The best duffel for the size.

I just bought the 60l Black Hole and love it. The build is amazing and the features are perfect as well. The material is super durable, but flexible as well. I have the Marmot Long Hauler in the 50l and in comparison, the Black Hole is a better bag. Even though it is 10l larger, it feels like a smaller bag. And the material of the Marmot, while nice, is a bit too thick for my tastes. The thickness lends itself to developing permanent creases and dead spots, which I know will lead to future tears or holes. It does have a lifetime warranty, but I'd rather have the build of the Patagonia. As far as the backpack straps go, they are SUPER easy to remove. I've read a few reviews with people having troubles with them and by looking at a set of pictures in one review, I can tell why. You do NOT shove the D-ring through the buckle, but slide the buckle THROUGH the D-ring. Takes about a second to do each side. I highly recommend this product. Expensive, yes. But I have no doubts it will last for a long time.

Wanted to like it - but not quite there

Bought this to supplement my North Face duffels. Not really enthusiastic about it - it seems like the details weren't thoroughly thought out or real-world tested. Pros * good looking bag - attractive fabric and trim * seems to be well made - good stitching and joints Cons *unlike every other duffel I own, the zipper feet don't overlap to allow them to be locked together. Which allows the zipper to gap and provides a less secure attachment through the dipper pull-tabs (since the tabs can be ripped off easily) *No external compression straps *Internal straps don't really compress the load, and the location allows the load to shift to the ends. The straps also seem to always migrate to the bottom when you release them, leaving you fishing for them. *The handle wrap is really tight and finicky to wrap and attach (yeah, I know that's whiny, but it was a real pain to fasten in the cold) *The shoulder strap attachments are a cool interlocking d-ring set up at the top. Unfortunately, the attachment digs into my shoulder muscles under any kind of real load. And, again, it's kind of finicky to attach. *The top opening is kind of D-shaped. Provides good access, but it a pain to try and zip closed around the sharp corners when it's loaded. *My favourite "not thought through" detail and then I'll stop whining! There's a cool little "zipper garage" for the side pocket....unfortunatley , it's too small to completely cover the zipper foot....but it's big enough to snag on things when you drag the bag in and out of wherever you've crammed it. Summary Well built, attractive bag that just doesn't work for me. It's kind of become an expensive gym bag while I shop for another option in this size.

Perfect carry on size

I need this bag for a three week trek across the Pamir Highway but I was very worried it wouldn’t work as a carry on so I tested it out. I packed it with everything I actually needed for the trip, which made it about 90 percent full. (Easy to zipper, about three inches on the end that squished in.) No gate agent has looked twice at it. It fit fine in the overhead and under the seat on a tiny CRJ from Atlanta to Montgomery (a 30 minute flight that has mini overhead bins). So as long as you don’t stuff it to the max and you can board early enough, should be fine!

What You'd Expect

For the $130 MSRP this bag meets the basic expectations. The medium size is perfect for a weekend worth of clothes or a decent gear set ex. Snowboarding gear(no boots), climbing gear (70M rope, harness, shoes, chalk bag, small rack). The material has a rubbery and durable feel; I dont see any fragile parts on the bag. I would have liked to see an additional side pocket seperated from the main compartment with the same material the exterior is constructed with. I also wish the bag had a single shoulder strap because I usually use this in conjunction with a medium backpack and carrying both is awkward. Overall recommend buying this if price isn't your main concern. My REI duffle is the same size and much lesser quality, but the REI bag is a much better value.

Solid duffel

So far so good with this duffel. Worked great for a week long ski trip. Managed to pack ski boots, base layers, outer layers, and casual clothes. I did pack fairly light in regards to non ski related items. Appears to be an extremely rugged and durable exterior, although I only have one trip under my belt with this bag so far, and I ordered in one of their brighter color combinations to make it easier to see when picking it up from baggage claim. Definitely sticks out versus the typical plain black luggage. It's cutting it close but I was able to carry-on this bag on my flight back without them giving me any hassle.

Shoulder strap solution

For those of you desiring shoulder straps for this product I have a simple solution. I purchased 2 carabiners and attached them to the top daisy chain loops on either side of the bag. I then used an extra shoulder strap. Works like a charm.

Great Travel Bag

I bought this bag about a year ago and I have not been disappointed. The bag is durable. It also just swallows stuff up. I have used it on several trips. The bag is a great carry on for flights and a good bag for trips up to 7 days. For my trip to Utah, I packed all of my jackets (3 of them) and 5 days worth of clothes with no problem. The backpack straps are great, as I was forced to walk half a mile in Hartsfield-Jackson Airport with great ease. And as a side note, I think that it is borderline carry on luggage. I have never had a problem with it being carry on luggage, but please check your airline's regulations.

Excellent Bag!

I recently bought this bag for a week long trip I just took to Guatemala. This bag is amazing! The quality is great and it stood up well. It doesn't even look like it's been used. With this trip I was on we did a lot of traveling around the country, in and out of hotels and a bus, and the backpack straps made it amazing to get around with. We flew all carry on and this bag had no problems getting through security and being in the overhead compartments. Having the backpack straps also made it great wandering through airports! Would highly recommend this bag to anyone!

Perfect duffel bag for a carry on!

I just got back from a two week trip to Europe and this pack was so wonderful to have during my time abroad. The backpack straps worked very well for me. When flying back home on European airlines, I did check in my bag at the gate because the plane was full of carry-ons. Besides this, the bag fit well in the overhead compartment, and with a little Sea to Summit travel soap to reuse my clothes, this bag fit all that I needed for the trip. I would highly recommend this bag!

Back straps are a pain

I bough this duffle due to the removable back straps, but they are a pain to put on! I read patagonia's instructions (as an answer to other customer with the same problem) and you have to have really strong fingers or like braidn teasers to get this through! If you watch videos, some even say they are not removable. (Mine came without them on). The D loop fits just enough through the other plastic loop, so turning it is impossible with bare hands. Another detail, not that important, is that the inside straps don't work well either, keeping the load in place. Compression straps, for the outside work better. Other than that, it's ok. It's strong and repells water as expected. I would have liked having the main zippers to close allowing a lock or other security item.

Great Bag for Lightweight Travel

What a fantastic bag for lightweight travel! Used it on a 14 day safari in Africa where we had weight restrictions on various small plans. Worked fantastic. I cannot over-emphasize the benefit of the backpack straps being on top of the bag and not on the base which could get dirty (especially in Africa) Not a lot frills but used one packing cube which worked well. It is well made and still looks new after the trip.
