LOVELY sweater, but very light
Again, this jacket would really be considered a down sweater, or under layer. My son LOVES it and thinks it is warm enough, but a true cold snap would render this too cold.
Runs small, but like weight
I bought these for my boys to wear in the spring and fall (and warmer winter days). They run small, so I had to send them back for a size up for each (the XXS was too small for my 4 yr old, and the S was too small for my 8 yr old). I don't have large boys.
Great for Kids at a great reduced price
I bought this jacket a month ago for my large 11 year old grandson. The XL fits him well, hopefully he will get at least 2 years out of it before a growth spurt. I did a lot of comparison shopping (I am a card-carrying UL backpacker, except I don't carry the card because it weighs too much) and this was exactly what I was looking for. The tags said water resistant, which I expected for a synthetic jacket, but it did not say there was a DWR finish. so I added some aftermarket NikWax spray just as a precaution (the only reason for not rating at 5 stars). It is not a winter jacket but a synthetic "puffy" suitable for shoulder season hiking and high altitude summer nights. It appears durable, and at the reduced price it will be great even if he outgrows it in a year. With good base layers and a breathable rain shell my grandson feels like a true mountaineer.
Not as nice as previous year
My boys have outgrown same jacket from 2 seasons ago. I was hoping to replace with the same jacket. However, this new version has no hood and no zip-off sleeves. The boys loved the lightweight jacket and the versatility of being able to convert to vest and remove the hood. I did not buy this jacket, because they definitely need one with a hood. I was disappointed in this new version of the jacket. I did not purchase. I hope next year REI brings back the hood and removable sleeves.
