Perform well on the bike and on the ground.
I have been using Shimano mountain shoes (M087 & 89) on both my road and mountain bikes for over 15 years with SPD pedals because they fit well and I like being able to walk around. I am planning a trip to Norway later this summer that would involve a 7-day road tour and 2 days on the Rallarvegen trail and decided I needed something more rugged and better in wet conditions. So, I have been using my new XM7 shoes about a month on trails in San Diego near my home and am very pleased with the fit and performance on and off the bike. We don’t get much rain here but I expect they will work fine in the wet. The fit is similar to the other Shimano shoes I have. They seem to run a bit wider than some shoes (Pearl Izumi, Sidi) and that works for me.
9 month Canada to Colombia bike tour
I cycled from Canada to Colombia over 9 months with these shoes and sandals only. The 2 sufficed just fine. These shoes held up very well and only started to fray and tare in the last month or two. They work well both on and off the bike and don't make a clicking sound when walking. They are durable. They don't dry very well so with multiple days of rain they will be wet and heavy for a while. They served me well and I will be purchasing another pair for my next tour across Europe.
More narrow than other Shimano shoes
Another review site warned that these are narrow–YEP. I'm told by show stores that I have normal width feet so, consider these shoes narrow when ordering. My other Shimano shoes aren't this way, maybe it's the Goretex liner.
Great All Road Touring Shoe
I have a wide foot with a high arch. Normally wear a size US 8.5, purchased the US 9.0 and these fit well with a variety of socks due to the adjustability of lacing. I've ridden them appx 3000 miles in everything from driving rain (Chile) to hot desert (Utah), mostly on backroads, but also on pavement. On the Chile trip, we left our house in them, drove, flew, toured, hiked, and flew back in the same shoes...for 37 days. Worked great and eliminated the need/space for extra shoes. I've done maybe 60 miles of hiking including "Little Death Canyon" in Utah, and they walk just fine. With a liner for waterproofing, they can get a little warm in hot temps, but not that bad. 100% waterproof and we always carry a short, ankle height waterproof gaiter for torrential type rain. I did cut the velcro strap off eventually as it didn't seem to serve much of a purpose, and it got in the way when lacing up. Snip-spap, snip-snap... problem solved. Great as an adventure shoe...
