Huge capacity, great design for office or trail
Excellent design! Looks fantastic and holds a ton. Wanted a single pannier to bring to the office that could carry: computer, notebooks, changes of clothes, and room for extra. This nails it. I love it! One "con": The pleather straps aren't fully adjustable. They have some settings, but are largely for show. So I don't think you can't necessarily get a good roll down rain proofing affect (it is not truly in the style of a dry bag), but it should be fine in up to moderate rain. I was planning on stitching in a magnet into the velcro strap, but for not doing fine just not using the velcro at all.
Bag design has a flaw
I researched bags online and thought this would be a great choice and I bought two. However there is a big flaw. The back of the bag is not attached in a significant way to the back board and the seemingly cardboard pieces which are supposed to add shape to the bottom of the bag don't work. The bottom back corners of the bag curl back and get caught in my spokes. If I were adding to the design I might add a small rod sewed along the bottom back seam to prevent the corners from curling. When this bag wears out which will likely be soon, I will have to find a better bag.
Awesome bag!
The ease of use is AWESOME, the attachment hardware is super user friendly. The strap is great for toting around while off the bike and the size is great for lots of stuff. I received this for Mother's Day, as I am constantly in need of more space. My kiddo rides her own bike but we still need extra jackets, towels for the pool, and plenty of snacks....etc. I wish it had another pocket on the other side for a water bottle, but that's just me. And a zip pocket is always helpful. But really I LOVE my new bag!! Timbuk2 never disappoints.
Good overall
Easy to mount, but would prefer a different bottom securing snap/mount than the velcro. Time for slight re-engineering.
A fifth of what the Timbuk2 Especial Viaje Pannier was.
This bag is the lrice as the Timbuk2 Especial Viaje Pannier was and it is nothing compared to that backpack pannier. Why Timbuk2 stopped making that pannier I'll never know. Its extremely rare for bike backpacks and panniers to have enough organization and pockets. When wil Timbuk2 listen to its customers.
almost great, with a fatal flaw
Mostly I like this pannier, so good things first! The design is understated and minimal, and seems thought-through. I love how high capacity this thing is. Also the quality seems mostly good. The two things I don't like: 1) The little velcro stabilizer strap is very flimsy, and super finicky to attach to my rack struts/chain stays, especially once the bag is really full. 2) I get heel strike when I ride with this. I wonder if it's in part because that velcro stabilizer doesn't really do its job holding the bag in place? Or it could just be the square shape of the bag, or placement of the top attachment hooks. Anyway upshot is I've only been using this pannier when I know I have to carry large loads like when grocery shopping, and not daily around town because the heel strike is just too annoying. It seems they've updated the stabilizer to something more robust on the newer model, but I'm a little wary of spending the $ on the new model since I'm not 100% sure it'll solve the heel strike problem.
Update on "Almost Great, With A Fatal Flaw"
I'm dropping my opinion of this bag down from four to three stars, because after a total of maybe ten uses, one of the snap closures has ripped out of the webbing. This is not shaping up to have been the best purchase...
Like looking in a black hole
I used this bag one day for my commute to work. It held all my stuff but was like looking into a black hole reign to find my clothes and makeup to get ready.
This is my third bag from TIMBUK2 and I love them all!
What a great bag! I can use for so many things! Best of all I can attach it to my bike and away we goooooo! Super strong and I love it!
So much space!
As a bike commuter in Philly, I use this bag primarily to pack my books, papers, clothes, lunch (and sometimes dinner!), and anything else when I go to school/the office for the day. It is wonderful to have so much space to stick it all in, plus the pocket on the side for my u-lock and cable. I also use it on the weekends to go grocery shopping, and can fit a whole watermelon in there along with many other grocery items. I needed, and love, the space. That being said, there are three minor drawbacks to this bag. The first is the mesh net thing inside the bag. I get why it was created, but I haven't found a use for it yet, and so it just sort of hangs in the bag and gets in the way as I try to get things in or out. The easy solution here is that I've decided to simply cut the mesh out. The second are the buckle straps to close the bag. I'm not sure why this design decision was made, but I would much prefer a faster closure process, like plastic clips or snap buttons... or something! The final drawback is that other than the pouch/pocket for my locks, there isn't a small exterior pocket that I can stick my small, often needed items (wallet, cell phone) in for easy access. So when I want them, I have to struggle with the buckle straps and then dig around in the giant bag to find them. I may solve this by sewing on my own front pouch, but that would take a lot of ambition. All of that being said, I am very happy with this bag, again, mostly because my primary desire was the space to pack everything I need.
