The latest great ultralight tote from Patagonia
For gram counters facing strict carryon weight limits (on my flights I am limited to 7kg combined for personal item underseat and overhead bag). This Terravia 24L convertible tote is slightly under 1lb and achieves that by eliminating almost all foam padding and no frame stiffener sheet or heavy back strap padding. Also by using “just thick enough” 70d on the main body, but a beefier fabric for the floor. Predecessors were the Ultralight Travel line and then the Black Hole designation but it wasn’t really due to lack of thick glossy rubberized treatment. Compared to the immediately preceding version, this is half an inch taller and half an inch narrower. This allows slightly more leg room under seat; thickness is the same. The description about secret panel on the rear is a little misleading; this is the panel that is used to tuck away the backpack straps if you don’t need them; so it is kind of secret when you have the backpack straps out, but when the back straps are in there, it’s obvious that there’s a Velcro closed panel. Finally, there is no Laptop compartment per se. For a laptop, you can either use the backpack straps panel or wrap it enclose in the main compartment; there’s not so much as an unpaused separator panel inside. The exterior vertical zipper panel is suitable for a tablet, but you will probably want to put in a cut down piece of foam or ultra thin kitchen, cutting board to provide some shock protection in case you knock the front panel against something. If you can afford an extra 12 ounces of weight, the Patagonia Refugio 26 L is a much sturdier option with a much better solution for carrying a laptop (and you can optionally ditch the included laptop case and save about 5 ounces of weight). The one difference is that this Terravia Will fold flat into your suitcase and a Refugio conventional day pack will not.
