Extremely well-constructed; sizing incorrect
I've had another brand of wetsuit socks for the past few years that have worn through in the toe. I use them inside my Astral Brewer paddling shoes when river supping. Wanted to get these since NRS usually has high-quality products. These are a real upgrade in every way. As mentioned a lot, the size chart is just plain wrong. All my shoes are 10-11 US Men's; I can buy shoes/boots online and 10 almost always fits perfectly. Based on others' comments, I went one size smaller than the chart to an "L" rather than "XL". But they are still looser than I would like; but I'll keep them unless they start bunching up too much inside my shoes.
Sizing chart for women all wrong
I followed the sizing chart for the sandal socks and ordered a medium. They were way too big. I returned them and ordered a small. Still too big. REI didn't carry XS size so I had to order from NRS. For a women's size 7, the XS fit really well. I will be using them in mid-April so I don't have a clue how well they work, but wanted to warn other women of the sizing problem.
Perfect for SUP, size down
Flexible and comfortable, these kept my feet dry and warm despite wading in 40-degree water -- my husband's feet were wet and cold with the NRS 0.5 socks. Perfect with a T-shirt and leggings or shorts for SUP on cool spring days, and no interference with deck grip. Do size down: Both my husband and I got a perfect fit ordering 1 size smaller than the size chart suggests.
Going with why the size chart suggests
This is a great product at a reasonable price. Let’s me extend the use of my Keen Newport H2 sandals for colder weather and water. The 2mm neoprene is heavy enough to make a difference and thin enough to fit my normal size sandals without compromising comfort. Many reviews say size down from what the size chart says, and I can see why they suggest that. The socks seem to have a little extra volume in the forefoot, so they don’t necessarily fit “wetsuit tight” as you might expect. I ordered 2 size L and 2 size XL pairs so my wife and I could each compare sizes and choose the best fit. I wear a M 10 1/2 and usually take a wide width if I can get it. My wife is a W 11 and has a normal woman’s width foot. I went with the XL as suggested by the NRS size chart. The sock is sewn from 2 pieces, an upper and a sole. While the L was perfectly comfortable without a shoe on, my toes extended beyond the sole material and pushed into that extra forefoot volume, which seems to be an intentional part of the design. With shoes on XL felt better than the L with less seam contact at both the heel and toe area, and the XL wasn’t at all sloppy. My wife chose the size L even though the size chart also put her into a unisex XL. The length was ok with the smaller size and her feet just didn’t have the volume to fill out the XL. The XL did seem to sloppy to her. If you are unsure, I’d consider where the sole material lands on your toes and try to keep your heels and toes off the seems. The volume is a secondary consideration. With sandals on and laced/strapped up, water volume inside the mini-wetsuit for your feet is naturally restricted. You don’t need to depend on tight neoprene alone to limit water infiltration and keep your feet warm. If still on the fence about size, just order the 2 best candidates and return one. REI is great with returns!
Size chart way off
The product may be great, I didn't get to try the socks. I wear a women's size 7 so I ordered the medium per the chart. They are an inch too long!! I need to return these, but not sure if the small is going to be the correct size or if I need an XS.
size chart too big
The size chart, based on shoe size, recommends a size too large for these socks. I wear a 10.5 or 11 shoe, but the XL sock is too large.
Very warm
I couldn't believe how warm these kept my feet. I ended up not using them nearly as much as I thought I would. I agree with other reviewers to size down, but if you have long and narrow feet like me, you will need to compromise on length or width. Affordable price.
These sizes are not nortmal
I ordered a size small since it was the smallest size available. REI doesn't offer XS. The small size was swimming on my size 8 feet. I wasn't able to have them for my trip. I ordered size L for my husband's size 13 feet and they fit. His feet were swimming in size XL. Took way too long to get them delivered to the store. Almost missed taking them on our trip.
Great water socks, but the sizing chart is off.
These socks are great in every way except the sizing. I'm in an area where hikes have many stream crossings, and these are wonderful at keeping the gravel away and providing some cushion. However, I wear a women's size 9, so ordered a size medium as recommended by the size chart. They are way too big. A size small is on the way, and that should be a much better fit.
Not just for boating
I purchased these socks to camp with my daughter's Girl Scout troop in the pouring rain, as I couldn't remember how waterproof my boots were. They worked really nicely in the May Monsoon we had this year. I was out supervising the girls all day in pouring rain to drizzle, while 1-2 inches of water flowed over our feet and through our fire circle. My feet were dry and warm. In fact they were a tad too warm since just like water does come in, sweat doesn't go out. It was no issue as I took them off to air dry on the bench a bit during a dry spell. I never go camping in the rain with these. There is a snap above the ankle to hold the pair together in storage that the sensitive might not like or be able to tolerate. (This pair replaced an over the calf pair, one of which was lost in a move.)
