Double Haul - Solid build - Very functional
Just got the Double Haul Installed on my 2019 Shortbed Double Cab Tacoma. I have an ARE topper with Yakima crossbars. My only complaint about this set up with the rack is the overhang our of the back of the truck. Longbed you wouldn’t have this problem - the seam between the half’s must be supported by the cross bar and that is what made my install stick out the back a little longer than I’d like. This is a situational problem. Overall it’s great build quality - exactly what I’d expect from Yakima. Rods fit very well and the side reel versus upright reel position put significantly less stress on the rods. Happy with purchase.
Bringing the fly rods everwhere means more fishing
This rack is a great solution to carrying fly rods and having them ready to go when needed, I fish with my kids a lot and its really nice to have them rigged up ahead of time. I use a couple of rods that are too long to fit without separating in the middle and folding over (spey and euro nymph rods) but this is still the best way to transport them. The carrier seems to keep water out when it rains, and when I wash the truck and does not add much wind noise. Its pretty heavy so getting it on and off isn't all that easy but it is very well built. My only suggestion to Yakima is to include a fish shaped sticker that could be attached, so as to avoid the frequent question of what the rack is for.
Use braided fly rod sleeves with this rod carrier
I fish 40+ times a year and travel with 2 or 3 rods. Two hour travel time to and from the river. Have owned the Yakima for 2 years. It is well built and thought out. And though it has internal plastic sleeves at about a month into using it I saw rub marks/scratches on the ferrules of my Winston rods. Scientific Angler braided rod sleeves solved the issue. Using Meguires compound and then the polish removed the scratches.
Not for Spey Rods
They say in the description that the top two slots can accommodate spey reels, yet the length of the unit is only 10’ inside. Spey rods are, by most definitions 12’ and over, so how can they claim this is for spey rods? Wish they would make one to accommodate up to 13’6” rods. Otherwise, great product for single handers.
