey Women's Eja 58 pack on an 8-day backpacking trip to the Grand Canyon where I carried around 35lbs of weight. Because of the lumbar length adjustment, the backpack fit my petite (5'2") frame perfectly and distributed the weight so that I never felt any pain or fatigue in my shoulders or back. The mesh back kept me from getting too hot and sweaty on my back. I loved the two pockets on the waist straps, and I figured out how to squeeze in my switchback sleeping pad. The large pocket in the back and the two on the sides were handy for carrying water and various things. I wish the pack came with instructions on all of the ways the various components could be used, as I know the top can be removed but I don't know if it could serve as a day pack. The size was perfect for what I needed, the ergonomic fitting made it possible for me to carry the weight over precarious footing with ease. The only negative is that one of the rubber fasteners shredded without being used that much, but compared to how wonderful the pack is, this is a minor issue.

Extremely uncomfortable and ill designed pack

I have been searching for a comfortable pack that can carry about 25-35 pounds of gear, and I like it in the pack and not hanging on the outsides too much as it rains a lot where I live (hence a 50-60L pack). This pack fit the bill: large volume, lite weight and adjustable. First issue: it is light weight because it is skimpy foam on the shoulders and waist belt- so the pack just digs in- it was awful. If you have a 55L pack you can expect to need some padding to make the load comfortable. No, Osprey wasted the weight with some odd frame that keeps the pack away from your back so you don't sweat. Well, you sweat anyway when backpacking, and the load is so far away from your body it pulls you backwards at all times (strike #2) on little thin padded shoulders straps, which are so thin and so short. The pack is adjustable- you slip buckles into the odd back frame to adjust the pack size- only the buckles don't stay in as you walk and climb over and under things (Issue 3)- so it comes undone a lot, which can be dangerous when your whole pack shifts to one side! Issue 4- they also save weight with little tiny straps- the load lifters, the straps that go around the sides to snug the load down- they used straps like you see on a 18L day pack- so the weight of the load made them slide open constantly. The entire three day trip was a nightmare if my pack pulling me backward, killing my shoulders and pits with the baby shoulder straps and praying it would not come apart on the same side as the ledges I was traversing. I feel like they were trying to imitate a certain arc backpack frame but they missed it completely! Pushing the load so far back throws your whole game off. First hike I could not wait to get home so I could get this thing off of me.

Love this Pack

I have an older version that I got from the REI outlet but I LOVE this pack and will sing it’s praises every chance I get. I’ve hiked the majority of the Arizona Trail with it and I’ve never gotten shoulder, neck or back pain. The hip strap is on tight! It fits everything I need and I have the brain off completely for less weight. No back sweat either! I’m 5’6” with a long torso and lean frame and I feel like it was literally designed for my body. So grateful to Osprey for making this pack. It has a little wear and tear but I’ve put so many miles on it over the span of two years I cannot complain. I wish mine had hip pockets but I just use a Fanny pack instead which is great.

I’ve been hiking the PCT

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I’ve been hiking the PCT and my shoulders has been hurting for about the last 1500miles with a similar bag made by a different company but when I got the Eja my shoulder pain went away instantly. Wish I had gotten it sooner!!! I really notice the quality with this bag, and looking forward to many more miles hiked with it!

My Favorite Pack- I Suggest trying it with Weight inside

I love this pack!!!! I read the reviews and I felt that I have to leave mine as well. Here is the reality, you need to try the pack inside the store with 15-20 lbs of weight and walk around with it for about a hour to really get an idea if the pack fits you without hurting you (but then you really find out the truth after your first trip). The highlights of my review: -Each pack has adjustable torso length :+1: -Pack is lightweight and awesome! :+1: -I only wish that there was a 65 L version so I could bring all the things I want on a trip -I bought the 38 L for day trips and 58 L version for backpacking -Shoulder straps fit me almost perfect, the width if the straps are perfect, I could use a little more under cushion because I am skinny. Everyone's shoulders and chest dimensions are different! That is why the reviews differ. It is not the packs fault. It's different body compositions. My body is thin and the straps on the shoulders and the waist cushioned straps are almost perfect. I could handle slightly more cushion for longer hikes. I am skinny! Osprey Aura straps hurt my shoulders, EJA does not on short hikes. The EJA model allows for an adjustable torso length. That means that it can be custom fit to your back. It makes a huge difference. Also, the shoulder straps on all Ospreys as well as other brands differ widely. This is fortunate because one Osprey pack may hurt your shoulders due to it NOT being the right strap for you, while another bag might fit perfectly. The Aura straps dig deeply into my shoulders. The Eja does not!!! The only way to try on a pack is inside the store with 15-20 lbs inside of it. Then try it on the trail. It will tell you if you have the right pack. After trying 3 packs, this one is very close to my dream pack!!! I just wish there was a Larger 65 Liter one so I had more space! I bought the 38 Liter one for day hikes and the 58 Liter one for backpacking.

Comfortable and practical!

I adore this pack. It's so comfortable, and the mesh on the back is a huuuuuuge factor in that. It hugs my back and distributes the weight perfectly, while also letting some breeze hit my back and keeping me cool. I also love that my water reservoir doesn't sit right on my back, so my water stays cooler. The pack has so much space and plenty of great little features - I have a feeling I'm still going to be discovering new and useful things about it years down the line. I love the removable pack brain, so I can store my essentials in there and only bring that into my tent with me at night - very handy. Highly recommend.

Light and super comfortable

Love this pack. I needed a lighter-weight pack than my super comfortable Osprey Aura 65 and this fits the bill--lighter by nearly 2 lbs. Still as comfortable but without some of the extra compartments, it seems to work fine for a 3-4 day. Still getting used to one entry (top), but I'm adapting. The adjustable fit is easy to change. Unlike other lightweight packs, Osprey keeps the frame and it makes all the difference--it keeps bumpy gear off my bony back and allows air flow.

Not the best for wider shoulders + straight hips

I am 5'4 + 135lbs with wider shoulders and not-so-curvy hips, and had alot of issues with shoulder pain and slippage. I think it might fit a curvier or more petite person much better! Shoulder pain was present even after countless adjustments, largely because it kept slipping down my hips. Additionally I think the shoulder straps were a bit narrow for me, since the soreness was mainly in my inner shoulder/neck area. Test hike was an overnight with 23 miles and 5k vert. I wanted so badly for this to be the one - the mesh back panel was dreamy, loved the organization, and side-loading water bottle holders save lives. Bummer!

Comfortable and light, great backpack

I bought this pack to replace a well-worn Osprey Viva 65L pack from 2015 and took it out on a 60 mile loop in the High Sierra. I saved 13 ounces over the old back but it felt like it was 2 lbs lighter (to the point that I was sure I forgot to pack something). Even with 30 pounds of gear, food and water, it felt great. Once I had it on I never had to adjust the hip belt or shoulder straps as I have in the past to redistribute the load. It was beyond my expectations for comfort. I am looking forward to using this for long distance hikes next year and beyond.

Perfect pack for multi-day light backpacking!

I haven't been on a multi-day backpack trip in a decade and was worried about being able to carry the weight. This pack is not only very light for the size, but it is so well designed and made that I was able to do 8-13 miles a day with minimal discomfort and that didn't start until day three. I'm short but fairly long in the torso, but the longest setting on the straps fit me perfectly. The back pouch was handy for bigger stuff, and the smaller pockets on the waistband held everything I needed nearby. This is my second osprey pack and I have been incredibly pleased with both.
