Not great
It's not terrible but I don't love it. I did like it quite a bit despite the screen light that stays on... until the clear cover/stand broke off. I don't even know why, it was really just sitting on the window sill in my room. Anyway, it was never something I thought was fantastic. It has some features that I like well enough but it could be a lot better and the fact that it broke... well that's just annoying and disappointing. Only used it for about 6 months before that happened. I'm living in Taiwan and still using it since I don't have anything else. Haven't had the battery cover problem other users described.
Great clock
I use this clock at home and when I travel. Things that are great: the numbers are big, the alarm is reliable, it's easy to set, the light stays on when the alarm is set so I can check to see how much longer I get to sleep :)I like how the pastic stand closes over the front of the clock so if I don't have anywhere to stand the clock, I can still set my alarm and sleep with the clock under my pillow or in my sack without messing up the time etc.
Multiple Design Flaws
There are several design features that need improving. #1, the faceplate/stand broke off in short order, so now the clock will not stand up. #2, the lettering on the side that tells which position of the slider does what (time, alarm, etc), wore off quickly, so I have to guess what setting does what. #3, when closed, the faceplate can push buttons, reset the time (have pulled out of my suitcase more than once and had to reset it), and push the snooze button, which lights the backlight (which drains the battery). Overall, I am not impressed with the quality of this clock.
Great small, lightweight travel clock
Easy to use, loud enough but not TOO loud - backlight is convenient for glancing at clock half asleep in the middle of the night - stand doubles as screen cover when closed for storage or packed for travel. Nice compact size when folded and very lightweight. I would make it even smaller myself, but that's a preference rather than a design flaw. Glad REI had one of these and will continue to use it for any travel or hiking where my iPhone is not an ideal alarm clock!
Design flaws and poor quality
I used the travel alarm clock on various trips around Florida and Georgia. Exchanged the first one when one of the slide switches became unreliable. Returned the second one when the "10 minute" column digits stopped displaying part of the number, i.e. could not tell if the number was a zero, two, four, or five. I agree with the other reviewers negative comments about the light draining the battery when alarm mode is enabled. Plus the light makes it hard to sleep. Poor design. Poor quality.
What were they thinking?
This clock would be useful if it wasn't for one serious design flaw: the nightlight stays on when the alarm is set. It can't be turned off. So if you like to sleep in a dark room, you're out of luck. The nightlight also drains the batteries.
Good compact travel clock
This is 2nd model. Good traveling with and good night light to read time. Last model display went bad but REI replaced with no issues
Great clock
I bought this travel alarm for my guy for Xmas. It is the 4th such clock i've bought. This design is excellent, minimal look, big numbers, nice alarm sound. He loves it!
Great travel alarm.
I bought this travel clock/alarm as a backup to my watch alarm for use on a recent REI Adventures trip to Nepal. We stayed in tents so we had to rely on something with a battery. It worked perfectly and I now use it regularly for travel. What I like: -Large numbers that I can read without my glasses; -Loud enough alarm with a short snooze; -Backlight that is on only when the alarm is set. I like this because it extends battery life--important in the backcountry; -Can be used as a flashlight if necessary (switch on the back); -Has a stand so that the display can be viewed easily from a lying down position. :) Also, the stand folds over the front of the clock when not in use to protect the display screen. I had been concerned with the display being scratched because I carry the clock with other items in my backpack; however, as I discovered, the stand acts as the cover! What could be improved: -As others have stated, the setting switch on the side is not marked in an intuitive way so it takes a few uses to become familiar with it. I used the clock most recently on a visit to my mom's house and she liked it so much that I gave it to her and am now back here buying another one. :)
Practical
I got this for a trip to South Africa several years ago, and it worked great! I used it on/off as my alarm clock until a trip to Paris, which the plastic stand broke. I still used it without the stand, though annoying. It eventually died and couldn't be fixed. Overall practical and good bargain.
