I chose this hoodie for my PCT thru hike. I wore it every day as my only shirt. It lasted me 132 days in a row or constant daily sun, carrying a 30 lb pack, and infrequent washing. Can’t say enough good things about this. Kept me very cool never got sunburned, doesn’t smell at all even after 7 days of use and no washing. Definitely recommend this bad boy. Eventually holes wore through where my hip belts rub on it all day. And it took 5 months of abuse to develop a few holes. This things a beast

I was excited about this hoody. I own a lot of Kuhl clothing and love all of it. The idea of a highly breathable hoodie to protect me from the sun on hot desert like conditions was appealing. Unfortunately, unlike any other article of Kuhl clothing that I own, the sleeves on this hoodie were short. A solid 1.5 inches short in fact. It looks ridiculous. To add injury to insult, Kuhl put thumbhole slits on the sleeves

Decent Sun Protection

It was a nice hoodie and kept me cool during a small section hike of the AT through the Roan -Highlands (Carver's Gap to 19E). The weather was mostly clear, lots of sun exposure, and temperatures in the range of 15-18°C. Sleeves were easy to push up for extra cooling when not in direct sun light. The fit of the garment was spot on for me having a longish torso for my height and wasn't too tight in the upper back and chest area. I recommend this product to anyone looking for decent sun protection. I wish I would have ordered it online so I could have gotten a lighter color. My store only had the dark olive green in my size.

A Versatile Sport Shirt

I have been spending long days on the trail (in the sun) and I thought these shirts made a lot of sense. I noted a lot of backpackers wearing them so looked over the reviews, then stopped at REI finding the color and size, medium, were in stock. That afternoon was in Fruita, Colorado on a hot late afternoon. Did a 2.5 mile trail run to see just how comfortable I would be in the blazing sun. The shirt seemed to breathe nicely with any slight breeze. The hood paired with a coolmax hat with a brim was great to shade my face and ears. A cooling effect in the sun. SPF is good at 20-30. With my coolmax hat increases that. Hiking in colder temps in rain and snow I used it as a baselayer with a thin fleece and a shell over it. Wicked moisture really well and wore the same clothes all day. Have not sensed any odors. Rinsed in the shower and dried overnight. I own two pairs of Kuhl pants that are excellent and now I find their shirt is one you may want to wear every day

Great light layer with very functional hood

I have worn several brands of baselayer over the years, in the mountains as warmth, in the desert as sun protection and everywhere in between. I tend to regulate temp fairly well and usually only need a layer to keep off the wind and sun but often end up either too warm or hampered by an uncomfortable fit. Not the case with this shirt. My torso is on the long side and I have just had to get used to constantly pulling my shirt back under my harness or waist-belt when I'm backpacking, but the week I've spent in this shirt has me imagining a better future for my adventures. I put it on and left it on for 3 days as the wind came and went and the temps swung from the mid 30's to the upper 60's. It fits well under a narrow cut puffy and isn't so tight that you can't wear a t-shirt under it, which I choose to do most days. I have to say I haven't had such a multipurpose piece of clothing for my upper body before. In the early morning I could pull the hood up and shake off the chill while belaying and then immediately drop the hood and pull the sleeves up for a cool climb. The hood is almost unnoticeable despite being the first hooded shirt I've worn. It fits well under a helmet or over a hat and even for my very above average head size, never cut into my chin or neck. The fabric seems to wick moisture quite well, as I never noticed the feeling of being sweaty or having a damp back, even after a long approach and hanging for hours in the sun in a harness. It sits just a little loose and has a similar weight to the REI lightweight or the Patagonia Capilene Cool lightweight knits, both of which are my usual go-to for early spring/late fall outings. I must mention if you have larger forearms, hiking up the sleeves is a bit of a chore as the sleeve openings are a touch thin where the thumbholes are. I did try to use the thumbholes while hiking and sitting around in the cooler temps, but found the sleeves to be a touch short for me to do that comfortably; perhaps my arms are a bit long. I don't normally use thumbholes though, so it's not a loss for me. Overall I am extremely impressed with this shirt and am happy to add it to my 'go-to pile' when I might need some extra wind or sun protection with my baselayer. My girlfriend also loves the color on me, so I have that going for me. Which is nice.

I bought 3!

These things are amazing. They have a fitted fit to them and make me feel stylish to wear as an everyday shirt, but don’t be mistaken, it’s not called ‘engineered’ for nothing. These hoodies have some serious tech built into them. I live in Texas where temps get into the triple digits and these things have a way of allowing air into them while protecting you from the hot sun, keeping you cool. They’re just amazing and I get excited anytime I have an excuse to wear it. I’ve never gotten sunburned while wearing one of these things and I’ve done some serious hiking in them. I loved them so much, I own three of them in various colors.

Perfect Fit

Last year I purchased a Columbia sun hoody on sale. I bought the Kuhl Engineered hoody to replace that product. I should have just spent the extra money and bought this one in the first place. I'm 6' 2" 185 with a slim-muscular build, and the L fits me perfect. I read a couple reviews claiming that the arms on their product were too short, I didn't have that issue. I like that this hoody doesn't feel like you're wearing a plastic bag like the Columbia version. It's also nice that they use a higher UPF rated material on the hood, shoulders, and arms while using a more breathable material in the body. Also, the hood fits well on me as intended.

Poor fit, awkward hood

At 5'11" ~160 lbs, none of the sizes will be appropriate. Medium fits too short and too wide, so neither sizing up nor sizing down is an option since it runs both small and large depending on the direction. And then there's the weird hood. Since each side of the opening crosses from the opposite collarbone, it ends up "squeezing" your jaw on its way up. Not painful or anything, just annoying. And again, the fit of the hood is off, so it pulls up the entire shirt slightly; and there's excess fabric in the width which poofs out from the sides. Looks absolutely ridiculous.

Light weight, comfortable, quality

I’ve been wearing this hoody for the past two weeks and I was pleasantly surprised by the fit and feel. I’m 6-2, 210 lbs and received the XL size. For me, larges tend to shrink to the point of being too small, and Xl’s can be too baggy. However, the fit is great- similar to a t-shirt that has a bit of room for movement, but won’t shrink on me or stick when I’m working out or hiking. It’s light weight, breathable, and comfortable enough to sleep in and I actually did (forgetting that I had it on). I would recommend this shirt for those looking for high quality activewear that can be also worn for relaxation and comfort. Kuhl has been impressing me with the quality of their products.

Great for shorter people too!

This hoodie is not just for the mountains! It works great in hot humid sunny Florida also. It's very comfortable with excellent ventilation. The fit is not too long which is important in us shorter folks. The hoody is extremely useful and fits well with sunglasses and a hat. It also doesn't make you look dopey like some of the other hoodies. I do agree with one of the other reviewers that the sleeves are shorter than anticipated if you use the thumb holes. Nevertheless, it wasn't bad enough to prevent me from buying 2 more of these hoodies.
