DO NOT BUY THESE
Do NOT buy these panniers. You can do better. Everything about the mechanism to connect them to the bike rack is poorly done. Despite watching videos and trying multiple ways to have them actually stay on my rack, nothing has worked. Today, that nearly cost me when one came unhooked, the strap went into my bike rim/spokes and crunched itself out of existence. Nearly flipped me on the bike and gave me a good scare. Had to carry the pannier - fully loaded - home over the shoulder, which was not comfortable at all. So, not only are these panniers annoying and not secure, they are dangerous. I do NOT recommend. At all.
Absolutely amazing bags
These bags are freaking amazing. I bought them to carry my camping gear so i could make my bike camping trips easier. First trip out with them i got a flat on the rear tire and i cant even begin to say how much easier it was to fix the flat with these bags. The bags can be taken off the rack in like 30 seconds and put on just as fast.
Great size, easy on and off
These are the perfect size for errands, commuting and even picnicking. The adjusters arent easy to get in - i really have to muscle them in - but it's a one-time thing so not too big of a deal. the on and off is so simple. Def not a great bag to carry long distances, so just know that before you buy.
Very useful!
So far (~ 3 months) I've used these panniers for every-day commuting. They've served me well in very wet conditions (half-way submerged in puddle + pouring ran = nothing wet), are easy to attach to my bike, and a decent size (minor complaint here is that sometimes it's annoying to pack because it tapers a bit at the bottom). I bought the rust panniers, expecting a dull maroon; they're actually a strong orange. I know many people have used Ortlieb panniers for years, and expect to do the same.
I really like these bags.
I bought these over the classics because I really try to avoid PVC products when possible. I really enjoy these bags. They were a major upgrade from a set (diff brand) previously bought. Pros: 1. I love how truly waterproof they are, which is super important for me. 2. They open and close easily while attached to my bike rack. 3. They're not overly heavy. 4. They attach/detach to the rack super easy. 5. They hold SO MUCH. I previously had to stuff all my belongings (including 8.5" leather work boots) into two bags and still had trouble carrying it all. Now I can use just one. 6. I haven't noticed any unpleasant smell as others have mentioned, even from day one. Cons: 1. One large compartment and a small mesh pocket. Would prefer a few more organization pockets for the smaller items. 2. I really hate the turquoise color, but don't like black as I try to be as visible as possible. I wish they had more color options in the Back-Roller Free Panniers. 3. Within the first month of use, using a few times a week, one of the clips that attaches to the rack completely came off the rail that allows you to move the placement of the clip. 4 adults have tried our hardest without success to reattach the clip to the rail. I will be returning these bags. Despite the cons, I really think these are great bags. While I will be returning these bags (for the detached clip), but it will be an exchange for the same ones. I hope this problem is just a fluke and the replacements will keep me as satisfied as everybody else seems to be.
Looks great and super practical
These panniers are great! I've had them for a year and a half now and use them al the time, through all weather. They've kept my stuff dry and protected through rain and snow and ice (and salt). Truly waterproof if you roll them up. The fitting system on them is pretty useful and universal so you should be able to mount them on whatever rack. And they fit a lot more than you'd expect. I've mostly used mine for commuting and running errands so far. I was also super excited that they came in the lagoon color. NOTES: A few things that you might want to know: -When you first unwrap them they will smell!! Like a very strong plastic smell. I aired mine out for a while before I was ready to store all of my stuff in there. After a few days the smell subsided and within a few months went away completely. A year and a half later there is no smell residue. I have no idea if this is unique to the Free or is true with all the ortlieb bags. -The only technical thing that bas been annoying have been the little plastic additions that fit the mounts to my rack("reduction pieces" I believe): one fell off. This only happened on the one mount that seemed looser than the others - perhaps a very very slight manufacturing defect. Just a little annoying because they give you two pair of a few sizes.
Very nice and very organge
Love these panniers, super spacious and easy to adjust the hooks’ size and location. Already held everything dry through a downpour ride. Heads up the “rust” color is a way brighter orange than it appears in the pictures.
10/10
This is my first set of panniers and I’ve had a great experience so far! After a few simple steps and adjustments they fit nicely on my standard Topeak rack. I use one for commuting and both for grocery shopping. Would definitely recommend!
Disappointed in the durability
I ride rough and the system the use to fix the panniers to the rack kinda stinks. Plastic quality is cheaper rhan the 10-year-old Vaude bags I retired to buy these. The design is okay, extra points for versatility, but loses some points in security. Bottom line is that these bags are of relatively cheap construction and just cannot take a beating. Only had for a wek. So bummed. Hopefully REI carries Something more rugged.
Very disappointed
I ordered and entire set of panniers in the rust/black color for $700.00. I order this color because the picture shows them as being brown. The brown color was the same color as my Brooks brown leather seat. My bike is dark green and the brown color would look nice. I just received the pannier set today and it is orange. Not even close to brown. I am very disappointed and will be returning the entire set. I hope that REI updates the picture with the correct color.
