Best Shorts I've Owned
These shorts are great...not perfect...but, great nonetheless. Here is what I like about them: Very comfortable, look nice, don't hold much water, dry quickly, breath well, have lots of pockets, light-weight. Here is what isn't so great: Built-in 'belt' uses plastic clasps that sometimes pop open on their own. This is definitely a design-flaw; however, I still give the shorts five stars because they are fantastic in every other way and because I always wear a normal belt with them anyway (luckily the shorts have normal belt loops in addition to the built-in belt.) If they fix the plastic clasps on future versions then I'll give them six stars. :)
Love these shorts
Couple of things. One reviewer wrote that he's got a 33" waist and both the Medium and Large sizes fit. I have the same size waist, and I tried a Large and found them to be too big around the waist. Too much bunched up material with the Large. REI gratefully took them back in exchange. I love everything about these shorts. I haven't had any issues with the pockets, the materials and workmanship are top notch. Especially love the snapped closure. Why don't more companies use this? My only complaint - when you button the inside stay behind the zipper, it makes it awfully hard to take a quick whiz. You have to totally unbutton them to go to the bathroom.
Great shorts - Advice for noisy zippers
I have one pair of these shorts and I think that they are great. I have not used them in wet conditions yet but the material and stiching are top notch. As some reviewers mentioned - the zipper pulls on the side pockets are noisy. I almost returned the shorts myself - but if you look carefully where the zipper closes there is a peice of fabric sewn into the shorts that covers the last 1/8 inch of the zipper. When you close the zipper simply align the zipper pull so that it is inline with the zipper and push it closed. The zipper pull tucks right into that peice of fabric and it holds them in place so they do not make any noise at all. Trust me - I was annoyed at the noise as well so I spent some time examining the shorts because I really wanted to keep them. I hope this tip helps some of you out.
Virtually Indestructible
I call these "virtually" indestructible because after three years of almost continuous use, these are still my go-to shorts. I've owned two pair, and frequently wear them for up to a week before they show any dirt at all. The material never wrinkles and looks good even after fished out of a laundry bin. They are made of a neat combination of superstrong but light and supple cotton that has a "rip-stop" feel to it, but still very comfortable and soft after a couple washings. The style has an 'alpine' vibe that looks good in the bars, too. The back of one pair finally began to show fading after days of sitting on rotten granite, and the other pair has a small tear in a pocket, but amazingly no other marks or scratches in the material after the use I just described. I have two fresh pair still in the pack for the next three years.
Great shorts but size a little off
I ordered these shorts because I have the similar version of the Kuhl pants and I love them - looks great and they are tough and very lightweight and comfortable. My only beef with the shorts is that they were surprising small in the waist. I had to return the L for an XL even though I am an L in about all other shorts at a 35 waist. Otherwise these are great shorts.
Kwestionable Konstruction
These shorts are bullet-proof and stylish but... the mesh pockets are terrible and get blown-out over and over again. I wish they would replace the mesh in the front pockets with some of their regular material and just add some eyelets for water-drainage. Also not the quickest-drying shorts, but that is acceptable given the durability of the material. I would have purchased the zip-off Guide Pants but they have the same terrible design flaw. Still, if you don't mind having to sew the pockets up every couple of weeks, they are four-stars on all other counts.
OK, but...
The waist size is true, again wear a 33 (and like them a little loose) and the medium is right on. My first impression after receiving the shorts was that they are very much "slimmer" than I had anticipated. I love a long short and these are long, but the design is off. By this I mean the legs are long, lots of inseam, and the crotch is short which is a real inconvenience if you wear boxers and/or enjoy your freedom.
Great shorts
Excellent outdoor shorts. They look great, fit well and have plenty of well designed pockets. The material is fantastic, looks washed but wears and dries well. Only complaint is the zipper pulls are noisy so you jingle while you walk. I took them off and added my own nylon pull tabs. Also they're a little pricey for shorts but worth it over similarly priced shorts.
Great shorts, and no more Jingly zippers
I experienced the same thing as a couple other reviewers - the jingle jangle from the zipper pulls hitting the zipper when I walked. It didn't bother me, but I did notice it. Then I realized that there's a tiny pocket on the zipper that you can tuck the pull into and, voila, no more jingles! The photo on the product page doesn't show the little pocket near the zipper, but it is there. Maybe it was new for this year's version or something....who knows! Anyway, these shorts are comfortable and lightweight, one of my new faves for wearing in the desert heat. They are very well made and I expect them to last. I have a 32 waist and the medium fit perfectly, and I like the longer inseam for my twig-like legs. I'd also recommend the Columbia Omni-dri shorts as they are excellent in the heat, too.
Top Notch for Travel
I bought a pair of these shorts one year ago this month for a 2 month trip to Thailand. I wore these shorts EVERY day the first 3 weeks, no joke. Since then, I've continued to wear these shorts on a regular basis. I've never had a problem with the mesh pockets as another user commented - however, I wouldn't carry my leatherman in there (it is mesh and common sense says so). The cargo pockets and other utility pockets are handy and versatile. I bought my second pair of these shorts now that the summer season attire is out.
