I've had the same pants previously for 2-3 years and they always worked great in all kinds of weather (cloudy pacific northwest to warm temps in utah). The zipper on one of the legs went out on the previous pair, so I wanted to order the same pants, same size, again. Apparently they now come only with the 'bug barrier'. These were fine for multiple hikes in cool conditions, but when I took them on a backpack in Zion with hot weather they gave me a painful rash on my inner thighs that didn't heal for over 3 weeks. As I was month long road trip, I needed to borrow hiking pants from my husband for the next month. I can only assume the rash was caused from whatever insecticide was used to impregnate. Disappointed in the pants and wishing there was a version that wasn't toxic.
This is my first pair of Royal Robbins pants, as well as a bug barrier garment. I had to shorten the pants and was therefore able to see the construction details. I am impressed with their quality and the attention paid to the little things that make for a superior garment. The fit is terrific, they are a comfortable weight for hiking in the heat, and I walked through tick infested areas with no freeloaders to be found at the end of the day.
When I purchased these pants, I did not realize that there is a seam running down the front of the pants. If I knew this, I would never have purchased them. In past years, this item had no seams and I was so satisfied with them, I decided to get new ones to add to my wardrobe. Simply put, I found that both the fit and appearance was just not the same.
I am happy with these hiking pants. They are comfortable and fit well. I like the placement of the pockets and the convertible legs. I would have given them 5 stars if they had an interior belt and zippered legs to make it easier to convert between shorts and long pants while I have my boots on.
I have trouble finding pants that fit comfortably but aren’t baggy and these were a perfect fit, I am 5’ 7” and weigh 125 lbs. The only downside for me is I wish the shorts were a bit longer. I bought these for a trip to Botswana so I’m not sure yet on the bug repellent part.
