Way comfortable

I agree with other reviews of the Birkenstocks -- they run a smidgeon long -- about a half size or so. I'm a 9 or 9.5 and the 40 is my size, but on the verge of being too long. The narrow width is also right for me and all my friends who have this. I have a high arch and they work well, and other friends who have flatter feet just adjust the straps differently. I would warn that the suede tops curl after a while, so if you have them cinched to the tightest notch you will have more curled leather at the end. The oiled leather ones are much less prone to have the straps curl (but they are a bit longer to break in). I have both, and find I wear my black leather ones out and about and the suede ones for scuffing around because they look a bit more slipper-ish. But that's just me. Oh and be really grateful that REI sells the soft footbed version... you really want that one... if you are getting these for comfort (as well as style) definitely make sure you are getting the soft footbed. And if you're a newbie to Birkenstocks... be careful of a couple of things: The shoes with the blue writing on the inner sole are the ones with the soft footbed, and the ones that have the outline of a foot that is solid are the narrow width (really a regular width for Americans) -- the ones that have the line drawing of the outline of a foot are the wider (medium) width ones. REI sells the soft footbed in the narrow width. Good choices both for most buyers. They are definitely the ones I like best. AND if you are considering buying from elsewhere, and want real leather uppers, be really careful about what you are getting... unless the uppers are either suede or oiled leather, they are made out of partly or fully synthetic material... which not only doesn't look as good after a while, but they break in differently (e.g. Birko Flor/Nubuck)

Narrow width, not specified
Wide foot lady

The shoe is just as you'd expect so it's unfair to Birkenstock as a 3-star rating. However, it is a disappointment for me to order the shoe assuming it is normal width (outline only of foot designation by Birkenstock labelling) when in fact it is NARROW width (solid shading of foot). If you are shopping for Birkenstocks in particular across the internet, you will know what I refer to as the width is often not specified, especially this year in women's sizes, now that Birkenstocks are becoming a mainstream/high fashion trend. I suspect that Birkenstock is releasing these shoes only in narrow (A/B) now which is a huge disappointment lately. I need a wide shoe, with my wide forefoot plus bunion. This product should be labelled in the description as a narrow shoe. I am not even sure it comes in normal/ wide width with the soft footbed. If you are looking for a quality shoe but definitely need the wide cork footbed, keep looking elsewhere.

Love my Arizona soft footbeds

Finally I got it right. I'm a narrow 37 soft foodbed with leather or suede straps kind of Birkenstock foot. My first pair of Birkenstocks I ordered a 37 Granada wide soft footbeds. The wide Granadas flopped around on my foerot from side to side but I wore these sandals for 2 years because I didn't realize I could find a better fit. Then I ordered a pair of narrow 37 Arizonas with the regular footbed and electric pink Birko Flor straps. I missed the soft footbed and the straps got scratch marks easily. I finally won with my 3rd pair. Narrow 37, soft foodbed Arizonas with taupe suede straps. For reference, I wear Asics 7.5 wide athletic shoes. The european size says 39.

Third pair of Birkenstocks

Prior to this I only had "normal" width Mayari style birkenstocks. The first pair I bought in a 39 and then the second pair in a 38 with traditional style footbeds (not soft). So, this is my 3rd pair of birkenstocks but first soft footbed and first Arizona style. I was worried about narrow REI offers as I do not have narrow feet (I would say they tend on a little wider than average in the toe box of most shoes) but after doing reading online I found that the Mayari which I wore previously tended to be a more narrow style and decided to go for a 39 in the Arizona as they are supposed to run wide. I think it's going to work well. I'm almost worried the 39 is a little short but I think it will work fine as fitted.

Blisters galore

I was looking to buy my very first pair of Birkenstocks and decided to purchase these with the membership discount that was going on. I tried these on at my local REI store and they fit well. I started the break-in process soon after and ended up with large, painful blisters on my arches within a couple of hours. I noticed after the fact that they were narrow width, not regular width. I also read that the soft footbed could cause blisters as well. Double whammy for me. I ended up returning these. I purchased a non soft footbed pair in regular width at a different store & what a HUGE difference! REI, please stock women's Birkenstocks in regular width!

LOVE LOVE LOVE These

Love these, BUT didn’t at first. The raised toe bed didn’t hit my toes where it should/where they bend (I believe because I have long toes) so hit my foot too high up/in the wrong spot. I had worn them a bit so couldn’t return so thought as I own them and they cost a lot, I’d suffer. So suffer I did. Then, low and behold, a couple months in, the soft footbed molded to MY foot and they are now my favorite sandal. They are not just my favorite sandal, but my favorite sandal EVER! So, even if you are unsure of the feel (if you’ve not worn these before) they WILL mold to your foot and become incredibly comfortable.

good shoes but appear to be a return

The sandals arrived in a completely torn apart box, though the actual sandals appear to be fine. They were a gift for our teenage girl so it's kind of janky to have such a destroyed box - they're all into unboxing videos now (yeah, that's totally silly but whatever). I tried to tape it back together but it was hopeless. for $140 I think it would have been nice to have the item in a new box. If these were a returned item, it would be nice to not have been charged $140.

Caution - women's = narrow

If you're familiar with Birkenstock sandals, note that REI has split the Unisex sizing into narrow for women and regular for men. I was disappointed that these sandals I ordered for my wife showed up in narrow sizing, with no indication on the product page as to width. I am returning, as she needs regular size 40eu sandals. I would exchange, but REI does not carry the color she wants in "men's". REI customer service was great, so I'm just sharing here until they add width information to their product descriptions, so no one else has the same issue.

NARROW sizing

I hate to write a negative review but the narrow sizing is no joke. I was so excited to get these the color is beautiful. In my normal Birkenstock’s I keep them a little loose on the second buckle where these are tight and rub the side of my foot on the last buckle possible. The angle on the front of the shoe cuts it shorter by my toes as well which makes it look even worse. Please, spare yourself the disappointment.

Black color is not as-pictured, but a great shoe!

My black oiled leather Birkenstocks were not a dark shiny black as I expected. Someone else in the comments pointed out that the box said "waxy" and not "oiled." I looked on the Birkenstock website, and I think the issue is that REI has a picture of the "Amalfi Black" but actually carries "Black," which has a faded matte finish. I actually really like the color I got, but it did not mach the product picture. I am a size 8 and the 39 fits well. I can tell it will take a little time to break in the leather, but the soft footbed is really comfortable out of the box.

New shoe in a old crushed shoebox.

First Birkenstock. Shoe box arrives crushed and torn. Looked to be a return item. Shoes not worn but has a little stain on the heal area. It could be from the oil stain residue. Overall the shoe is comfy and the right size for me. I ordered wide.
