The jacket is waterproof to me, but for what is no more than a thin shell, i.e. a rain jacket for 500 dollars, it should be better made. The seams came apart when I washed it once at the bottom. They are not stitched, so can and do separate. I sewed it back together as what happened doesn't affect function. Other thing that is now happening is the zipper keeps splitting. I wore it rarely over last season and now this winter. For this kind of money these things just should not be happening. As another reviewer said you can probably find performance out of a cheap jacket just as well. At least if it doesn't fall apart, you haven't lost much. I do like the design overall though. If it were a 70 dollar jacket I'd be Ok with it and probably buy again.
I bought this jacket for hiking/climbing, and as an all around rain shell. I took it on a weekend trip when rain was in the forecast. Prior to that, I wore it maybe 3-4 times to take my dog out for a walk when it was either a light rain or a rainy day. It never got wet enough to be tested. During the weekend trip, we got caught in a downpour, and within 5 minutes, it was wetting out on the sleeves and back. This jacket was not worn enough to warrant treating with a nikwax type product prior to using it in the rain, so was really disappointing. My boyfriend wore a shell he got from Wild Things for $100 in the same rain, and he stayed totally dry. I ended up having to throw a $3 poncho on over my clothing because my jacket failed so miserably. I definitely expected better performance for a basically brand new product that cost $500. I re-treated it with nikwax and we will see how it does next time. If it fails again, I'll have to pursue replacement or refund. Definitely not REI's fault, and I know they will stand behind it, they are awesome.
I HIGHLY DO NOT recommend purchasing an Arc’teryx product. The product is defective with "lamination issues throughout" and becomes “irreparable” and “no longer provides weather protection either” said the warranty service representative. My pull cord tore through the bottom. I probably could have fixed My Large Griffon myself, but with no warning or contact from them (having both my phone # and email address) prior to determining that my jacket was rubbish or trash, they discarded it after I shipped it to them fully insured. They threw away my $300 + jacket without even contacting me first, then claimed that they are not responsible even though it was in their possession. My only option was them giving me a new jacket that I didn't want. They don’t make any jackets remotely similar to the original polartec fleece jacket that I loved. They refused to give me my money back after they put it in the trash or lost it. I told the Rep, “I want my money back?” They were not able to comply. “Where can I get my $ back?…the original place that I purchased it from??… they didn’t throw it away. When I informed certain local dealers of my experience, they were appalled. The poor quality customer service representative while back paddling decided to hurriedly stick two random jackets in the mail, one a dark grey, a color which I don’t wear, another a Medium, which would never fit. Neither of them I requested. Obviously they are only concerned with ending the matter, not pleasing the customer. I requested to speak with his supervisor on two different occasions before he would release his contact information. I emailed the supervisor on 9/30/15 and received a return email on 10/20/15 regarding this matter taking him nearly 3 weeks to reply. He said the garment has “multiple faults” and “this is not the first time this has happened and probably won’t be the last.” In the end, Arc’teryx was not able to resolve this calamity as they refused to give me my $ back and no jackets that they currently have on the market are acceptable and comparable. Final conclusion, A Loose Loose for me due to Extremely Poor Customer Service, Very Very Poor Quality in their garments, AND NO ACCEPTABLE REPLACEMENT JACKET OR $REFUND.
not only is it waterproof, it's also wind proof. Fantastic jacket!
I've been trying to find the right technical shell that will work for backpacking, hiking, biking, skiing, and mountaineering. This is it. After trying Marmot's Minimalist, I found that their fit was too trim for layers and the hood was too small for helmets (or even my own head..). The Beta LT has an athletic fit that leaves plenty of room for layers underneath while still being flattering on its own. On that note, size up. I'm usually a small, sometimes even XS, but had to get this in a Medium. For reference, I am 5'6" and 120lbs. I could have probably gotten away with a small but a larger size is more versatile. So far the jacket proves to be waterproof in a PNW climate. I ordered the Emerald Jade color, and it's much more emerald (green) than jade (teal) than appears in the online photo, something I'm happy about. At the 50% sale price right now, this jacket is a no-brainer! Contrary to the poor reviews here, you will find most other review and retailer websites rate this jacket highly. And with REI and Arcteryx customer service, you can't go wrong. (My BF sent his torn Arcteryx jacket in to Arcteryx last week and they're shipping him a new one today, so I don't know where these other poor reviews about the company are coming from.)
