When I first got these pants I was contemplating buying several more in different colors for my work pants. I work in the water resources field and Loved the water resistance and pockets. After only 2 washes the pants no longer bead water very well and the seams are coming apart. The Columbia Tag on the back has only a few threads holding it on. This is the second pair of Columbia pants I have bought that have manufacturing defects. Quality control and durability just isn't what I would expect from an "Outdoor oriented" company like this.
I bought 4 pair from the manufacture of these pants because one pair I had from local store was so comfortable. Problem is that although all sizes are marked the same not one pair are alike. each one is a little different then the other in length & waist. One also seems a little baggier then the others. I got 4 different colors of them same style yet fabric in one seems a little different. Was going to return a couple but as my wife pointed out you might get 2 more with same problem so we will just have them hemmed. All that being said I do love the style & feel of these but would think a company like Columbia would have better quality control.
Purchased three pairs of these at one time for my husband who walks outdoors monitoring conservation property, but who also has to look neat enough to go into business offices. Unfortunately, after wearing for just one day's wear, I noticed that the crotch of the pants was already wearing and piling badly. I chalked it up to it being just that pair...then the other two proved to have the same wear pattern...again after just one wash. I'm glad these pants weren't any more expensive than they were or I'd be rethinking my favorable opinion of most things Columbia.
I waited to review these pants until I wore them 5-7 times to make sure they were decent quality. I am glad I waited. When I purchased these pants they felt great. I have owned them for about 2 months. Where the crotch seam is and where the belt loop seams are, there are holes and separations. This started happening after about the third time wearing them. I just wore them for everyday use but was hoping I was going to be able to wear them hiking and fishing etc. These pants are pretty low quality. They are now my most expensive oil changing pants since thats about all they are good for now that they are falling apart. Columbia needs to step it up.
I own half a dozen of these pants. The weight (or lack of therein) is impressive. They tend to run a bit short for my long legs but not a problem when wearing boots or high tops. Super comfortable with virtually no movement restriction when jumping over logs or boulders. Phone pocket is probably the feature I like the most. Keeps my LG from falling out in the middle of nowhere. The zipper pocket is great for money clip and IDs. My only complaint is with the rear end of the pants, they wear out too quick. Even the ones I wear to work (desk job) wear out rather quickly and rip. As I said, I have half dozen of these and I'll get more.
I have a pair of these and a pair of Griphoist. I love both of them, BUT...the Rocs run a bit large in the waist, but not enough to bother. The Griphoist were a perfect fit. I miss the extra zip side pocket on the Roc (though they have a zip pocket just above the knee. I find that pocket not as convenient as the one on the Griphoist which is behind the right side pocket. I enjoy the side pockets because I travel a lot and they are more secure. If I were to choose, I'd take the Griphoist, but do like the Rocs. One other comparison. I ordered 2 pairs of the Lander pant - but they were WAY larger than either the Rocs or the Griphoist.
I am a newspaper reporter and part-time teacher. I bought two pairs of Ultimate ROC pants to wear while teaching a college class. Last night our class was interrupted by a tornado warning after which I returned to work and was assigned to go back out and photograph storm damage. After hours of splashing through puddles and pouring rain, I returned to the office and found my pants had repelled most of the water and my feet were dry (thanks to waterproof hiking boots). The Omni-Shield Advanced repellency really works even after a couple of washes. These pants look nice enough for business casual and can hold up in extreme conditions.
I used to LOVE these pants. I purchased these pants about a month ago from a local outdoor sports store. I wore then about 3-5 days a week for work. When I say "work", I'm not talking about something physical, but mostly sitting in a car, sitting talking to people, and sitting in an office. Within a month, the seat on these pants split horizontally. If they were a poor fit, I would expect the split to happen vertically. As it is the rip looks like the pants have been shredded and it follows the fabric texture. Hope you see the pun in the title.
I really like that the pants look business casual yet still have thick belt loops and all of the pockets that these pants have. I wear a hand gun, cuffs, a badge, credentials, an extra magazine, and a phone every day as part of the job so it is very handy to have all of the pockets. I also like how comfortable the pants are. Unfortunately, however, the material is not as durable as I would like it to be. I have have had a small tear just above one of the back pockets from carrying too much weight (my wallet). I would like to see columbia sacrifice some level of comfort for better durability while maintaining a look which can be passed off as business casual.
I was a bit hesitant to order pants online but so glad I did get a couple pairs of these. I own the original ROC pants and rarely wear them since they just don't feel as good as some of the other pants I own. Up until now my REI slickrock pant were my favorite. These Ultimate ROCs feel tough. THey have very comfortable stitching on the pockets which makes you want to have your hands in your pockets all day. The snap is a welcome feature for anyone who looses sewn-on buttons like I do. Belt loops are super durable. Attractive embroidery on the rear. Feel tough and look good and are my new favorite. Cons are the cell phone pocket is not large enough for smart phones.
