Bike storage, no holes needed
I bought the gravity stand to store two bicycles in my one-bedroom apartment. I was hoping the price would be better, but from other stands I checked I found this one to look better. It was easy to assemble and it's holding the bikes well. It's certainly not easy to tip the stand over, but I wouldn't recommend it to be used with small children around. An earthquake-type strap was provided but since the idea is not drilling holes in the wall, I'm not installing it.
Easy setup, does what it's supposed to
When I became the owner of two bikes, I needed a better way to store them other than leaning them against the wall by the door to my one-bedroom condo. This cleans up the area well and leaves space for welcoming guests, saying goodbye, etc. Pros: -VERY easy and quick to put together. I put it together in less time than it took a pot of rice to cook. -Looks clean. Other than the red color of the hooks themselves, nothing about the rack really stands out or intrudes into the "vibe" of your room (which is awesome, since it's right in my living room). -Extra smaller hooks are great for storing helmet, lock, etc. -It works (mostly, see cons). Cons: -Really, I've only found one so far: My 1980s steel-framed Ross road bike weighs about 31 pounds, so I put it on the bottom hooks. My brand-new 20-pound Scott road bike went up top. The Scott is hanging neat and tight, but the Ross has inched toward the ground, to the point where the back wheel basically rests on the ground. It doesn't bother me too much, though, because I didn't necessarily buy the rack to get them completely off the ground, just to organize them. If the bike on top sunk down, that would be a big problem, but it doesn't. I guess my bottom line is this: If you want to store two 30-pound (or more) bikes, be careful about putting one up top. It might not hold. You could easily work up something to keep the red hooks from sliding down, but it's a bummer that it doesn't just WORK as-is. Fortunately, this rack does work for me and the bikes I have right now.
Perfect for an apartment
This bike stand really saved my life. My wife and I live in a one bedroom apartment and didn't have space for two mountain bikes. We saw this at REI and gave it a shot. Super glad we did! It actually looks quite nice. It's a quick and easy setup. Overall a 5 star product!
Convenience with a cost
As advertised, this product is simple to put together, elementary to put in place, and can hang two bikes in minutes. That being said, the thin rubber sheath around the hooks will wear out within a month (I rewrapped mine in electric tape), and the slightest transgression when removing or installing a bike will send the hook arms cascading down the frame, which will drive you to madness. The plastic stud at the top that is the contact point between the rack and the wall is just sticky enough that it will eventually pull the paint off the wall where it makes contact, leaving a dime-sized bare spot
Simple, works as advertised, quality may vary
The finish of the tubing is very nice, however the tension hooks tend to mar it even with the rubber covers supplied. Pressing them in place tears right through these protectors. Also, on the rack I received the predrilled holes did not line up well, making it impossible for one person to assemble. I needed a second to basically twist and hold the tubes in place while I screwed it together. It is otherwise extremely simple to assemble. Mine is also noticeably out of true and does not sit square to the wall. It seems to stand just fine however, still I would expect something that depends on balance to stand to hold to a tighter tolerance. Otherwise it works very well.
Good but...
This is actually a nice, inexpensive and stylish way to display your bikes. There is a recommendation in the instructions to secure the rack to the wall with a screw, and I probably would have done that but... My 29er and my road bike would not fit vertically very well. If I wanted to remove the lower bike, it seemed I always had to remove my upper bike. I think it's just that the 29er is a bit big... the handle bars also rub the wall if not careful. The rubbing is not an issue with my road bike. None of this is a complaint and what I can't tell you for sure is if another 84" tall rack would have the same issue. The curve at the top of this one probably restricts the true useable height from 84" to 80". If you don't have a 29er and a 56.5" or taller road bike, this may work fine. Someone else may say they don't have an issue, just giving you a heads-up.
Perfect for an apartment
I recently just moved to Oregon where bike commuting is now a big part of my life. Before now I never really used my bike, but now I needed something to store it in my one bedroom so I could effectively get in and out for work and errands without having to move furniture or stumble around obstacles. This bike rack was everything I needed and more. It is perfect for two bikes and takes up minimal space in my dining room. It goes together in less than 10 minutes and supports both bikes with no problem. Great investment, well worth the money...
Nice Rack
I've only had it up for two days, but so far, so good. I was able to get this thing assembled and ready to go in 20 minutes. I hang one small road bike on the bottom hooks, my helmet and keys on the accessory hooks, and my two panniers on the top hooks. Keeps it all up off the floor so nobody trips over my things. Sure, it's kinda ugly, but so was every other bike rack I looked at. I love that I don't have to permanently mount anything to the wall and the rubber feet don't scratch my floors. Wish I'd bought it years ago!
does the trick for easy garage storage
Works great for hanging bikes in garage so I could park in it. I'm a renter so I'm glad that there's no drilling or the like to lose my deposit on. However, the top leans forward if not positioned perfectly, and the bikes can be difficult to maneuver for easy access. Holds my stuff, but I don't know if it would work inside the apartment too well. I could see a kid bumping it and causing a pile of broken arms and bike parts. For what it is, it should be cheaper (maybe 1/2 the cost?).
Storage made easy and clean
We have bought two of these storage racks and so far they have worked great. Instructions were simple to follow and putting the rack together was easy. So easy that my three year old helped with me putting the second rack together. The racks are currently set up with a hybrid and a mtb on the bottom and road bikes on the top. The accessary hooks are great for helmets, but they do slide down a bit. The bike hooks fit snugly in place and added security with the rubber o-ring. I would definitely recommend using the safety strap. These racks have made storing our bikes worry free.
