I brought this jacket on my 2 week honeymoon backpacking in Norway last fall and it performed extremely well. Nothing came through during hours of hiking in downpours, even where the straps of the backpack rested on my shoulders. Loved the length and that you can cinch the hood to keep the rain off your face. You'll need rain pants though because without them the water just pours off the jacket onto your legs...but your upper half stays completely dry. Also white gets very dirty but it was the only color available when I bought mine.
This jacket keeps me dry as intended, but it’s very stiff and loud. It reminds me with every move that I’m wearing it. There are also red labels that have been printed on the outside that I was disappointed to see there. I don’t usually write reviews, but for the money paid for this product, I felt it necessary to share with other customers the things I wish were different.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This a perfectly functional and high quality rain jacket. I got this in black which is really a dark grey. This jacket works great but it definitely looks like it's meant for extreme sports/conditions and is not casual looking. It's also a lot heavier than a shell which is my biggest issue with this. It's a little stiff, noisy, and it's not great for packing for travel, but it also doesn't say that in the description so that's my problem. I am 5'1 105lbs, bought a small, fits great for layering over things and not tight around my hips like xs. I only worn this a few times but definitely wish I picked something a little less aggressive looking and lighter weight.
I love that it isn't dwr coated. It actually works like a waterproof jacket should. It may be a little on the warm side. I sometimes hike in brushy areas that are very marshy and wet and rainy. Works great and fabric is durable against all the brush.
Good fit. Fabric is fully waterproof and seems as breathable as the best 3-layer waterproof/breathable products I have. Front zipper and front pocket zippers are waterproof design, but pit zippers are not and do leak a bit in a heavy, prolonged rain. Also, the pit zips don't open/close easily with the jacket on. If the fabric holds up to wear and stays waterproof and breathable, I will not go back to DWR coated fabrics.
After reading about Columbia's OutDry series, I wanted to test out the breathability of a non Goretex, non DWR jacket that is waterproof. I wore this as a shell in 27-33 degrees F while hiking in the snow. With one thin base layer and a fleece underneath, I was warm and comfortable for a 2 hour uphill hike in the snow. When the wind kicked in at the top of the mountain, I did not really feel the wind. I opened up the pit zips climbing up as a I got warm and even opened up the huge hand pockets for more ventilation, as the pockets are mesh. When I got back in the car and there was some snow left on my jacket- it melted and rolled right off. The jacket material has the texture of something like thin duct tape, so no water can settle in the fabric. I think the jacket will be too warm and not breathable enough during the late spring and summer, but then again, when it's really that warm, who even wears a shell while they hike? Some CONS: the hood toggles are cheap and not easy to tighten quickly, but it's nice that it comes with a back velcro for smaller sizing. The jacket could use a small loop for hanging the jacket on a hook and the zipper is NOT two way. I can see using this jacket as a waterproof shell for fall, winter and maybe early spring.
I was very excited to try this jacket with OutDry Ex technology. One of my biggest pet peeves is “D”WR coatings that are anything but durable. I’m sick of expensive jackets that let the outer face fabric wet out after just a few months of use. I had the chance to test this jacket on an uphill hike in cool weather with a thunderstorm including hail and moderate rain. The fabric waterproofness was as advertised - water consistently beaded up. But I built up a little sweat inside on the hike up, and due to the unique construction I stayed wet and cold the rest of the hike! Because the non-waterproof fabric has been moved to the inside, the INSIDE face fabric wets out with sweat and then it DOES NOT DRY OUT since it is trapped between the waterproof membrane and your body. It just stays wet and cold against your skin all day. So if I had a choice, I guess I’d prefer an outer face fabric to wet out when the DWR wears off. At least then it wouldn’t be against my skin making me feel cold and wet, and it would dry off faster once the rain stops since it would be exposed to sun and wind.
I just received the jacket and it is snug through the bust area. I usually wear a large and this is too snug for comfort. I am going to try to go up to XL, but then it might be too big. It looks and feels like a really nice coat though.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This isn't a jacket you'll get for fashion (though it's got a cool sporty look). It's a jacket you'll get to keep rain off. I was tired of rain soaking through my rain jackets, and this one doesn't have that problem. The medium is perfect for me, since I plan on putting down jackets/layers under the shell at times. That said, if you want a snug-fitting jacket without layering under, consider sizing down.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] I give this jacket high reviews in quality and I love the Outdry technology. As an outdoor enthusiast in the PNW staying dry is always important. Sadly this jacket was too small in the chest area and since it was already an XL I’m out of luck. I know Columbia is working on more sizes to give people like me more options, I’m just sad this jacket isn’t yet offered in a size to fit my active body.
