Bought these boots for snow hiking cause in my other boots I was slipping and sliding on snow. Wore them to hike Half Doom in snow, but what no snow in January of this year. Oh well they are taking me to Mt Shasta in May. Hike without crampons till Helen Lake and try them out. Very sturdy boots, good grip on wet rocks and of-course no break in needed. Kept my feet warm and dry. I was looking boots which can take my abuse these are the one.
These boots are awesome...Comfortable, light-weight, breatheable and offer fantastic ankle support. Having a broken ankle, these boots provide great confidence while hiking and with the right orthotic insoles make hiking a dream.
I bought these to hike the AT and to travel to Iceland. I wanted a rugged boot and a waterproof boot. These are super comfortable.
I found a pair of these boots for an excellent price at an REI in-store garage sale and bought them even though I had recently purchased a considerably more expensive and heavier pair of backpacking boots. To me the Asolo Drifter strikes an excellent balance between support and weight. They provide excellent ankle support and yet are lightweight. I am a 200 lb. guy and I've used them on a 10-mile backpacking trip with a 37 lb. pack and they gave me plenty of ankle support. I've day hiked or walked another 100 miles in them and they are light enough for day hikes. If you have a very heavy pack (50+ lbs.) you might want something sturdier, but for most hiking and backpacking uses I think they are more than adequate. They are also comfortable. I've had no problems with blisters in these boots.
I bought these boots primarily based on a number of reviews that said they needed no break-in whatsoever and were comfortable right out of the box. I've now had them just over a year, and I think they're as broken-in as they're going to be, and they give me heel blisters every time I hike. None of my previous three pair of hiking boots (Vasque, EMS and Scarpa) did this. Looking inside the boot, I'm pretty sure it's because they have a liner seam directly in the middle in the back, right where my heel seats. Looking at my old Scarpa boots, their seam is covered with smooth fabric tape. Seems like the Asolo design is pretty darned dumb. Unfortunately, it took me a little over a year to figure this out, so REI will not take these boots back. I would advise anyone against buying these terrible boots.
Their customer service at their head office is terrible. Like never-again terrible. This is pretty much the same boot as the old Asolo FSN 95 but they replaced the fast wearing Asolo sole with a Vibram (that hopefully lasts longer than one season). But the price went way up despite the fact they are now made in Romania not Italy.
