The most comfortable pad I've ever used
Rhymetime
I've gotten creakier as an older adult and needed something more comfortable to sleep on. Since getting a knee replacement, I've been unable to find a pad with enough cushioning to avoid knee pain when I was lying down in my tent. I've also sometimes woken up with a sore back. The MegaMat is far more comfortable than anything I've ever used. It's like bringing a twin bed into your tent--roomy, warm, and padded. Like a real bed. No more stuffing a pillow under my knee or waking up uncomfortable in the middle of the night. It's great to be be able to just toss the MegaMat in my tent with the Inflate valve open, wait 20 minutes, and only have to hand-pump it a few times to get it to the desired firmness. I found that unlike my previous air mattresses, it holds its firmness in my tent over multiple days despite changes in temperature from daytime to nighttime. A good design feature is having two separate valves for inflating and deflating. The MegaMat deflates easily to put in its stuff sack when traveling. Exped's video about deflation is helpful. Just open the Deflate valve, fold it in thirds, sit on it to get the air out, and then unfold it and roll it. Exped includes helpful directions for care. Make sure you follow the directions about the first inflation, keeping it fully inflated for 24 hours before use to make sure that the memory foam inflates all the way after that. I trust Exped knows what they're talking about when they say if you keep it stored in its stuffsack, it will require a lot more pumping to get to full inflation. That's comparable to other kinds of air mattresses. A couple things to note. First, once the pad self-inflates, should you want to add a little more air to make it more firm, it can be hard to get the hand pump to snap on to the valve because the inflated mattress has some give to it. It's doable, just requires some patience. Second, Exped advises that you store the mat inflated for best performance. Given its large size, this could be a challenge if you don't have a lot of space. Thanks to the MegaMat, I'm able to continue car-camping pain-free. It's worth every penny.

Bought two of these. Amazingly comfortable. Alas, after 15 months my mattress has blistered. Not sure what, if anything can be done about it.

Superb design

Compared to the Exped MegaMat 10, the Camp Dreamer has a firmer, more supportive foam core (about 25% denser on a lb/sq. ft. basis). When I tried these two mattresses side-by-side after adjusting each to my preferred air pressure, the Camp Dreamer was more comfortable for side-sleeping. While the MegaMat feels like a stretchy air mattress, the Camp Dreamer feels more like an actual memory foam mattress. If you are choosing a mattress based purely on comfort without concern for size, weight or packability then I would recommend the Camp Dreamer, otherwise the MegaMat balances all of these factors very nicely without compromising much in the way of comfort.

Excessive Comfort

My wife and I recently purchased the Exped for car camping and kayaking. However, they will be packed differently for kayaking trips. I found the Exped to be extremely comfortable, warm and quiet. It does require being rolled up twice to get all the air out. Not a big deal though. The hand pump is adequate despite some of the reviews I read. I got mine pumped up completely full in about three minutes. I also inflated it with an electric pump. The electric pump is obviously way easier. You will need much less air than full as the center slightly bulges up when inflated to firm. Lowering the air pressure actually made it a lot more comfortable. When you fold the mat in half lengthwise and roll it it fits perfectly into the Sea to Summit extra large dry compression bag. It's way more manageable that way. I would not call this a self-inflating mat. So don't buy it for that purpose. If you have a little extra money to spend and you really want a good night's sleep then this will work. I wish it was cheaper though. My wife just asked me to add into this review that if you put them side by side you will need a queen sheet to cover them both. Enjoy.

Best Car Camping Pad out there

I have tried many sleeping pads and this is my favorite. My 9 yr old son and I have done a bunch of camping these last few years with his Cub Scout Pack and we have tried inflatable pads, foam pads, bulky folding memory foam pads, etc. The MegaMat is our favorite. It fills up fast with a Schnozzel pump bag (extra purchase, but so worth it) with about 3-4 full bags worth of air. It is super comfy, warm and most importantly QUIET! There are no crinkly noises or plastic noises as you move around on it all night. We have 2 of the LW size (25 in wide) in a REI Half Dome 2+ tent and it fills the floor side to side with comfy pad. We are loving this pad.

Best sleep you’ll get in a tent!

Slept on it for the first time last weekend in Northern Arizona. The lows only reached low 50s. I slept with a very light sleeping bag and between that and the pad I was very toasty. I’m a stomach sleeper and like to bring my knee up which is why I ordered the XL. I had more then plenty of space. (Im only 5ft 3in) It deflates well to comfortably fit back in bag without force. It was certainly the most comfortable sleep iv had tent camping as an adult. My roommate purchased same pad and slept on it with a 40lb dog next to her and she’s 5ft 11. I highly recommend it.

Ridiculously comfortable

This thing is ridiculously comfortable. As comfortable as a nice bed. No, really. It's hard to communicate how nice this thing feels. It basically self inflates and the foam is so resilient, you can sleep on it without closes the seal (obviously not as firm than when inflated and sealed, but a leak shouldn't be a problem). It takes some work rolling it up, but with decent technique it's not too bad (Exped has a video showing you how). It doesn't pack small at all though. You could bring it backpacking but it would be a stretch. Mainly a car camping mattress, but if you ever sleep on one these it will be hard to go back to your ultra light Thermarest!

Excited to sleep on the ground

I got this pad to sleep on the ground in a shared motel room and also for car camping trips. I have ultralight pads for backpacking and they are great for the weight... but if you are looking for the most comfortable car camping mat EVER, this is it! It's way better than a motel bed and I've never been so excited to sleep on the ground before. The extra width means it's great for side sleepers. When you sit on it your bottom doesn't immediately hit the ground. The foot pump is easy to use and the precise inflation and deflation controls make packing / unpacking the pad super easy. If weight is not an issue get this pad immediately!

Very comfortable and high tech but...

This is a great portable sleeping pad . Well made, good looking and reliable yet...once the amount of air is adjusted perfectly for you, feels EXACTLY like my REI-brand "Camp Bed XL". And the latter cost much less. I believe its because the Expeds extra half inch thickness offers no more comfort AND that the sleeping surface of the REI camp Bed XL is an amazingly soft material. I am still stunned I cannot tell which I am sleeping on. Kudos to Exped for a wonderful product, its just that the REI Camp Bed XL is less costly. To be comfy, order either pad. On a budget...get the REI Camp Bed XL. Both are amazing and are like sleeping at home. No kidding!

Disappointed

First a little background. I car camp roughly 5 times a year. For most of that time I have used Intex air mattresses. They are not very comfortable, but it is better then being on the ground. Typically I get 3 to 5 years out of them, but inevitably they will spring a leak. This is not unexpected and I will suffer through a night of my butt on the ground and then goto the store to purchase another. I wanted something better, and in the Exped MegaMat I found something that is way more comfortable and I had hoped way more durable. And so I purchased two of them.I have had my mats 1 year and I beleive I have used them 3 to 5 times. In my 3 to 5 excursions since owning the mats I have had to replace one after the first trip, and now another one will only hold air around 4 hours. Air mattresses devolope leaks, I get that, I was even expecting these to develop leaks at some point. I thought however that for my $500 inventment I would be buying more then a year before the first leak. I've gotten as much as 3 to 5 years out of $50 intex beds. Here I am, the not so proud owner of a very expensive mat that I can't trust. I am going to fix it, but given how fragile these seem to be, I am alway going to wonder when my next night sleep will be ruined. I did find the leaks and they are disappointingly small, the left hole shoes zero signs of damage and the right shows the perhaps the slightest evedence of a pinhole. These mats have lived their life on a clean tent floor or in the storage bag. They look brand new even in the area of the holes. They have not been abused, or even used very hard. Bottom line, I don't think I can recomend these. I believe they need to beef up the base material or provide a protective sleeve/liner.

I think I can sleep anywhere

24 hours before you use this pad it is CRITICAL to let it inflate by itself and then pump it up and let it be! Of course it says so in the directions, and the very knowledgeable REI staff member reminded to do this. So needless to say it was inflated in the back of the SUV on the way to the mountains. I used it in a cabin sleeping on the floor so my older friend could have the bed. Great for those last minute trips when you get the last room and don't want to sleep on the pullout sofa! The pad is big and weighs 9 lbs. It inflates easily and comes with a little pump and a storage bag. Happy Trails!

A+

To start off with, I had a hard time justifying this kinda money for a sleeping pad when there are so many cheaper options out there. After reading every review I could find and watching some youtube videos I decided to give it a try. Glad I did, this thing is very comfortable. The first time I tried it I literally didnt want to get up. It can be as firm or soft as you like. Im a 50/50 side to back sleeper and its equally good at both. For reference im 6'3 230 and it has more than enough room. I plan to use this car camping as well as river camping out of a canoe. Its packed size is large but nothing unmanagable for my intended use. Also the provided pump is a big plus and it works good.
