Perfect shorts for every adventure!

These shorts are great! I'm very happy with them. They’re made from a lightweight blend of recycled nylon and polyester, which dries quickly and is easy to machine wash and dry. The length is just right, and I LOVE the high waist. The included belt is stylish and easy to adjust. I also appreciate the thoughtful design of the pockets—mesh linings help with breathability in hot weather, and the two zippered pockets give me peace of mind, so I never worry about losing my belongings. The front pockets are also impressively deep, easily fitting a large phone. I think this color would flatter a variety of skin tones. Living in Chicago, I’ve worn these shorts around the house, for workouts, and while walking through the city. As the weather warms up, they’ll be my go-to for hiking, kayaking, and any outdoor activity all summer long! I received these shorts for free through the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review.

It's very comfortable and has secured pockets

This ended up being too large for me so I gave it to my aunt who absolutely loves it. She said it's very comfortable for casual hikes and the zippered pockets are of adequate depth and very functional.

pretty average

I unexpectedly received this product to review; unfortunately, since I didn't choose the product the size is about 3x too big for me. I nonetheless thoroughly examined it through a lens of utility, as well as fashion and quality. While I was unable to wear them properly, I could say that they seem comfortable except the redundancy of the elastic waistband coupled with a belt. In my opinion, the belt is an unnecessary addition that 1) doesn't look good (especially considering the brown pattern on it) and 2) could cause problems (I have had clothing similar to this where the belt, during washes, retreats into the built in band and is nearly, if not fully, impossible to re-thread). The material seems to be durable and while a bit stiff, does feel nice on the skin. I would have concern for the longevity of the shorts, not only due to the belt, but because of the amount of stitching. The side pockets are extremely deep and the necessary stitching is visible, so was made to look somewhat decorative. I can see already where the stitching is fraying and I haven't even washed them; it is my opinion that through frequent wear and washing the stitching may not hold up well. The number of pockets is appropriate, but the sizing of them is odd. The side pockets, as I mentioned before, are really deep - top all the way to the bottom of the shorts. This seems unnecessary and ultimately annoying/uncomfortable should there be anything in them. However, given the cut of the opening it's likely better they be so deep or there is the potential to lose contents, especially when sitting. The bottom front pocket seems particularly small, but would function well for storage of a key or something like that; though, due to its positioning, I wouldn't put anything but one key in it. It does have a zipper, so that seems an appropriate use. The back pocket is an appropriate size and also has a zipper, which is always nice. As far as style, aside from the belt, it’s hard to say how I feel about the cut because they are so oversized for me, but I feel like they fan out a bit too much at the bottom and would look better if they were straight cut. I also don’t prefer the amount of stitching, not only for potential issues, but because it makes the shorts look really busy, especially considering the belt pattern and the ties on the zippers. There just seems to be a lot going on that doesn’t need to be. That is, of course, my personal opinion and some people may really like the look of all that. Overall, I think the product is pretty average. I believe that if I were to come across the shorts on a rack while shopping the color would catch my eye (it’s a great color in my opinion – especially for being outdoors, dark enough to conceal a little dirt, but not so dark as to show a lot of dust). Aside from the color, I could imagine maybe being interested in trying them on, but for the price point I would pass.

Comfy, sporty shorts but ill-proportioned fit

I don't typically shop for bottoms from this brand because, though their apparel is great quality, the sizing and fit is usually off for me. I'm a standard S or sizes 2 or 4 in most bottoms but MH has always been way off when it comes to waist size compared to hip and leg size. These shorts fit so well once on but getting them on/off is annoying because they're max stretch over the hips. It's more like an XS waist band on a S hip/leg size. I've recently worn them to climb indoors, walk, hike, and drive and I genuinely love them. I think the belt is a really handy addition. There are 2 basic front hip pockets and a zip pocket on the left below the hip pocket as well as a zip pocket on the rear. I would buy another pair even knowing the sizing is awkward.

Great for hiking!

These shorts are so comfy! I love that there is a zipper pocket in the front - which is great for my keys - and another zipper pocket in the back. Neither of them fit my phone, but the standard pockets do, which works great. And the standard pockets on either size are HUGE and deep, so they feel secure for my phone! I could fit several phones in there if I wanted to. The fabric feels both comfy and strong. And the belt feature is great. It took me a tiny bit to get used to how it closes, but once I figured out how to use it it was a breeze. I look forward to hiking, kayaking, and gardening in these shorts on sunny days this spring, summer, and fall!

Comfy shorts

Wore these on a few hikes. They are very comfortable and lightweight. On one hike, it started raining and these short repelled water really well. I also really like the zippered pockets. They do seem to stay wrinkled which is really the only negative thing I have to say about them.

Pocket perfection, but fickle fit

Seriously, the pockets are amazing! Super deep, plus a little one for your stuff that gets easily lost — like chapstick or earbuds. The color's cute, and they fit true to size. The material's thin and comfy, good for hikes and bouldering, but, yeah, my thighs eat them a bit. The belt's kinda short, like usual for this brand. They'd be great for kayaking or anything around water. Basically, if you want awesome pockets and don't mind a little thigh action, they're solid. I think they’d fit me better if they were a tad longer and the legs weren’t quite as wide, but YRMV.

Slightly odd fit but otherwise great

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. Unfortunately I requested a size too large for me– it would almost be okay because the waist belt is adjustable but the area around my butt feels too baggy to be comfortable. It does seem like the waist is relatively small compared to the butt/thigh, but I think a medium would fit me better. Otherwise I love the material, color, and functionality, so I will be purchasing a pair that fit me correctly!

Sturdy & reliable adventure shorts

Recently went on a trip to Sedona where I put these shorts to the test on both the hiking and mountain biking trails. They were perfect for hiking in the warm weather. I really loved the adjustable belt. The belt material is sturdy, and the belt ensured that the shorts didn’t need to be adjusted a bunch of times during the hike. In contrast, I have some running shorts that I often wear, where even though they have a tie-able waist, the shorts slip downwards over time, especially when there’s stuff in the pockets. Didn’t have that problem at all with these shorts. Speaking of pockets, the front pockets are super deep, which is really nice and functional. There’s also a zippered pocket on the back although it’s smaller (big enough to fit cards). Also tried wearing the shorts over my chamois when mountain biking. They were great in terms of the fabric being durable and moisture wicking. However, they were a bit too short to provide the coverage I’d want for mountain biking. Would work great for a casual bike ride though. My only other gripe is that I noticed the shorts wrinkle easily. The attached photo is from the first time I wore them on the trip before riding, so all the wrinkles are just from being folded in my luggage. Doesn’t really matter for activewear but wanted to call it out.

Beautiful shorts but fit needs work

I'm torn on these. Color (Light Illusion) is beautiful, material is substantial, and the pockets and inseam length are great. Size guide is inaccurate for these shorts and the fit will probably be off for anyone remotely curvy/hourglass figured. I'm 5'7", 158 lbs, 31" waist, 41" hip and typically a size 10/30 in pants. The size Large in these shorts gaps in the waist and fits well (roomy but not too roomy) in the hip/thigh. The Medium fits well in the waist and is too tight everywhere else. I might keep the Large and just cinch them in the waist, but not sure if the bunching material will be annoying. The M has a 15.5" unstretched waist and 22" low hip, while the L has a 17" unstretched waist and 23" hip. This is at odds with Mountain Hardware's size guide, and generally speaking, I really wish retailers would include *garment* measurements for each item instead of body measurement guides (would really cut down on the environmental impact of unnecessary returns and exchanges!). I also noticed both pairs had fraying threads in multiple areas, which I would not expect at this price point (see image). So again, I'm torn! Lots to love but fit and quality control needs work.
