Not a great fit unless you’re slim.
Very very comfortable lightweight and breathable. If only it fit my arms, the seams digs very deep into my arms. I’m 5’9 190lbs with 18 inch arms, 31 inch waist and got a size large, if I go any bigger it’ll be a dress on me. I’ve heard this being very tight fitting but I’ve seen chubbier individuals wearing it and I assume larger people wear hoodies. That being said I’m not going on a rant about body inclusivity I’m just very muscular and the arms fit like spandex. If you’re either obese or a bodybuilder stay away. This is a skinny persons hoodie
New go-to active mid-layer
Highly breathable, super sweat wicking, lightweight, warm, and soft/comfortable. Particularly like the fit of th neck and hood zipped all the way up which leaves enough room for a buff unlike other fitted Mid-layer zip ups. Do wish there were some shock cord adjustments around the waist for when it's under a shell and you're trying to keep the cold out.
Versatile but had to size up.
I bought this for a trip to Costa Rica as light insulation for our time in the mountains. It worked great in the high 60s at night with a light breeze. Now I’m home and I just backcountry skied with it as my only layer over my capilene base layer. It snowed and the only places that wetted through was where I sweated under the backpack and its straps. Not cold when I took of my pack though. Dried wearing it in the car in about 20 minutes. Overall versatile and doesn’t take up much room in my pack. BUT. I had to buy a XXL at 6’2” and 210 lbs. The XL was short and tight and the XXL is a very casual fit. I like it but you might be in between sizes like me.
Warm and lightweight
The Patagonia R1 Air Full-Zip is an exceptional mid-layer that strikes the perfect balance between warmth and breathability. The unique grid fleece design not only provides excellent insulation but also ensures moisture wicks away quickly, making it ideal for high-output activities in cooler weather. The fit is comfortable and allows for easy layering, I’m 5’10, 145 lbs and size medium fits me well. As expected from Patagonia, the build quality is outstanding, and the use of recycled materials is a big plus for sustainability-minded buyers. Whether you’re hiking, climbing, or just running errands on a chilly day.
Best mid layer in the game
I own 2 of the R1 quarter zips and those are wonderful, but wanted some additional ventilation. This hoodie works great for alpine ascents as a mid layer. Since its a full zip it's easy to take on and off. It's extremely warm, but also has great breathability. I've now hung up my R1 quarter zips and use this. I've been able to wear this down to 20-30 degrees while moving (I do run a bit hot though). If you're just standing around it probably will hold just fine down to about 50 maybe 40 degrees F. Material is comfortable and doesn't have the weird armpit fitting issue that some of the other R1s have.
Excellent fleece for layering
Perfect light insulation layer for high output activities. Many reviews say these run small, but I disagree. My guess is people buying it as a street coat say that, but this is a technical fleece and should be slim fitting to layer well. Sleeves and body length sufficiently long. My only suggestion for improvement would be adding thumb holes. 6'- 160 lbs. I generally wear a medium in most brands and this fits well in medium. I first upsized to a large based on reviews and it was too loose around the torso to layer well. If I were wearing this to work every day then I would probably go with a large.
great until I washed it
I really liked this jacket until I washed it and it shrunk unevenly around the zipper, causing a permanent “pooch” in the stomach area. Also, it started to pull on the sleeves after only a few months. With how expensive it is, I didn’t feel like that should be happening. I ended up returning this and bought the Patagonia snap sweater which I’ve liked a lot. I had really liked the warmth to weight ratio of this jacket, which was very warm but very light.
Nice, but doesn’t fit right
I really wanted to like this R1 and bought it for my early fall backpacking trips. Unfortunately, the fit isn’t right. I ordered a medium and large to compare. The medium fit perfectly in the body length and arms, but was very tight across the chest and shoulders. The large provided the extra room through the chest and shoulders, but was way too long in the body and arms. I have several other Patagonia jackets in medium and they fit fine. If the medium is the “mid-layer” fit they are after, anyone with an athletic build beware. What’s more, fleece isn’t as compressible as down or other “air” jackets. On that alone, I was likely to return this jacket. Wasn’t what I hoped. For reference, I’m 52, 6’ and 185. I work out regularly. I wear a size 42 suit jacket and have it slightly fit through the mid-section.
You're not gonna want to take it off!
Super impressed with this. It's the first thing I grab to wear over a t-shirt on a daily basis. Soft and comfortable enough to wear without a tee too. I'm 6'2" and 200 pounds. The size L fits well (maybe a TINY bit short in the sleeves, but that's if I'm being picky). Pretty breathable, so probably will want a shell over it if the temp drops below about 40. Comfortable and practical as a mid layer for hiking. Well fitting hood. Hopeful that it will be a quality mid layer for resort skiing as well.
My most versatile fleece
A very versatile fleece. I travel a lot for work but most fleece are too bulky like my ancient Patagonia Snap-T or Fjallraven Vardag to pack and can cause me to overheat in cooler indoor environments like a plane. This one is packable, light, breathable and practical (full zip, zip outer pockets, large inner drop pockets) with a good temp range. And a nice feel on the skin like on a red-eye flight when I sleep in it with the hood up On the weekends, when I am cycling, hiking or dragging my sled, I can wear it under a windbreaker with the hood up and be completely comfortable exercising in the cool windy late fall weather. I can’t say enough good things about it. Will it last 33 years like my Snap-T? Maybe not. But if it gives me 5-8 years of heavy use, I will be satisfied. FYI: I am 160lb, 5’11” and the Medium gives me a close but not tight fit with room enough for a base layer or thin sweatshirt.
