I used to love the old patagonia capilene shirts and pants. I used them on a nightly basis during the winter months for work (yes it gets cold in Texas). After a few years of wear it was time to purchase a new shirt. The material was noticeably different outside of the box and it seemed more stretchy than older versions. After the first night of wear, the material didn't stay as close to my body and seemed to get stretched out and have ruffled accordion look. I feel that the same level of warmth is still there, but the overall look was different and not as sleek in my opinion. I wish I could find more of the old style capilene shirts.
Great first layer! Works so well with other layers. Very non-bulky. You can feel it hold body heat right on your skin. I've used it cycling, white water kayaking and skiing. Very versatile. Doesn't retain body odor like the original capilene did.
Seems the Polartec® Power Grid™ effect is similar to wool in that you can palpably feel the warmth it stores, and yet it is breathable and doesn't feel stifling. Went for a test run today in chilly weather, was very comfortable. Wicks moisture and regulates temperature like nobody's business – looking forward to taking it out on even colder days!
We purchased this product as a warm layer under our wet suits for white water rafting in Patagonia, Chile this month. The crew top was light weight, warm, and did notbind at the arms or shoulders as we paddled. I'm looking forward to wearing it hiking as a extra layer.
Haven't worn these yet (I bought two - one blue and one black) but they are NOT what I expected. The old heavy weight Patagonia Capilene was a robust Polartec fleece fabric which I have worn for years as a base layer or worn alone as a shirt without additional cover. The new Patogonia Thermal Weight Capilene fabric is literally an underwear-only combination of alternating horizontal "stripes" of something similar to the old heavy weight Patagonia Polartec fleece, interwoven on a thin, almost see-through sheer polyester fabric. It remains to be seen how this new (space age design?) Patagonia Thermal Weight Capilene performs compared to the old fashioned heavy weight Patagonia Polartec fleece Capilene.
These base layers are expensive but they are my favorite by far. Super comfortable but also do a great job of keeping you temperature regulated. I own several other brands as well but I always pull this one out. I own two now and will probably get more.
Great shirt for the cold weather. Expensive but worth it. I will be buying another one.
Exactly what I’ve been looking for. Second purchase and thinking about ordering a 3rd just in case they discontinue these
