Worst fears came true with the tires and issues.
Worst fears came true with the tires and some other issues. I wanted to edit my previous review but it wouldn't let me. Overall I wouldn't buy this bike again for a few main issues. First off the Vee Branded tires are garbage. I've been using this bike for about 3 months on and off to commute and the tires are dry rotted/cracked/and have the cords showing. The tires were never over inflated, I noticed this when I took it out for spin today and am shocked/disappointed. Nest issue when I was inspecting the bike with how the cables are routed the shifter cable tube is half way cut by a sharp edge on the frame. I moved it but this needs to be addressed. Also the brakes...the original brakes started to squeal/grind after a few weeks, I changed to a different tektro pad(different material) and that fixed the issue. I get this isn't a high end bike but after 3 months of use it shouldn't have these problems. The bike has around 250 miles on it. I called REI and they said to bring it in, which I will do but it's a hassle and shouldn't need to be done in such a short amount of time.
More pros than cons
I’m 4’11” and returned 3 bikes to various places before deciding that Co-op Cycles XS is a good size frame for me. I really loved this bike because she was easy to operate. While going uphill, I “shifted gears while pedaling too hard” which caused the gears to crunnnnnch and the gear bent, which shredded the paint and side of the frame, and stopped moving altogether while I was pedaling, which bruised up my leg. Allegedly that was weird and very rare so just be careful to downshift before you get to the hill. In flat roads she’s very comfortable but on rail trails, especially in hilly areas, I was feeling every bump. So I returned her hoping to buy the 2.1 model, which is currently out of stock 😢
Great Value for an Everyday Commuter & Trail Bike
My wife needed a new bike and, since I had recently bought the non-step through version (and love it), we went with this one for her. Again, the bike is built solidly and it's impossible to find another bike of this quality at this price point. My only complaint (and the reason for just four stars) with this model is that, due to the sharp angles of the frame, you're limited to the accessories that will fit the attachment points between the down tube and the "top" tube.
Overall a good bike, not sure about Tektro Brakes
Overall this is a solid bike. It's a decent quality bike for commuting and if/when it gets stolen at $600 it's not going to be heartbreaking. The frame quality/welds/overall component selections are pretty decent especially at this price point. At first I wasn't sure what to make of the Vee branded tires but after 6 weeks of ownership and about 100 miles they have proven to be ok. The only issues I've had is with the Tektro brakes and I'm not sure if it's my fault or not. About a week after purchase they started to squeal/grind really bad. I tried to clean the rotors with 70% IPA medical wipes and that didn't make a difference so I took the bike back to REI since it needed the detailers adjusted. The bike shop at REI was great, friendly, and helpful. They said the pads were contaminated so that is not covered under warranty, maybe I did it with the IPA tips but...I don't think so...my point is the brakes work fine but the squeal/grind so bad I will replace the pads/rotors but I"m wondering if it's a Tektro issue. I also have a Specialized w/ Promax Brakes that is taken on the same streets and these have zero issues. I remember I had a Cannondale Quick CX w/ Tektro brakes and those also squealed really bad...so this is just something to keep in mind. Only other issue is the frame design on the rear tire fender mount. The mounting hole is 90 degrees from how I've seen quite a few bikes and the Bontrager NCS fenders I bought from REI don't exactly fit right. I need to drill a hole in the fender to screw it into the frame and shim it with washers. Not a huge deal but the factory Bontrager mount does not work. I like the metal pedals, I prefer metal over plastic. This bike was purchased to commute, it's going to get beaten up, scratched, dented, etc and being $600 I don't mind. It's also a bike I trust not to break and lead to injury.
Worst bike we ever bought
Bought this bike for a teenager in March of 2022 - it is in constant need of repairs. I have four children, none of the other bikes need this kind of constant attention. The bike is stored in a shed - we have replaced the derailler twice now and it needed repairs on the tire and on the brakes. For a bike that has only been on the road for maybe 150 miles - this is just ridiculous
Novice cyclist
I'm 35 years old and always love to ride a bicycle but unfortunately I could never learn, but now with my new bike, in one week I have learned how to ride. My bike is so lightweight and I love it."
Solid choice
Good, basic choice for a hybrid at this price point. Nothing too fancy, but quite functional.
Good bang for the buck
This is a decent bike. Little heavy, but that makes it durable. It’s got the right sized tires for just about anything, kickstand, and Shimano drivetrain! All in all this is a slam dunk. At a time where bikes are getting crazy expensive, even at the starter level, this is a solid choice.
Great bike for me!
Great bike! Bought it Memorial Day but the weather didn’t permit riding all week. Just rode it the first time today after many years of not riding any bike. We did a little more than 16 miles on the Comet Trail. I am happy with my purchase and the staff at REI were the BEST!
