made loading harder
If you are looking for a rack carry a kayak upright, this does the job at a high cost. I wanted this to help load an Old Town Heron tandem by myself. It's a wide flat bottom kayak and does not center well on this carrier while loading, but is secure once adjusted. The rollers only make contact at a very steep angle on my forester, and at some point you need to tilt down and kayak forward motion is impeded by the rubber pads. It was much easier sliding the kayak up on the center ridge, but flipping was a challenge. I'm sure if I cover the rubber pads it will be better, but I have to give 2 stars for making loading harder.
Hoping for sturdy performance
I had older versions of the Handroll (Hully Rollers) and Deckhand (Mako). They were both for the round bars. I would have reused them with my new Corebar system if Yakima had offered adapters, which I was told they don't. They both seemed sturdier than the Sweetroll. I was going to buy the new Handroll and Deckhand (The old Mako was way better design) but then I saw the Sweetroll on the shelf as a complete kit for less money. I hope I don't regret the compromise. The Sweetroll has only one small roller on each side, where as the Handroll has four large ones on each side. The kayak did roll on pretty well, but the system all seems a bit light weight. I saw someone review Yakima system with the comment that the strapping system didn't incorporate the crossbars. Be sure you following the written strapping instructions because is absolutely does. I read reviews post purchase. Most of the negative had to do with unwanted rotation on round bars. The saddles on my round bar system did rotate as complained about but I never found it to be a problem. Of course, I don't have to worry about that with my new Jetstream bars. One last bit of advice when mounting. On my truck, I never had to worry about damage to my rig. With Jeep, I have to protect the back when pushing the kayak on. I lay my life jacket over the car and attach it to the rack with two short bungy cords. Works great.
Good carrier for long/heavy boats
My kayaks are 17+ feet, and relatively light, but it was a getting to be a pain lifting them above shoulder level into the J-racks after long paddles. The Sweetroll is much better in that I can position the boat on the rollers and just roll the entire kayak up and in place. Very stable on the highway when properly secured and with bow and stern lines in place. My only concern is the long-term corrosion resistance of the tightening mechanism, especially with winter road salt exposure (for those of us who paddle year-round). Use a suction cup mounted shower bar on the hatch to lean the kayak against when getting into position! Works wonders!
Exactly what we needed!
We have a 12 foot tandem sit-on-top kayak that weighs 84 pounds, and is rather wide as kayaks go. We tried to Jay Low initially, but my partner and I just could not muster the strength to elevate the kayak to a side position that high over our Honda CR-V. This design was much simpler...we laid several towels against the car, and simply rolled the kayak up onto the carrier. It was simple to install/adjust on the Honda OEM roof rack, simple to lash down, and with the kayak bottom-down the height is also more manageable. Great job, Yakima!!
Easy loading!
I love this rack! I am a 59 woman, 5'5 and have bad knees and back. I can load my 55 lb. fishing kayak totally by myself now! Easy install on and off. low profile means I don't have to take the rack off to get my car in the garage. I did buy a rear window suction roller to assist in guiding the kayak. I would also recommend buying some rachet ties for the bow and stern ties as they are much faster than the ones supplied. No whistle noise while driving and kayak rides well. I like Yakima much better than Thule. Better quality and easy install. This rack made all the difference between me going and not!
Easy to load alone
Excellent single kayak carrier. I wanted to be able to load my kayak by myself and this carrier makes that possible. It was EASILY installed on my subaru factory rack (no tools required) and I load my boat effortlessly by just sliding the bow onto the rear rollers. I appreciate that it came with the necessary straps. Buy this carrier and spend more time paddling than loading/unloading or waiting for someone to go with you to help load your boat! I am 60 years old, 5'1'' and have a 42lb, 10 foot boat and I load my boat in minutes.
Easy on, Easy off and Secure Travelling!
I bought this after talking with other Kayakers, it really makes loading and unloading easy. I wanted the ability to load/unload by myself. I have a brand new 2017 Outback, a brand new Kayak and didn't want to worry about damaging the car or the Kayak. This gear does the trick!
Best rack system I have seen...
I previously had a set of Mako Aero Saddles, replaced them with these and I'm glad I did. The contact pads are small enough to be snug against any surface at almost any angle. My jackson cuda 14 was so tight that the bow/stern straps are completely unnecessary, even going 85mph on a suburban. My only gripe is that you really have to wrench them down so they don't twist on the round Yakima crossbar. really that's more of a comment on the crossbar than these cradles. Very easy to attach/detach from crossbar, lockable, tight fit. Great rack!
Easier loading than for a J-rack
I'm 62 years old with a leg disability, and it started to get too challenging to load a kayak onto my J-rack. The Sweetroll makes the process much easier. No hoisting and turning, etc. You load the kayak up the back of the vehicle and engage the rollers of the back cradles. You still have the challenge of rolling the kayak straight down the center, but that gets easier with experience. On mine and most vehicles, you probably couldn't get two kayaks on your roof without adding a J-rack, but that's not an issue for me. I recommend the companion locks to protect the cradles against theft.
Sweet roll
Great product, replaced a set of Mako saddles and Hully Rollers. The sweet roll does not "roll" on the round bars on my carrier and are much stiffer then the Mako saddles or Hully Rollers. When using the Mako saddles, they deformed and allowed the kayaks to move left and right on the bar and off the saddles which then caused the tie downs to become loose. The Hully rollers worked well but again "rolled" on the round bars and because of the design seemed to put more of the pressure from the weight of the kayaks in a smaller area then the sweet rolls. The sweet rolls are rigid enough to prevent the movement off the sweet rolls. I used these with a Hobie Pro Angler 12 and a Jackson Cuda.
