Excellent all around fitness watch!
Overall a great product. Physical watch is a good size and I like the upgrades relative to the Spartan Trainer and the software upgrades only improve the product. The band is longer and thicker than other Suunto watches, which was a long-time complaint. That said, I think I like the softer silicon of the previous generations, but I get that people don't want to purchase new bands under heavy use. This is my only knock against the product. Some Suunto engineer is probably saying they can't win right now. Watch syncs with Movescount via my phone and has been a great motivating factor to get me out and active.
I love mine
I really enjoy using this device. I was initially concerned over two issues: size, and usability of the software and device. I have had a significant amount of experience with Garmin products, much of it negative. I wanted to make sure this was a good fit for me. Thus far, I use it cycling, running, and with a foot pod on a treadmill. I have used it with two separate HR devices, as well as a yahoo element. Thus far, it is flawless. I really think for the price point, this is a great device. I also love doing business with REI when I can. It's big, but I got used to the size quickly. Given the real estate of the face, I have been surprised about the durability...which has been great.
Solid watch
First impression of the watch was it seemed a little larger than I would normally prefer, yet had a good, solid body style. Despite the size, I was surprised at how well it fit my wrist and how comfortable it was throughout the day and during activities. I love the ability to customize the watch face, with each option providing as much or as little information as I wanted. A variety of professional looks as well as sporty options depending on my need. Moving from screen to screen or among the options on the watch was a little less than ideal. I wish there was a dedicated "back" button, as I had some trouble trying to exit back to the main screen. The current button designated to going back is the same one that moves you up so you end up having to go up the list of options before being able to then go back to previous page. The touch screen is a nice feature but was a little sluggish in general whether I was in the middle of a workout or sitting at the desk. It preformed fairly well on a rainy run but took a couple swipes to get it going. It's nice to have so many different activities to choose from when tracking, but I wish there were more ways to customize the data screens once you're actually in the activity. Having said that, the information provided during an activity is great and as far as I can tell very accurate when compared with actual. Overall, the watch preformed great and did everything I was looking for in a "sport watch" and a very quality watch once you get used to how to navigate all the features.
“The Does Everything Watch!”
Very well thought out design - addition of the HR Monitor was a true gold standard touch. A lot of capability and flexibility built into the unit itself. I am going to buy the new Spartan HR w/ barometer as soon as available.
Excellent watch for any sport...
Bought this watch for hiking, mountain biking, running and walking. Im giving the watch five stars because of its ease of use and excellent customer support (24-7). Suunto states that they are upgrading the software all the time and my watch had one upgrade so far. Hook it to your computer and upgrades the watch (very easy to do) The heart monitor is very accurate and the movescount web site has tons of into for your workout. Things that can be improved. Brighter watch face, larger font for text messages (for us 50 something guys) sleep tracking data that can be viewed on the movescount site. Suunto says they are working on upgrades for the above. I would recommend this watch. PLUS its is hand made in Finland NOT CHINA which was very important to me and made me choose this watch above all the others.
Bulky and not consistently reliable
I had been using a Garmin Forerunner 35 to monitor heart rate/zones during my runs, and I was excited about trying out a new device. The all-black Suunto is sleek and lovely, but unfortunately it was way too large for my small wrist (I am a petite 100 lb woman). I had to cinch it down almost all the way to the last loop in the band to keep it secure. The watch is also much heavier than my Forerunner and has a bulkier profile. I wish it laid flatter against my wrist. I had to adjust it fairly often when I went out for runs as it kept slipping down my arm. I found the heart rate monitor on the Suunto to be less reliable/consistent than that of my Forerunner (though not by too much). Perhaps this had something to do with how ill-fitting it was. The measurements were pretty erratic and frequently jumped around. However, the GPS seemed to connect more quickly, which is something that has always annoyed me about my Forerunner. I want to give the watch the benefit of the doubt because honestly it did not fit me well, and I suspect that that might have contributed to how well it was able to track my heart rate/zones during my runs. I found the menus easy to navigate and battery life decent (I don't often go out for more than two hours at a time, and typically I'd still have about 80% battery life after each use), and it is a very attractive device (meaning that if it had fit me better I could have imagined wearing it around town without feeling like a fitness tech geek), but in terms of functionality and accuracy I was a little disappointed.
A great watch for daily use and activities
I got this watch after having used two previous GPS watches several years ago. I had never owned a smart watch until this watch, or at least what I consider to be a smart watch. The Spartan seems to be great so far. I have used it while running, climbing, working out as well as circuit training. The GPS function is great. My old watches used to take a long time connecting to the satellites. With this one it took about a second. I live in a heavily wooded neighborhood and my path was always true with minimal lag due to tree cover. One of the things I like the most is the notifications I get coming from my phone. It gives you a line or two of texts as well as email senders and titles. There is not enough information shown to distract you from your daily business, but you know whats going on. It keeps me from checking my phone all the time every time it buzzes. Overall I think this is a great watch. The charging is super easy with the magnetic connector and connecting to the computer and phone app were easy as well. My only complaint is the band. It seems that my wrist is right in the middle of two sizing notches. So, it feels either a touch too small or too big. Haven't found the sweet spot with the sizing yet. But other than that the watch is super intuitive and would recommend it to anyone looking for a multi function GPS watch.
