Sizing Notes
Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

Great, breathable running shorts
I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. These are my go to shorts! I now have four pairs - two black, blue (pictured) and green. They have a small interior pocket on the right side of the build in panties. They also have a zipper pocket across the back that I use for lip balm and snacks/gels. I use them for road & trail running, bootcamp classes and casually in a summer day. They are the perfect length! I am in my 40s and haven’t worn shorts in over a decade and wear them all the time. I am sure I will add to my my collection as they release new colors fairly often.
THESE ARE UPDATED/DIFFERENT
Definitely be warned that these aren't the same as the older version, which I loved. I wish REI would indicate when something is updated. Most notable changes for me are the higher waistband (not necessary, not more flattering, and stiffer/harder to get on), and the material (all of it feels a bit less breathable, less soft, and a bit heavier). Overall a downgrade from the shorts I really loved, they still work well enough but it's a disappointment.
Lightweight running short
These shorts arrived and I was very impressed with how light and durable the material felt. As a tall person with short legs and a long torso, I will say they are a bit high-waisted for my body. A lower rise definitely tends to be more comfortable on trail. That said, I absolutely love the color and the fabric. On the trail, they are so lightweight and airy, it feels like they are barely there. Pros: The color is great and I love the added reflective accents for visibility. The lining also makes them quite comfortable to wear. The length is also great. Cons: I would much prefer a side zip pocket to a back zip pocket for accessibility on the move. Again, it’s a personal preference for my body type, but a lower rise would make these perfect. Overall, these are a great, lightweight short, great for long runs!
They get the job done
I’ll start with what I didn’t like…. These were incredibly unflattering. I typically wear an XL. These look like I’m wearing a XXL. Very baggy and the space from the crotch to the top is like a mile long. They also seem to eternally look wrinkled. That being said looking my best while exercising isn’t a top priority. The material is very breathable and the liner is pleasant. These shorts have cute little reflective details and many pockets. There’s a small one in the liner and then three on the back waist band. One of the smaller waistband pockets has a clip which is great! Now I know not that many people have giant keys like this anymore, but I will say that my key is a tight fit and lucky for the clip because it wants to shimmy right out of the pocket. The zippered pocket ACTUALLY fits my phone, which is nice. None of my lady pants pockets ever actually hold these giant iPhones they make now. In conclusion, I am not winning a cutie contest in these, but at least I am comfortable and I have pockets for every thing I need.
Cute and super comfy!
While I have no experience with the previous model that many loved, these as they are now (July 2025) are a great pair of shorts! A size small fits me great and I think is flattering as it drapes nicely down the back and lies smooth in the front (hip = 38", waist = 29", 5'4" height). They feel very airy, light, and breathable. I agree that the waist is higher than most running shorts, but I think that makes it pair better with a crop top or sport bra than hip-height shorts. I wear lots of shorter tops so I love how this looks with those. If wearing a normal length t-shirt, I like REI's Active Pursuits 4.5" shorts for a lower fit on my hips (size XS). I also agree the waistband took a little getting used to since it's tight around the hips when I pull them on but am glad it's snug since it improves the fit around the waist
Comfy and breezy
They are incredibly breezy and comfortable, perfect for keeping cool during the runs, don’t feel restrictive at all. They are high waisted which is really flattering and add coverage. Highly recommended!
Great running shorts feel like there barely there
I got these and wasn't sure about them, having switched to running mostly in leggings years ago... BUT these brought me back to shorts! - They're so light it feels like wearing almost nothing, the material breathes, dries fast, and is stretchy, and there has been very little sticking or bunching while I run. - The high rise is indeed high, about halfway between my belly button and bra line, which makes them feel secure - so no slipping down my hips OR riding up to my waist. The high rise is great for wearing with just a sports bra or a cropped top, but feels funny with a full length shirt. - The leg cut is shorter on the outside for a more flattering look but still long enough in the inner thighs to limit chafing. - The large fits true for a 10-12 pant size and the color is a nice dusky marine blue. - The zippered pocket on the back waistband is bigger than I expected, it'll fit a phone or small wallet or some snacks for longer runs (but is awkward to get in and out of so not good if you want to look at your phone throughout the run), and theres a smaller pocket that seems made for a key. Overall I'd like to give this 4.5 stars, deducting only because I keep reaching for a side pocket that doesn't exist. That said, I think these shorts do what they sets out to do very well and Ive enjoyed running in them as it gets warmer out and will keep doing so!
TERRIBLE
These are VERY disappointing. The new design is sadly a huge downgrade from last years. I LOVE my pair from last year and was excited to get another. I order the same size-Medium. Im short 5'2" with muscular leg and find it hard to get a good pair of shorts that are breathable and comfortable enough to workout in or wear all day. Last years pair were comfortable and had a stretchy waist. This year they are SIGNIFICANTLY smaller in the waist and not stretchy AT ALL. If it wouldnt cost me money t return them i would. As it is I will NEVER purchase from REI again as there is no notice that styles/designed have been updated/changed.
New design is a waste of money!
These do not fit like the original. They fit Absolutely horribly! They have a high waist now, like ridiculously high and small waist and I have a long thin torso! The new design is just not up to par with what the old one was. I could tell instantly if I went hiking or running in these I would be chafing all over! I really hope they bring the old design back! The waist fabric is also not as good as it use to be . I would not recommend these to anybody. I very seldom write a bad review, it says a lot that I felt like writing this one!
Beyond tragic re-design! Pls bring back old style!
So glad I read reviews and tried on in store. These will fit few people properly and are not flattering. The new waistband is made from the breathable shorts material- not the slimming spandex of years past. The cut is baggy beyond all belief. If you are slightly curvy, the waistband will gap in the back. I tried to size down to fix the waistband problem and I can barely get the shorts over my hips. True to size but way too much material in the thighs and unflattering waistband. These will fit someone with a boyish figure and thick thighs. If you are a lean distance runner with lean thighs and have a little bit of curves, you will be happier with the old style. I ended up buying a used pair from May 2024 in the pre-owned section of the store. Yes. It’s that bad. Sorry. Not all change is good.
