Very stable, but side vent not shielded, too rigid
sun burned man
My biggest concern is that the side vents are not shielded, so the gap in the vent allows sunlight to reach the scalp. For some odd reason, the panels in the side vent do not overlap, they simply left an exposed open gap. Only the front and rear vents have overlapping panels to shield the gap. Although the brim is very stable and does not flop, the brim a bit too rigid. If your head is a longer oval than typical, pressure points form on the front and back of your head while the sides do not make contact, and the brim becomes a wavy taco shape. Some of the pressure is relieved if you buy a larger size. My head is 60-61cm circumference and I have the XL size. I would have preferred if the hat were 1 or 2cm larger to relieve the pressure points, or if was able to stretch more or was less rigid. However, the very wide and stable brim does provide good sun protection. An alternative hat, the North Face Horizon Breeze Brimmer Hat, has 2 very large vents that are completely shielded with overlapping panels. The vents can also be flipped up to open if for any reason you want to. The brim is soft and flexible, so the XL size forms to the shape of my head without pressure points, however the brim flops around and doesn't maintain a flat shape. Portions of the brim will dip down and block my peripheral vision and it isn't easy to manipulate its shape. Although this flexibility makes it more packable. Overall, the Outdoor Research Sombriolet is very stable, but this rigidity may be uncomfortable for people who's heads are a longer oval. If you have very thick hair on your head, then the gap in the side vents may not be a problem for you, but if you have thin hair or are bald, then you may need to stitch an additional panel over the side vents to protect your scalp from sunburn.

Absorbs sweat and great sun protection

I've been wearing one of these for three years and it's great! Excellent sun protection for your head and neck. I was training with a backpack in 104 degrees and the hat was pulling so much sweet from my forehead it was dripping off the front of the brim. The brim will absorb swear and dissipate it keeping it from running down your face. My sunglasses never get sweat on them while wearing the hat. It's very functional and does it's job perfectly!

Adorable blue

Finally something that fits my head. The s/m was a better depth for me, but the area around the forehead was too tight so I sized up. It’s nice to have a fun blue color that is different from most hats. Keeps the sun off my whole face and doesn’t blow off in the wind with the ties tightened.

Terrific Lightweight Sun Hat

I purchased this hat in preparation for a mission trip to El Salvador in October of 2023. October is the "rainy season" there, so many days were overcast but some were sunny. I worked outside doing manual labor. I wore the hat every day for a week. It held its shape well and shielded me from sun. It is very lightweight and comfortable to wear. I've seen reviewers complain that the sweat band is lighter colored and visible. Definitely lighter colored. Visible from the right angle. But let's face it. If you are wearing this hat, it is not a fashion statement. It is because you are serious about sun protection. I threw it on top of my clothes in my checked bag so that the brim was flat the the rest of the hat was crushed flat. It traveled very well that way. I put it in the washing machine (not the dryer) when I got home and it came out great. It will now replace the hat I've been wearing to work in the community garden. I recommend it.

Big Head? Big Hat!

I’m generally disappointed with the available selections in hats, given the larger-than-usual size of my head. This stylish and effective answer to beating the sun’s rays fits perfectly and is easily adjusted for different conditions.

Great everyday hat

This ended up my everyday work/hike hat. Adjustable headband makes for a snug fit, stiff brim edge allows reshaping. Fonts into pockets and packs easily. Has great breathable vents and some water resistance.

Excellent Sun Hat

The Sunbriolet continues to be an excellent sun hat and great value. However, some changes to recently made hats have decreased the quality of the hat a bit. The sweat band is now a very light color - the previous use of a black sweat band made for it less obvious since a bit tends to show when the hat is on. Also, the tensioner for the elastic adjustment strap is now a friction fit piece of rubber instead of the press button closure used on older models. These changes were probably made to keep costs down. I would rather have paid a little more to have better quality.

Big shade

Got this shade hat after being tired of the brim on my prior hat brand always flapping in breezy weather and basically being useless on windy days. This brim is very wide and stiff enough to withstand light to moderate winds without loosing shape. Elastic cinch strap around crown of hat helps keep it place. Loads of shade with plenty covering back of neck. Breathability is great with air slits in top on sides, front, and back. Inside is mesh with loose nylon exterior covering over mesh interior. Sweat band on interior is a little loose, but it's not a big deal. Very good for outdoors use. I've hiked with it several times now.

Weird brim

So I wanted a hat that I could wear hiking, to the beach, in the pool , whatever - and one that had a more rigid brim so that it wouldn't blow up in the wind and not give my face protection. This hat seemed to check all the boxes. But once I actually got it on, the front brim always wants to flip up by itself. No wind required. Its brim is stiff but so much so that the foam or whatever is in it is "stressed" to the point where it refuses to lay flat or tip down at all in the front. So basically, it looks like the wind is blowing in your face the way it sits. It's a bummer.

Sombriolet sun hat logo

I bought another OR sombriolet hat for water fitness. It's not the same hat, because the new hat's logo now stands out more than the hat itself. I liked the subtle logo better.. now people just notice the logo. I've enclosed pics of both... please don't be like Nike and all the others who just want their products to advertise! It's better if people have to ask, "oh, who makes that hat?" I won't buy another one if the logo is big & bold.

Not the best hat, no

Had this hat for two years. That generation hat had a wire for the XL size. Didn’t hold up well, became very curved (picture extravagant Indiana Jones fedora but on a dad bod). Also, ventilation openings cannot accommodate Southern climates. Reasonable cover for light rain in autumn weather though. As with any nylon/poly cloth, stay away from flying embers.
