Only partially waterproof
Wore these as the outermost layer for the first two days of a backpacking trip during continuous light rain. At the end of the day my knees, ankles, and butt were very wet. They seem to do well with light water, but any form of pressure and the water soaks through. The positive is they dry very quickly, I laid them out in my tent and they were dry again the next morning. They are comfortable and light weight, however tend to slip down since they are a very slick material and rely on a very small drawstring to stay up. This made walking across difficult terrain challenging, I kept having to adjust the waist to keep them from sagging. I would not recommend these for heavy rain conditions or for sitting on anything damp.
Good for wind, wet sand/mud, and wine.
Brought this with me backpacking the northern section of the Lost Coast recently, 25 miles over 3 days. I bought it because I thought we'd get poured on, but turns out we had blue, sunny skies without even 1 cloud till day 3 when we got a bit of fog. Can't complain! But day 1 had 20-25mph winds. Sometimes the wind was so strong you could lean on the wind with your entire pack on and not fall or if you weren't careful you could get blown off the trail completely. The weather was pretty much perfect, but the wind chill would have made me uncomfortable if I didn't have these pants on. There were what felt like a gazillion stream crossings (ok 20-ish) and these were easy to roll up and stayed up during the crossings. It was nice to have them on for the soggy areas near the streams when you're on 1 knee or your butt tying or untying your boots. That way you don't have a wet knee/butt when hiking afterwards. And when someone accidentally spilled wine all over my pants I didn't break a sweat. It just rolled right off. So far I'm a happy customer. I didn't go easy on them. I was in the sand, mud, grass, streams, and occasionally being spilled on. Not a bad all-over pant if you're concerned about possible rain on a backpack or hike. Not too warm or too cold. They definitely breathe. A little tight around the hips so I'm worried if i gain 3lbs. I won't be able to wear these over my hiking pants. As of now it has some trouble sliding over my light hiking pants because of the snaps on the back pocket. So I wouldn't wear this over your winter layers. Definitely more for warmer springtime weather when you can wear it on its own or over a light layer. I also used these pants as a way to keep the sand out of my boots as well, which it excelled at. There's a velcro strap you can somewhat tighten around the boot. It's not airtight, but it helps with keeping 99% of the sand out of my ankle-high boots. Never needed my gaiters. I like looking cute and these rain pants were the most form fitting so throwing practicality aside I decided to give these a go. They look better than any of the other rain pants at REI which tend to give me a kim kardashian butt, but not sure you'd want to take this into an alpine environment when you need a lot more layers.
Stays dry, not clown pants
I bought this a few weeks ago, used the pants on one rainy backpacking trip. They kept my legs dry. It was relatively cold so I think maybe in warmer weather they might get hot on the inside. But the reason I chose them is that they were not ridiculously baggy on my slim frame, which all the other pants were that I tried on. I got a small and am 5/7 130 for reference.
Just what I was looking for
I bought these for officiating swim meets in the rain. Have worn once in the rain and they repelled the water. They are not bulky, slip on over regular pants and shoes easily. Nice color, a lavender/grey. I'm 5'8 138 lbs, got the medium, and feel that was the right size. A bit poofy in the rear if drawstring pulled smaller but that is hidden under the rain jacket and I dont feel one can expect them to fit as precise as street pants do.
