The Best Ever

A binding that truly can go anywhere and do anything. It skis on-piste and off-piste at the ski are like a normal alpine binding, but tours uphill and in the backcountry like a tech binding. It transforms every pair of skis you own into a backcountry set up instantly. I've trusted it on big drops and hard charging, use it for backcountry ski tours and it's my daily driver at the resort. It's a revolution in bindings and no other option out there even compares to the Shift.

Brake fell off 3 miles in

I bought this last year excited about its capabilities. I love Salomon as a company but the fact that my brake fell off 3 miles in and I had to hike back a mile to get it, I found it unacceptable for the binding. Not to mention this was only the second time I got to use them. I was considering getting another pair; however after this experience I won’t be buying another pair of shifts or even Salomon bindings. I love what they stand for, but I need a binding that performs and doesn’t brake. Luckily I was able to ski down still because of the shift mechanism but there was about 1 cm of vertical play in the heel piece without the brake. All the best to Salomon but I would choose the marker kingpin or alpinist

Awful touring, great skiing

Skip buying these bindings if you plan on touring for more than 15-30 minutes a session. They're awful in touring mode. Toe lever won't stay locked and default flops to open... no problem unless you want your ski to stay on your boot when you're going up hill. Brake won't consistently stay up in tour mode, so not only are you lugging heavy bindings up the hill, you're also dragging the brake. Flip side, these things fully ski like an alpine binding. The design is ingenious, but its embarrassingly unreliable in the field (sorry engineers!). Transitions require more work than most touring bindings, but they ski really well and are worth it for the down. Don't buy this binding if you want to go on proper ski tours. Do buy this binding if you are at a resort 98% of the time and want to exit a gate and hit a run and skin back. Salomon service didn't reply to an email asking for suggestions or tips with the issues. Will be returning to REI for something that is reliable.

Hot garbage!

These are rubbish. Just Google Salomon Shift Prerelease and you'll find dozens of Reddit and other forum posts about the issue. I am a solid intermediate skier, I don't do anything extreme. I find these are completely useless on anything but a pristine groomer with the snow we get in the PNW. I had a bunch of early releases and did all the suggested fixes like adjust AFD, forward pressure and cranking the DIN up. I also took them to the shop to have them tested and adjusted but nothing helped. Today, I lost a ski on my second run of the day thanks to these stupid bindings. I found the brake down slope but the ski is a goner. If you like gear that works, stay far away for these.

Decent when they're not broke.

After one year the screw that adjusts the DIN on the rear heel snapped it's washer. For bindings that cost $600 and are supposed to accept a DIN of 13 having a plastic washer that snaps so easily is a joke. Salomon customer service is warranting/replacing this has been horrible as well. It's been 4 weeks and they're just offering to review the binding.

3 years in and not one issue

Both my partner and I bought Salomon Shift bindings pre pandemic and neither of us have had any mechanical issues (minus figuring out having to lift the toe tab to lock into walk mode, but that was user error, and a small amount of condensation builds up in the toe DIN window which hasn't caused any issues yet). I'm hopeful the quality on recent stock is still good as I'm ordering another pair for my new skis (reading about the prerelease issues now concerns me). Averaging at least 40+ days a season with focus in glades, bumps, and hard charging groomers these babies haven't let me down. I love the options of the black or blue color (blue is my fav).

Next year...

I have had these for a full season and have used them everyday both touring and skiing snowbird here in Utah. These are hands down my favorite binding! I am a big mountain skier and have found these to be very trustworthy and secure when dropping big cliffs and skiing at high speed. My one complaint is the brakes... i haven’t found them to work well, especially in fresh snow. I have had my ski fly down the mountain more than once. In addition they do occasionally in gage when touring up if you bump your skis together :( next year if the brakes work a little better and stay up when touring.. they will officially be the best hybrid binding ever!! thanks :)

The Pinnacle of Ski Bindings

After skiing the Shift for multiple years, I am still constantly amazed by the engineering. A lot of people say it's "like" a tech binding uphill and "like" an alpine binding downhill. But really, it IS a tech binding for the uphill and it IS a full alpine binding for the downhill. There is no compromise on either side. I ski the Shift for big tours, at the ski area, and everything in between. When I go on a big trip, it's also great to be able to bring a pair of skis with just the Shift, knowing that I'm ready for whatever I get into.

Broken!

I bought these bindings for this year and skied them roughly 50 days (at resorts + backcountry). I didn't have any complaints and found these bindings awesome for sending it hard around the resort. However, today I was skinning up a ridge and when I brought my stepped forward the binding completely broke. I didn't hit it on anything, was literally just walking! I'm pretty upset because these bindings are new this year. I don't think it was the mounting job because I've been skiing these on this mount for the whole season.

Beware

I bought these in March 2021. Started using them winter 2022. Took them out this year, did some easier touring for 2 days. On the third day after being in ski mode, the toe piece would not secure my boot in touring/walk mode --it was like the tension had been lost. Had to use a ski strap to hold my toe somewhat in place (it slipped out many times and had to readjust) on a tour back to our starting spot. I have read other "poor" reviews and the toe piece binding seems to be a common trend among those.
