Shimano is the way to go
I bought a used Salsa Mukluk with Sram x5 shifters and x7 rear derailleur. I rode and was climbing a steep hill and the chain broke and somehow the left shifter broke, must have hit with hand when trying to recover from chain break. Replaced shifter and chain. The next week I felt like something was stuck in my back spokes. Looked down and the rear derailleur was broken. It was cold but that is no excuse, it broke off right where the cable is fed through derailleur. Now I think SRAM derailleurs stink, ordered XT shifter, rear derailleur and SRAM chain (Chains are still good) No problems ever since. All our bikes have Shimano XT, can't be beat for reliability.
