Good, but not great

I really wanted to love this shirt as I have several other MH shirts and they are absolutely fantastic, specifically the Crater Lake Hoodie. The couple issues I have may very well be specific to my liking, so please consider that. LIKES - The zippers are good quality and I dig the packable stow pocket. I also like how the shirt looks, for the most part. DISLIKES FABRIC - This fabric is OK, not my favorite. For some reason it feels rough on my skin when I wear it without an undershirt which is how this should is meant to be worn. I took it on a couple mile hike and it performed well but I just didn't love how it felt. FIT - The fit is not great. I am 6'1" and when I stretch my arms out the shirt rides up my arms, which is a bit of a pet peve of mine (see picture) - It also has NO FINGER HOLES which is just kind of crazy to me in a hiking shirt. Overall this is a shirt I will probably reserve for days sitting at my desk working with an undershirt on which is a disappointing place to be for a hiking shirt. If none of these things would bother you, you will most likely be just fine with this thing. It's just not for me.

Great sun hoody

Versatile sun hoody for mountain biking, hiking, etc. Solid for temperature regulation with the ability to put the hood under a helmet and the half zip. The material is breathable yet is still a good layer for light wind. Compared to a couple other sun hoodies I own, the material of this sun hoody doesn't feel quite as soft or breathable, but not significantly. I think that is due to the higher elastane content. The other comparison to note is that one of the sun hoodies I own has longer sleeves, but the sleeve length of this one is in line with the other one I own. Personally I prefer longer sleeves, but these are not noticeably short. Doesn't retain odor and the material is durable so far.

Light, Versatile, But Sleeves Are Oddly Too Short

I've worn this sun hoody (size medium) several times on neighborhood walks, a few day hikes, and on multiple 2+ hour gravel bike rides on sunny, dry days (temps 50-65 F). For reference, I'm 6'2" 190lbs, 31-inch waist, 40-inch chest, with a longer than average torso and arms (in sleeves, I generally prefer 33/34" length). The size medium fits me perfectly except for the sleeve length, which is several inches too short, leaving part of both arms/wrists exposed without any sun protection. It's an odd design choice given the main purpose of the hoody in my mind is to provide sun protection, thus the reason I've given the hoody 4 out of 5 stars. If you're familiar with the Mountain Hardwear Crater Lake Hoody, the material is similar to the touch and weight if not identical, but the sleeves on this hoody are noticeably shorter. I own several Crater Lake Hoody's (all size medium) and have never had issues with the sleeves being too short, unlike this hoody, which, according to Mountain Hardwear's sizing charts, list identical measurements/dimensions. The material breathes very, very well, is lightweight (5.9 oz on my gear scale), is soft against the skin, and provides plenty of sun protection with a 50 UPF rating (no sun burns after several hours in direct sun). After wearing the hoody a few times on sweaty gravel bike rides without washing it, the odor was much less than I expected, slightly less odor/funk than the Crater Lake Hoody when I've worn them for several days at a time on various outdoor trips bikepacking and backpacking. This hoody also dries quickly after washing (air dry) and hasn't shown any durability issues. The hoody has several useful features, including a scuba style hood that can be worn under a bike or other helmet, soft material around the zipper to prevent skin irritation/chaffing, an internal pocket with a carabiner/gear loop at the bottom left hem for stowing the hoody in a pack, frame bag, etc., and a large, secure zip pocket on the left chest that easily holds snacks, a wallet, or phone if needed. The elastic binding at the neck, cuffs, and hem also keeps the hoody in place when it's windy. This hoody also works well as a light and breathable layer if needed. On a few evening gravel bike rides when the temps started to drop below 50F, I wore a synthetic t-shirt under this hoody and stayed sufficiently warm with minimum saturation from sweat at the end of my rides. What could be improved? If Mountain Hardwear increased the sleeve length on this hoody to match that of the Crater Lake Hoody, it would be far more functional for providing sun coverage and protection and would likely become my go-to sun hoody for a variety of outdoor activities.

Multi Season Magic Fabric

This lightweight layer proved its mettle on a hike where temperatures careened from 35°F to 75°F. It kept me comfortable through it all – a temperature range I'd usually tackle with two heavier layers. Not anymore! The fabric is the star. It breathes, moves, and performs flawlessly. It retains heat when needed, dumps it when it doesn't, cuts through moderate wind, and moves with me whether the hood's up or down. A note on fit: it's slimmer than expected. I sized up to a large (normally a medium) over my fitted small shirt. The cut is tailored through the torso and head, with a bit more room below. The fit at the top is backpack-friendly. Size up – you won't regret it. The design includes Mountain Hardwear's standard small chest pocket (phone-unfriendly), but the interior stash pocket (lower right) is a game-changer. It handily fits a phone and doubles as a pack bag – smaller than a 16oz can. Pockets loaded, it balances well. I'm a sucker for a ¾ zip, and this one delivers, zipping right to the chin. The fabric is thin enough to let the sun's warmth in while offering dermatologist-approved SPF protection. My only wish? A zippered waist-level tunnel pocket for a larger stash and hand warmth, without adding bulk. This sun shield has blown me away with its versatility. It's so effective across conditions that it's replaced my need for heavier layers.

Light jacket, heavy use!

I’m absolutely thrilled with this little jacket! I find myself grabbing it every time I head out for a run or hike in cooler weather. Since it packs down to about the size of two Clif bars, there’s really no reason not to bring it along. It’s kept me dry during light rain and always feels warmer than expected while still breathing really well when the day heats up.

Wish I had 4 more of this hoody

This hoody is amazing! It is lightweight and very comfortable. I am in TX and I have been wearing Sunshield Hoody every time I do any yardwork or outside for any extended period of time. I haven't been hiking with it yet but I have no doubt it will be just as comfortable. Mountain Hardwear knocked it out of the park with this one. The material is very soft, breathable during the very hot days. Has outstanding UV protection. I love the actual hood. I have plenty of long sleeve outdoor shirts but my neck always gets burned by the sun. With this hoody I don't have to worry about it. It fits just like it describes. It's form fitting for me but not suffocating. Sweating in it just keeps you even cooler with this material. I am 6'5" 260 #. I got a XXL and it fits perfectly.

No thumbholes!

I received these products for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I'm about 6'9 and 260, and I went with an XXL. Initial thoughts: There are a lot of things to like about this sun shirt. It breathes fairly well, it's very lightweight, and the nice deep chest zipper allows you to adjust how you wear it. The hood is quite big. I wore this out doing yardwork on a sunny day with a ballcap on and the hood kept the sun off my ears and my neck. Chest pocket seems a little unnecessary to me, but probably a nice feature for some folks. The fit is loose and airy and I didn't overheat. I found the XXL to be a slightly too baggy for my taste, and I would imagine the XL would have fit my torso a little better while still maintaining a good fit. However, being a tall guy, the biggest issue I had with this shirt is the sleeve length. The sleeves on the XXL are fine when my arms hang down at my side. However, because of the loose fit of the garment, whenever I bend my arms the sleeves ride way up on my forearms, which kind of defeats the purpose of a long sleeved sun shirt. I think this design could be greatly improved by adding thumbholes to the sleeves. The fabric is stretchy, and thumbholes would allow the sleeves to stay in place during activities such as biking, paddling, fishing, etc. If you've got short arms, this might not be an issue for you! However, for me this is a bit of a dealbreaker. I appreciate REI sending this to me to sample, but if I had paid for this shirt, I'd be returning it.

Versatile sun protection

Thoroughly impressed by this sun hoody. The material is cooling to the touch yet provides warmth as well. I took this through the ringer with some crazy Texas weather. Day started in the 40s and ended in the low 90s. Not only was I warm in the morning, but the afternoon heat was easily handled. Quick drying and feels great. It runs a little small...for reference I am 6'0" and 180 pounds. I typically wear a large but the extra large fits perfect. Sun hoodies are my favorite piece of equipment for climbing as well and this is top notch. Well done!

Solid light sun hoodie!

I spend a lot of time outdoors in the southwestern US and have gone to really enjoy longsleeve sunshirts. The Sunshield hoodie performs as sort of blend between a sunshirt and super lightweight jacket. I had it on the beach last weekend and it stood up well to light rain and wind. It's also been useful in the mointains in CO as it can get very sunny, but still chilly. It packs down to almost nothing. I'd recommend the Sunshield hoodie.

Men’s Sunshield Hoody

This is one of the best lightweight sun protection layers on the market. Quality is superb and the fit is spot. I’m 5’10” 180 and medium is perfect. Athletic fit. Not baggy but not tight. Material is the perfect weight. Many sun layers are too thin and feel insignificant. The sunshield isn’t thick by any means but the material is more substantial and will be more durable over time. 4 stars because this does NOT have thumb loops as advertised in the product photos. I thought maybe the first one I bought was a fluke but the second one was missing the thumb loops as well.
