Nice improvement over the Kaiju

I bought this tent after the main zipper on my 4-person Kaiju failed after a couple years of heavy use. North Face seems to be aware of that problem, because they've redesigned the main door and poles on the Wawona in a way that seems to take some stress off of that zipper. Other improvements that I appreciate are the adjustable clothesline, which runs along the top of the interior walls, and the single-walled design, which allows for a little more interior peak height, and makes it much easier to set up (it was tricky even for me, at 6'2", to get the rainfly up and over the old tent on my own). I can set it up in five to ten minutes on my own. This tent is also very sturdy in bad weather; I found that to be the case with the Kaiju as well, despite some reviews to the contrary. I think this can be attributed to the fact that I tend to set my tent up as intended by the manufacturer, including staking out my guy lines properly, and positioning the tent so that the front is facing into prevailing winds. The rear vestibule has also been made significantly larger for the Wawona. Cons: This is a heavy tent, and packs away larger than the 4-person Kaiju. That said, the thing is built like a brick sh*thouse, and I like the new storage bag design. There is one less vent that the Kaiju had; this plus the single wall design has caused me to have some relatively minor condensation in certain conditions. This is easily mitigated, however, by using the two large windows (yes, you do have to exit the tent to close the windows, so use your judgment if rain is likely). I also don't like the interior pocket design as much in the Wawona, and there are only four of them, vs. six in the Kaiju (however, the clothesline adds a lot of organizational capacity, so it sort of balances out). Picture attached is my first night using the Wawona tent on the Wawona River, in the Wawona campground in Yosemite. Just worked out that way!

Not usable in cold weather
LeAnne

We expected the tent to have a mesh and a solid fabric separate zipper doors. Because they are just mesh doors, the tent does not work well in cold weather. We pretty much froze at 40 degrees. This is because when it is windy, the air comes rushing through the tent no matter how much of the tent you have closed up. Sadly, the question asked about the door came after we purchased the tent. I will say the tent held up in heavy wind, though it was a bit noisy. The side windows requiring you to go outside to close them are a hassle but it is the doors not having a fabric one that is the reason we are returning the tent after speaking to your nephew who works for REI.

Highly Recommended!

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Our tent performed without fail during our trip to visit several national parks. During our stay at Badlands National Park, there was a massive windstorm around 2:30 AM. Our tent was unscathed, while other campers had their tents completely leveled. I'd say that speaks volumes. We also camped at Yellowstone National Park in Grant Village and our tent again held up with no problem. My only complaint is that I wish the tent had interior doors that zipped as well to seal out cold air/debris. The outer vestibule zippers sometimes get stuck. I would highly recommend this tent. Badlands and Yellowstone tested and approved!

Simply a great tent!

I just spend three weeks at a seminar in the Jura mountain region of France, having bought the Wawona 4 a few days before I flew to Paris from LAX. I packed the tent, sleeping bag, air mattress, and footprint in a North Face bag and had room left over for a few extras. Setting up the tent was easy and quick. I love the shape and color styling of the 4. It stood out from the other tents and received many compliments. It is spacious inside with plenty of room to stand and move around. Very comfortable as can be seen in the picture. Although most days were sunny, we did have four days of heavy rain and wind gusts of 30-40 mph. The Wawona 4 stayed solidly planted and completely dry. Early morning brought fog in the valley. The rain and fog did cause condensation on the inner walls of the tent, but this was not a problem and did not cause any dampness to my sleeping bag, clothes, etc. The four side windows provided great ventilation. The front and rear outer doors were spacious enough to store my two large bags and keep them dry, although it would have been easier to exit the tent if they were just a little larger, but no big deal. All in all, I am very happy with the Wawona 4. It is my second North Face tent, and maintains the workmanship and strength of materials that North Face is known for.

Easy to pitch car camping tent

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I've used this tent for a year now during my summer/ fall car camping trips. It's easy to set up, roomy and you can stand in it. It's waterproof so no rainfly is needed also, the tent is well ventilated. I would not take this tent to the beach or desert areas because of the design, sand and dust will get inside the tent. I'm a happy camper!

DO NOT BUY

[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Main structure (Orange) pole broke on the second use. My family and I are avid campers and are very familiar with tent set up and tear down. While this is a common issue it should be covered under warranty (you have to send it in and wait for a decision from North Face) wait time will be at least a month pre COVID 19. Which means we will not have a tent for camping season unless we buy another set of poles at $110 + shipping. I expected better from North Face, especially since it is a well known problem. Do not buy this tent or any others with these types of poles unless you're looking for something to just take up space in your garage.

Poorly Designed...

I love The North Face brand, but somehow the design team on this tent must have been in a fog. In order for a person to open the side windows, you need to exit the tent and roll them up or down. How inconvenient is that? I'm sure the genius behind this design had a reason, but that reason was not well planned out. No way can one person puts up this tent. It's a two person operation. The poles are sturdy but you need to work at setting this tent up. Other then that, I think the tent is well constructed and could possibly be used as a 4 season tent in light snow areas.

Perfect Car Camping Tent

I bought this tent for a camping trip in north eastern Mississippi and was very happy with how it performed. Pros: Setup and tear down is very easy - I could do this myself in about 10 minutes. The tent is very roomy inside. I can easily stand up at 6'-0". There are several interior compartments (one at each corner), plus a drying line and lantern hook inside. Windows are pretty good size. With the outer doors open (screen doors closed), there is plenty airflow. Cons: My only complaint is that the waterproof claim on the tent is only mostly accurate. On my trip, it down poured at night for several hours. In the morning, the walls of the tent (single wall) were damp to the touch. No water got into the tent, but if you were sleeping up against the wall, you would have been wet. Not a big issue but worth mentioning. The ground beneath was bone dry when we left.

loved it until it broke

We loved this tent! Had to return after 3-4 uses after it broke under high winds. The metal vestibule pole broke in half and we packed up in the middle of the night as it was totally collapsed. :( Pros: so spacious, love the fact that it doesn’t have a rain fly for bugs to get stuck under, love the hang dry lines inside, love the color, love the huge vestibule
