Surprisingly Efficient
Bought this light weight solar lantern before a camping/backpacking trip with modest expectations for utility. We were really quite surprised by the efficiency of the solar cells and the quality of the resulting light. I left the lantern on a picnic table under a shade tent during one afternoon-not in direct sunlight to charge and we were able to use the lantern for the next 3 evenings (approx 2-3 hrs/nite) on the resulting charge. The design of the inflatable lantern gives the light a nice diffuse glow, rather than a typical harsh bright LED light. Very happy with this purchase-have already recommended it to family and friends.
It works!
I'm usually skeptical of solar-powered electronics as they tend to lose their charge quickly or be really touchy about the amount of sunlight they need. While I haven't taken then on the trail yet, my roommate and I both have them and they work better than expected. They fully charged sitting in a windowsill and the charge is still holding. The light is bright but with a soft glow so it's suitable for setting up in a tiny tent. Lightweight, collapsible, but sturdy materials. We plan to strap them to our packs to charge during the daytime when we hike, though it almost seems unnecessary since the charge lasts so long. Good product!
Great light, but hard to inflate/deflate
I used this on a back country trip and really enjoyed having it in my tent every night. It held a single charge for the whole week, at least 7 hours of bright light, which surprised me. It can be used as a flashlight with a clear bottom and matte sides and has hi lo, white flashing and red flashing options. However, I dreaded inflating and deflating it each day, the stem is hard to squeeze and hard to blow into, especially with sub freezing temperatures and cold, clumsy fingers. I think the developers could re-engineer the stem and the product would be five stars.
Great, lightweight lantern--no batteries required!
Thoughts: I just bought this prior to my last backpacking trip in the Columbia River Gorge, and I will not be forgetting it on any overnight trips in the future. The lantern is a great product, and even has a red SOS mode, which I did not realize prior to my purchase. If you're rough with gear, you might consider bringing a bit of tape along to patch a hole in it, just in case, as it is air-filled. Pros: Great design, no batteries required, solar powered, multiple lighting modes, fantastic price, and takes up very little weight and space. Cons: None
Compact Cooll
Really like this light ......plenty of diffused light for reading. If they make a gen2 I would suggest a battery status light and a sturdier strap for hanging.
Good concept, needs a little work.
I don't like using batteries and hoped this would be an alternative solution, however I will need to keep looking. I took this on two one-week long trips last summer and it stopped working the last night of the second trip. I hooked it onto the outside of my backpack hoping it had just drained its charge completely, not such luck. I ended up returning it and when I did the silly thing turned right on! I still returned it because I did not want to have it happen again. I also had an issue with condensation gathering on the inside of the lantern, which makes sense to happen since you inflate it with your breathe. However, I like the concept and design which is why it still got 3 out of 4 stars.
Great little light
Bought these as gifts for my cousins grandboys. Lit up the immediate area and their tent. They left them on during the night.
Bright light
I already had two of the larger sized solar lights. This one is just as bright and it has lasted for about 12 hrs with no recharge. This things packs down very small, it's lightweight and recharges by the sun.
Great product!
Ultralight and worth the price!!! I wish it's a little bit brighter but before I purshased, REI staff warned me
Cool light
An innovative, inexpensive, reliable, lightweight source of light. The design is a collapsible polyethylene cylinder that is inflated by blowing air into it, like your air mattress. Great for reading or playing cards in the tent.
