Best option on the market!
The Lazer Speed light is a-m-a-z-i-ng! ... I mostly climb ice in inland ranges (Northern US Rockies and Canada) and I find myself needing a solid ice screw for both long objectives where weight is precious and something durable for getting pitch after pitch at local "ice crags." First of all the Laser light is very light is my go-to for alpine objectives. Period. No other screw. Second, I was skeptical about this screw's durability for heavy use/ ice cragging but it has really held up well!. Yes- technically it is not as durable as a full stainless option (regular laser) but they are so good and have held their edge so well and place so smoothly that I find I end up grabbing these first. Technical pro's: The Petzl angle/edge on the teeth of the screw is, in my experience the best on the market. It cuts into even ultracold, sublimated ice like butter. I also appreciate the geometer of the handle and crank as I find it allows me to get into varied surfaces more easily than other screws on the market. It is also SO lightweight. Cons: the only very small downside is that sometimes this screw does not stack, when racking on your harness, as well as other options. Pretty minor but fair to call out. Please note these are used for alpine climbing and ice climbing but those were not a option from the categories so I have just marked as mountaineering.
Great screw...
Great screw but if buying from REI make sure it comes in original packaging with thread protector and tip protector. I received one today with a tag placed by REI, and missing rubber tip and thread protector. The other issue with this is there's no guarantee this screw hasn't been compromised if it is indeed a return. Would be somewhat okay if this was purchased at a discounted price and identified as a returned item. REI is resolving the issue but hopefully they don't just send this one to someone else after returned.
Lightweight and easy to use!
This ice screw is definitely a new favorite! While it is very lightweight, I've found that it is still robust and holds well. The quick access turning lever coupled with the sharp teeth make this a fast, easy to use screw that quickly drills into the ice. No messing around with this one. I've read that the different knob colors make for quickly determining the screw length, similar to cams, but since this is the first in my collection, that's not a feature I've used yet. I think as I collect more of these, it will come in handy. Overall, this screw is a must have if you prefer to pack less weight, while still having an ultra-fast and reliable screw.
Good ice screw, not perfect
While this screw is definitely sharp, it wasn't noticeably different than earlier models, or competitors products. While I liked the ability to drive it in quickly once it was engaged, I found the head to be just to bulky and heavy, making it hard to set one-handed, especially with thicker gloves. Full disclosure, I tested this standing on the ground on pretty soft ice (not much ice yet in New England) but I would not be happy trying to place these on lead.
Confidence Boosting
This ice screw lives up to what it's described as! Laser speed is exactly how this product performed. The winter has been without cold weather up until recently, but a cold spell and some wet weather finally produced the first ice climbing trip of the season. I was able to get out off 215 on some of the open faces and try this equipment out. The Petzl ice screw worked flawlessly and gave me a sense of safety while climbing. The ice was not super thick but how easily the screw dug into the ice without any thought of cracking or weakening the sheet. The foldable crank was easy to open and close during the day when the screw was being used or placed back on my rack. The color stood out from my other screws on the rack, which made it quick to identify if and when it was needed. I definitely look forward to added several more of these to my rack this winter.
No compromises
Feels solid and robust, I don't see much compromise over stainless screws and the weight savings is great. I wouldn't hesitate to place these in any conditions. Sharp, simple, fast, going to be reaching for these on all my climbs. I'll probably slowly phase my rack to these to utilize the color coding
