Pls DO NOT buy these boots. I used them for exactly 7 days and chunks of the sole started falling apart. This is not what I would have expected from a Vibram soled boot. The waterproofing on the boots worked well, but the super-accelerated wear on the soles was very disappointing. REI was very gracious in accepting the return without any fuss. Not recommended.
The most comfortable boots i own, excellent traction on the trails and rocks. I would recommend these.
These boots are dangerous on wet rocks! No traction! I have falllen several times when my feet have gone out from under me, and could have been seriously injured or died. My last 4 pairs of boots have been Merrells, and I have loved them all, until now. With my other boots, I could walk up slick rock surfaces in the rain effortlessly. I am an experienced hiker, 1500 miles on the PCT, etc., so I know what I'm talking about. I don't know what Vibram has done to the rubber in these soles, but it isn't good. When the boots were new they were a bit slippery, but I thought they would gain some grab with wear as the soles abraded. But I have a few hundred miles on these boots now, and they haven't gotten any better. Even in dry conditions the soles will slip on rocks and smooth surfaces, and the least bit of moisture, even dew, causes them to slip and slide. They're fine on dirt, gravel and sand, but who can use a boot that's only safe when conditions are ideal? Last weekend I was hiking on a good trail after rain, going very slowly and carefully because I know how these boots work in the wet. I was going slowy down a trail construction of three stone steps on an easy grade, placing my feet deliberately, and whoosh! My left foot slid out from under me off the trail and I fell flat, bounced and rolled into a somersault over rocks coming to rest on my butt. It was a miracle that I escaped with only bruises and scrapes. I'm done with these boots. They are unsafe. Do not trust these boots. Buy a different model of Merrell or another brand. Your life and safety are too important to risk on boot soles like these.
I bought these for my son for a Colorado trail thru hike. So far they have tripped him three times. Twice sending him to the ground with a pack on. The top lace hook is unnecessarily large and catches the loops on the other shoe. There’s no reason for the hook to be any deeper than the laces. These should be pulled and revamped before someone hurts themselves in the wilderness. I am giving them an extra star because they are actually very comfortable. I am wearing the low top version and like them a lot.
How inconsiderate to ask for a product review the day after buying a new product, give someone a chance to try and use it... This is a replacement for my "old" Moab 3 boots. Along the way, REI fit me with the wrong size, then I only received a small portion of the cost of these barely used boots, once or twice since they fit so bad. On buying the latest pair, the sales person explained the difference between regular and waterproof and then sold me the wrong one. Basically, I am rating the REI store personnel who have consistently screwed-up time and again. It should never have taken three trips to replace my old Moab 3 boots.
Despite the description claiming these boots are waterproof, the pair I bought two weeks ago were not in fact waterproof. Walking thru wet grass resulted in soaking wet socks & feet. Major failure of a brand new pair of boots. Otherwise I loved the boots, but non waterproof is not negotiable. Fortunately REI is good about returns. They said two other customers had recently had the same issue.
Great Hiking Boot. Have bought a second pair and the shoe also. I was in Glacier National Park and had taken the wrong pair of boots for the many days of hiking. By the third day my ankles were very sore. It got so bad I had to get something else. So, I bought these boots and what a relief they were. Even with the sore ankles from the wrong boots I had taken the Merrell's helped SAVE the trip. By the end of the trip my ankles were not sore and I got relief starting with the first day that i wore them.
I bought these Merrell Men's Moab 3 Mid Waterproof Hiking Boots, and they were a huge disappointment. Despite being advertised as waterproof, the boots are extremely slippery. On wet terrain, especially when walking on large granite rocks, they provided very little grip and felt unsafe. I expected better traction from a hiking boot, but these failed to deliver. I wouldn’t recommend them for anyone planning to hike in wet or rocky conditions.
I was looking for outdoor footwear suitable for use on rough, uneven, muddy and wet terrain. I'm not a hiker as such but I do "bank fish" in areas needing sure footing. Also needed boots that did not exacerbate some "bunionettes" related to my relatively flat, wide feet. These boots really fit the bill. Amazingly comfortable right out of the box! I am probably going to get another pair for backup.
Comfy from first wear, albeit mildly stiff, though in the way that feels like it's structurally supportive, not necessarily likely to cause blisters. Most notably, NOT waterproof. At all. On my very first day wearing them, I walked outside in the rain for a few hours. Water came into both shoes, on both sides of the toebox. It soaked through my inserts and my socks. The whole reason I bought these was to have something reliably waterproof. I'm returning them.
