Expertise for great choices @ REI Milford
I am so happy Mr Ray at tge shop recommended this sturdy yet light piece of hardware for my new CANNONDALE. She not only looks good but rides comfortably well with the extra pockets bag I just added for long trips . I love & appreciate the expertise of Ms Lori and Steve @ REI Milford .🙏🏼🌈💙
Does what its supposed to do
Bought this originally as my vintage Stumpjumper did not have mounting points for a rack. It has since found its way on to a Bianchi mountain bike and I like it on there. I don't use the optional slide on luggage, I basically use it to carry my u-lock, extra clothes and occasionally stuff from the store, all held on it via bungee cord. The bike and rack go everywhere, everyday, on and off road, through sun, rain and snow. Mounting is simple and secure.Installed properly it does not move, ever, on the seatpost no matter where my bike goes. I have the v type and it also doubles as a good rear fender. My only concern with it is that its easy to steal, for a while I had it cabled and locked to my frame for protection. Now I just live dangerously.
Very functional
Pleasantly surprised how well this rack mounts to my bike given the simple, single point of attachment. It's super easy to attach so I never have to hesitate about using it. There is no movement at all and though I've only put about 5lbs. on this rack I have no doubt that it can hold 20lbs. with no problem. I use it on my road bike for longer trips to carry extra tubes, jacket, snacks, etc. I put everything in a small backpack and strap it down with the built in bungee cords. It may not look the most streamlined but it sure is a lot more comfortable than wearing that backpack. I'll eventually pick up a trunk bag for it so my stuff is a little easier to access.
Great for lightweight camping gear
Bought for some bike packing, happy with purchase. I did not want to buy a whole bunch of new gear in order to go bike packing (racks, panniers, fenders, assorted bags, etc...) and hoped this would do nicely as it is basically set up like a saddle bag, I was not disappointed. Pros: Quickly detachable from bike, Stiff -Does not swing, Multiple options to attach cargo, allows for BYO Bags (don't need to purchase theirs) Cons: Fairly heavy, Rear light mount sucks
Rubs against thighs and swings on turns.
I bought the Explorer cargo rack but it just made my lean bike look so fat on the back. Then I saw this in store and grabbed it. It looks so much nicer. The only reason to get this instead of the rack is vanity, and I'm vane. The REI clerk warned me, "it swings." Yes, it does. It fishtails. But what's most annoying to me is my thighs hit the clamp. I figured other people had this issue, but I guess it's just me. I haven't been biking long, my thighs aren't thick. But there's a constant rub.
Good for a while.
I used the product about twice a week for my ride to and from work. Roughly 40 miles round trip. I never filled it to capacity (20 lbs) but after about 3 years of use (maybe 100 times out), I notice a huge crack through the head. It was never real easy to get the rack on the bike properly to stay in place and many times I noticed it was rubbing the tire. Best I can figure at this time is that the rack was not made to take the punishment of potholes and other bumps with a load on it. If you get this one, use is only for light loads, especially if the routes you go have bumps in them.
Great on gravel
Bought two of these for a ride on the Great Allegheny Passage. Strapped a medium dry bag and a pair of shoes to it and worked great for the length of the trip (150 miles). We only needed to carry some extra clothes since we stayed in B & B's along the way. Worked very well.
Good rack, taillight mount is a joke
The rack is as good as any seatpost mount rack is going to get. Fine for strapping a pair of shoes or a bike lock. Would not consider anything over the 20 lb max. Major weakness is the tail light mount (redlite mount). This is for clip on style rear tail lights. My tail light stayed on a day before the Topeak supplied mount broke costing my one ~ [$] LED tail light. Topeak needs to either fix this or drop the mount from the package. You would be better off attaching your light with a piece of bubble gum.
Quick Easy... a little heavy
I originally got this rack for use commuting on fire road too and from UC santa cruz on my mountain bike. I would highly recommend the topeak rack, and bag system to anyone who is commuting. They easily, securely and quickly clip together and I never worried about it on slightly rough trails. It gets the weight off your back, which allows you to ride, sweet, and forget about it. Because there is a slide and clip system it works well for just taking cloths and lunch, or placing books, and running shoes in the fold up panniers. While it does add some weight to your bike, (I now live in chicago and it is very noticeable on my road bike), I still move faster with the weight off my back when I can just think about pushing and not a shifting bag. tristan
Nice Rack!
I don't normally write reviews but the other reviews written for this product almost scared me away. I'm glad they didn't. After going for it anyway, I am totally happy with this rack (and the Topeak bag). I own a mountain bike and commute to work. I love the quick-release option. It allows me to commute to work and with little effort I'm in the mountains on weekends. They say it slips. All I did was get rid of the extra grease on my seat post and used a little muscle to secure it down. It does not slip on me at all! Let me repeat, it DOESN'T slip! Also I was worried it wouldn't fit my seat post but it truly is a one-size fits all. The shims that come with it are awesome! You should buy the additional guards if you want a regular panier. This rack is awesome for that quick commute to work. I would definitely recommend it to anyone.
