Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

After only a month and not many miles of wandering the trails, they are already coming apart. The lace holders are pulling out. The toe box is wide enough for my hobbit feet and they have plenty of cushion, so they feel great. The tongue on these is wider and covers the whole top even with super high arches, whereas my Olympus 2.0 does not (the whole reason I went looking for something new, due to discomfort this caused). Am going to try bringing them in to REI and see what if anything they can do for me because I do love the Timps. But the price is prohibitive for how fast they started breaking down, so I can't recommend them.
I loved these shoes! They were so comfortable, but started to fall apart after only 3 months.
I have very mixed feelings about these shoes. I have A LOT of foot pain and when I put these on it goes away. It's like walking on a cloud. I wish I had found this brand sooner... However, when I walk there's a weird squeaking noise that sounds like the shoes are farting.. that's embarrassing... Also, why do they only come in weird flashy colors? I wish they were black or even just muted... This bothers me enough that I checked the men's version to see if I could buy that instead, but the sizes aren't small enough (I think I would need a men's size 5). Overall, extremely comfortable shoe, but added source of social anxiety.
I replaced my LonePeak 3.0 for the new Timp, and took my first run in my new Altra Timps this weekend and was totally bummed. While they performed well enough in the dirt, duff and up and down hills, they were slippery as all get out on the rocks. I was on a downhill section and hit a short section of wet rock, the second my foot hit the rocks I slipped and nearly fell. I ended up slipping 2 more times on this run. When I got home, I rinsed off the dog on my walk way (which is made of stepping stones) and turned to put the hose away and slipped again! These are going back to REI today! Going back to LonePeak or La Sportiva Bushidos.
Everybody's feet are different, but for running trails and hiking, I've never found another shoe that is as comfortable as this one. The cushion makes all the difference in the world. They do run somewhat smaller. I normally wear a size 6 1/2 in a shoe but I wear a 7 1/2 in this shoe. I love the toe box. It has plenty of room to accommodate hurting feet. Even though the Altra Timp has plenty of cushioning, I do add my own insoles also. For me, it's like floating on air. The comfort is unbelievable in this shoe. The minute I put these on my feet in the store, I walked straight to the check out and my feet have been happy ever since.
They may look a bit "wonky" but these shoes are among the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn--even with my orthotics inside! I love the level platform, wide toe box and lightness (yet great support). I am not a trail runner, but have worn them for exercise, walking--and everyday use and couldn't be more pleased with the way they feel and fit--almost as if they were made for my feet! I've gotten compliments every time I wear them--and love them so much, I've even tried to convince my friends and family to get a pair (well, maybe in a more subdued color!) Hopefully, these will last me for a long time--but if not, I'll be looking for another pair!
I have an issue with supination - horribly so! I needed a shoe that would be lightweight but provide stability so that I wouldn't roll my ankles while backpacking while keeping me out of the heavier traditional backpacking boots. Finally!! This shoe definitely fills the bill. Lacing does allow for great customization, even as your feet change during long hikes. NOTE: Runs small on sizes - I traditionally wear 7.5, with backpacking shoes normally at an 8. But, I had to go to an 8.5 to provide adequate room in the toebox. I would suggest being sized in these before purchasing. Zero Drop not a problem for me and required no adjustment period. With that said, I am almost always barefoot at home, even when doing gardening and such.
I love my new Altra women’s trail running shoes. I don’t trail run, but I hike and backpack in them. I have a very hard time finding shoes that fit my feet. I have a wide toe box. The Altra shoes fit my feet perfectly because they are the shape of my foot. I love the gaiter trap on the back. It saved me adding Velcro to the back of the heel.
I have problems with one of my feet. I was told to try Altra footwear. It changed my life. I used to be an avid hiker for many many years. I now have Morton's Neuroma in my left foot caused my Rheumatoid Arthritis. I was having difficulty walking and then I tried these shoes. Wow!. They took all the weight off the front of my foot and it felt like I was walking on butter! This was last summer. Now I'm doing 45 minutes inclined on the treadmill five days a week. My life is so much better because I purchased a pair of shoes! lol Now if they could just make some basic colors like black for those of us who wear them daily! I am a thankful girl.
I love this original timp trail. Compared to the Timp Trail 1.5, it has a little more toe wiggle room, which I really need for my wide toes! These have a nice volume for my high instep, and are small enough around the heel. They lace up high and feel secure on. I hope that as the Timp style continues to evolve, a true wide width is introduced. My toes are a 4E and I have to remove the insole to make them work. Also in the evolution, some more subtle styling. I'm happy these trail soles don't have white soles that would instantly look dirty. But, I would like some mid tone that aren't severely color contrasting (like purple and orange).
