I bought these boots two days before heading into Rocky Mountain National Park. I wore them for a 3 mile test hike before hitting the real trails and was shocked that my feet were so happy. They did great on pavement, great on hard trail, and amazing on rough terrain trails. I put about 20 miles into these beauts in the first week of owning them without a single blister, sore arch, or wet sock. They are clearly not a waterproof boot, but puddles were no problem. I was even surprised when I accidentally stomped into a shallow stream and my socks didn't show proof. Great boot, great price! I love Merrell's and again I am not disappointed.
I've had the high version for several years. They required no breaking in, and I have a hard to fit foot and rarely find the "just right" shoe. I have the low version now that I wear regularly as well. I do a lot of hiking and also a lot of sports photography. These are great for providing support, though they are quite lightweight and extremely comfortable. I've hiked in Hawaii with them, over seriously sharp "a'a" lava, with no problem. I've trashed the toes a bit between the sharp lava and the sports photos, but they are still 99% fully functional. Love 'em to death.
These boots are wonderful and true to size. Comfort with excellent support. Fractured my ankle last year and it gets really stressed on hikes. These along with my trek poles added a great deal of support. Order a pair- you wont be dissapointed ladies!
I bought these to backpack Aravaipa Creek Wilderness in southeastern Arizona. One's feet are in the creek 80% of the time when hiking this trail, so it is important to have water flow through the boots, but to keep out stones and gravel. I wear them with gaiters (to prevent stones/gravel from entering through the top of the boots) and they were fantastic. Highly recommended. By one half to one size up, as they run small. I bought a 9 and I usually wear size 8-8.5. These boots are good for dayhikes, too, on trails that are not overly rough and rocky.
I purchased these boots at REI. I have a wide foot so my selection was slim but fortunately these boots are great. For a wide foot they are comfy. I've used them for major hikes on rough terrain and thru creeks. I was very surprised at how quickly they dry out. I was really concerned after having to cross a creek that was knee high and I still had several miles to go. But after a short distance out of the water they were dry and comfortable. No blisters. I would buy these boots again.
There are not many boots that fit my high arch, high instep and wide foot. This is perfect! I was pleased at the policy of ordering on-line and having them shipped free to a store near me where I could try them on and return them if they didn't fit. I was ecstatic when I found they fit perfectly! I have used them several times already and have had no blisters from first use! [...]
I just returned from hiking in Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyons (easy to moderate). These boots were so comfortable, airy, light and gripped uneven surfaces very well. Buy 1/2 size larger than you usually take. Great boot!
The REI salesperson was really helpful in fitting these boots: she pointed out that even though the first pair I tried on seemed to fit, there was really not much room beyond my toes. So I took the next size up, and I wore them in the 100-plus degree heat in Cambodia with merino socks and liners, and they felt great and provided great ankle support. They also were reasonably priced.
I’ve been using the Moab hiker for about one year and have found them to be great hiking on moderate trails without much downhill hiking. They have good traction, the soles are stiff enough for rock hopping and are terrific in warm, dry weather. However, I just came back from hiking the Kalalau trail on Kauai, Hawaii wearing the Moab boot which I thought would be perfect for the weather there. I hiked 13 miles roundtrip on rocky, steep up and down terrain for most of the trail. By the end of the hike, my toes were injured, the toenails on both my big toes were separated from the nail bed and another toenail is totally black and blue. I read the reviews of others that have injured their toes wearing these hiking shoes and I have to concur. These boots are not made for hiking trails with a lot of rocky, downhill terrain.
I really like this boot. The only negative for me was that the ankle support came up too high in the back and irritated my achilles tendon. To fix that, I leave the top laces untied so it's looser. Other than that, it got me through some back country hiking in Alaska! I recommend it for those who want a breathable boot and don't need it to be waterproof.
