Look great, but uncomfortable

Having high arches and Metatarsalgia, I’m always looking for the perfect shoe for the hiking I do 2-3 times per week. Hiking shoes are always too stiff, and running shoes don’t always have the sole grip I want, or hold up well on rough terrain. A trail runner seemed like a good compromise. These shoes were made of great materials that looked like they would hold up well. I really liked the look of these. In fact I contemplated keeping them just to wear out running errands if they didn’t work for hiking. Unfortunately, they didn’t last 5 minutes on my feet because of the uncomfortable seams rubbing the top of my feet so I returned them.

Functional Trail Shoe

The website recommends purchasing 1/2 to 1 size larger. I am between an 8.5 and 9, so I chose a 9.5. Shoe is too large. Recommend that shoe fits true to size, and if between sizes, choose the size up. About 1/4 of the padding as my hoko ono's, but overall a nice trail shoe, profile is low to the ground. These shoes don't look like a classic sneaker and have (I think) an upscale style and design. I can wear these with khakis, jeans, capris or shorts. Also wish return process was easier; I would have liked to get a smaller size, but will just plan to wear thick socks. I would definitely purchase this brand again.

Great for road, tread, trails or town

This is a great-looking shoe with enough tread to handle most trails but the light-weight feel of a road shoe. I've been moving away from excessive cushion over the last few years and appreciate the thinner sole and minimalist feel of this shoe. I have a forefoot strike and have no problem with the amount of cushion. The heel is narrow enough for my weird foot but the toe box is plenty wide for some moderate downhills. I love that these look great around town and with scrubs, but the material of the top probably isn't robust enough for the rougher trails. Over all a perfect do-everything shoe!

Road shoe not a trail shoe!!

I sent them back!! I ran 7 mile and 10 mile runs on forest roads and trails, my usual routes. I was disappointed with these “trail” shoes. The upper was fine. The sole was too STIFF and UNFORGIVING. It felt like a trailshoe upper attached to a ROAD shoe sole. Wouldn’t allow my foot to flex or naturally respond to the trail which forced my ankle, lower legs and knees to react abnormally to whichever way the terrain forced them to go. Caused unusual soreness in these parts of my legs. If I continued running in the Puregrit8 I fear injury would be certain. These shoes have me questioning whether the Brooks engineers have ever run on a trail...? Bring back the foot hugging, responsive Puregrit 3 and I would buy 10 pair!!!

Still my favorite trail shoe.

I fell in love with the grit when I trekked through France with it two summers ago. I purchased the Caldera when the Grit wasn't available on the website. It must have been gone for a few days while being updated. I was really sad to see it gone and gave the Caldera's a try for a few weeks, but I was ecstatic when I saw the grit available (and updated!) on the website. The new update is great! Still grippy, but light, and I love the new look. However, I wish it still had the tongue pocket to tuck the laces inside. The grit will continue to be my go-to trail shoe.

Happily Surprised

Loved this shoe right out of the box! I'm not a trail runner but bought this shoe because I'm on my feet 9 hours a day working in a garden center. I wasn't sure if they were sturdy enough to handle the job, but I have been pleasantly surprised--I just hope they are made to last and will hold up over time. Wore them around the house for a day and then to work and to take the dog for a walk in the woods on day two--only issue would be the heel slip/gap that has been mentioned in other reviews. True to my size 8.5

Nice shoe

Overall I like the shoe. Light, easy break in time, no painful rubs from the heel liner., lots of room in the toe box. The only critique is that they seem to almost cause a bit of pronation in my right foot, which is a bit smaller than my left. It has so much room in the toe box that I have to really tighten it to keep it from slipping into pronation. I only use these for walking/running on mild trails with my dog, so I can't judge durability on rugged terrain. They suit my purposes and are comfortable.

Disappointed

After reading the reviews I figured I needed a half size bigger than what I normally wear. The 1st pair I bought, which was an 8 1/2 was too big. The pair I have now is still a little too big. I normally wear an 8 but I need a 7 1/2. The arch support is good if I am walking but I was looking for a running shoe. The sole is way too thick and makes it difficult to run. If you are strictly walking this would be great but I am very disappointed because this was the recommended shoe by Brooks.

Built for my foot, I guess

I was a little uneasy about buying these after reading some of the reviews, especially about the heel slipping. But I really liked my last pair of PureGrits and couldn’t find much else with the midsole drop, weight, & arch that I wanted. These were apparently made with the shape of MY foot in mind, after 70 miles I haven’t had any of the issues with the heel slipping off that I read about. The toe area might be a smidge longer than ideal for me, but not so long that I’d dare go down a size. I did feel a little pressure on the top of my foot right where the shoe bends the first 2 times I wore them, but that only last about 10 minutes each time. I see they’re on sale right now, so I just ordered another pair to have on hand. The only thing I’d ask for in these (and the PureFlow) are brighter, bolder colors!

heel slip = not good!

Echoing another reviewer, this is the only Brooks shoe I have ever worn (in 2 decades of wearing Brooks) where I have had heel slip problems. As the reviewer said, you can't fix it by lacing: there is only 1 hole at the top, rather than the 2 on most other models, and the 1 hole isn't in a location where you can cinch down the laces to stop the heel slip. I am disappointed, because I have enjoyed all editions of the Pure Grit, and now feel that I can't trust this model.
