Great full size Camelback/Backpack
After comparing all the different Camelbacks out there I finally settled on this one. I was looking for a full size back pack/day pack that I could use for both biking and hiking. This one fit the bill perfectly especially for hiking where you need to be prepared to add/shed layers. The designers put a lot of thought into this and it seems like every time I use it I find new features like the built-in rain fly or the iPod/MP3 pocket at the top. Worth the money but as with all things, wait for a sale. :)
Nice pack, doesn't work well with thermal control
I live in the tropics and ride a dirtbike. Overall, this pack works well. I recently upgraded from the MULE. I like having the extra room and the overall design has improved since I purchased the MULE about 4 years ago. I purchased the CamelBak Antidote Thermal Control Kit to go with my HAWG. I was disappointed to find that I can barely get the mouth piece to fit through some of the openings and it will not fit through the loop at the top of the shoulder strap. Also, the clasp on the shoulder strap is too small for the insulated tube. If I was just going to use this pack "as is," I would give it 4-5 stars. But the failure of Camelbak to design their accessories to function well with their packs (or their packs to work with their accessories) is disappointing.
Great upgrade from 2012 version
I bought this bag as my work bag. I am an engineer and I use this for my daily commute which consists of public transit. I will almost never use the water bladder, so my review does not cover this. Once allergy season is over, I will be able to ride my bike part way to work. The pods that raise the pack off your back take a little getting use to. I needed to cinch the bag snug on my back and walk around for an hour to get use to them. The zippered pouches on the waist belt are a plus. I use them for holding a small kleenex pack and a spare GU pack. I wanted to buy last year's version, but I could not fit my bike helmet into the expandable external sleeve. This year's version solved that in two ways. First, there is an expansive sleeve that can easily fit a half shell helmet that is strap/clip adjusted. Second, if I use the sleeve to stuff my fleece jacket in, I can use the helmet strap clips. The only thing I wish they kept from last year's model is the zippered side pouches which are perfect for laptop power cords. As a bonus, inside the main compartment, there is sleeve with a cinch cord that my 15" laptop can fit into. In all, it's a great backpack. It is comfortable, expansive, and versitile.
Gave my sister my old HAWG and got the HAWG NV
I had given my HAWG to my sister who has used it for various local hiking trips and she loves the idea of the bladder to hold cold water. I've had my HAWG NV for 3 ears or so and I now use it for my commute to work. Can easily fit my work laptop and papers along with other personal stuff easily. For both my current hawg and the one I had before that is now w/my sister, they worked perfectly and have been on several winter ski trip out west (I am based in the Washington DC area).
Perfect bag for outside sports
Personally I use it for skateboarding but yes indeed great bag!
