Durable, but comfortable shorts with an odd fit
I loved a LOT about these shorts. They are durable, but comfortable. The zippered pockets and the reinforced seams and drawstring ties were nice. They feel like they will last FOREVER. I took them out on a few hikes on warm sunny days and they were comfortable and not stifling even though it was warm and the fabric is kind of thick. What I did not like was the bunching of the fabric in the crotch. It looked odd and the fit was a little big on my frame. I'm wearing a size 4 in the picture and am 5'2". I think they were great for the day hikes (6 milers on dirt, rock and mud) and might even be a nice bit of gear to have for a longer backpacking trip if the fit was better.
The unicorn of athletic shorts!
Yall. Give me these in a rainbow of colors. When I say these are the perfect adventure shorts, I truly mean it. I put these things to the TEST, and I mean it when I say, I have never worn a better pair of shorts ever. I took these shorts with me to Fiji, and admittedly, I packed poorly, so I ended up wearing these almost every day for 12 days straight (gross, I know). I wore them on boats, jungle hikes, on the beach, and all around. Despite my sweat, salt water exposure, rain, bug spray, all sorts of things that would have made my other shorts I own stink and be stiff and uncomfy, these stayed like day 1, plus a few stains. I think the ultimate test i put these up to was a jungle hike. Being a lady whose thighs rub together, I get hesitant when shorts get wet, cause that’s when my shorts start riding up. Let me tell you, despite sweat, rain storms, and river swims, these shorts stayed put. The zipper pockets and regular pocket combo was awesome for traveling and keeping items locked in and secured. I would truly buy 10 pairs of these. I love them.
Great product.
These shorts seem great! The material is soft and durable, nothing puffs out where it should not, and there are FOUR separate pockets, two of which have both a zipper and a foldover top. They are very comfortable and I can't wait for spring weather to wear them hiking! Sizing seems spot-on. My belly is my trouble area and the shape of the shorts, or the way they sit, masks this.
Cargo shorts that pack a punch
These shorts are durable and function like cargo shorts without looking bulky, when the pockets are not filled, or frumpy with misshapen pocket flaps. As such, you can wear them to run errands and they looks like regular black shorts or pack them full of necessities for hiking or camping. I got a women’s size 6 (M) and there is enough give in the elastic of the waistband to fit a size 8 (L). I usually wear a lot of running shorts or dolphin shorts and can really appreciate (unlike those shorts) that even when bending down, the cut and the length of these cargo shorts prevent it from exposing any thing in behind! Thus, I don’t have to be conscientious when packing or unpacking a campsite or have to wear tights underneath. I was curious to see how much these pockets can hold and without even using the side pockets, the two front pockets can hold: my wallet, car keys, small flashlight, sunblock, chapstick, 2 granola bars, trail mix, sunglasses with neck cord, earbuds, pocket knife, headlamp, 16 pro cell phone which has a dimension of in inches of 5.890h × 2.815w, and my hiking/travel first aid kit (paracord, lighter, bandaids, gauze, climbing tape, sing relief pads, petroleum, burn cream, hand sanitizer, and hydrocortisone packets). You probably would be taking this much out but it’s nice to know that if you needed to, you wouldn’t have to bring a bag.
Mixed Feelings
Cute enough shorts, but they run big imo. For reference, I am just shy of 5'3, maybe 115-117lbs, and ordered a size 4. There is tons of excess fabric in the back above my bum when I use the drawstring to tighten the waist, which makes the shorts look a bit off. The pockets are functional and nice, but the fabric is kind of noisy when walking, and rubs on my thighs.
Hi Lishy. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the Gamma Utility Short 5". We’re glad to hear the pockets were useful, though we understand the fit and fabric feel didn’t meet your expectations. We’ve shared your feedback with our team, especially around the fit through the back and fabric noise. We really appreciate you taking the time to let us know how they’re working for you.
Rough fabric and bunchy in crotch
Not a huge fan of these. I love the concept, but the fabric is quite stiff and not that comfortable. The crotch bunches in an unattractive way- you can see in some of the product photos. The fabric is durable and tough-- If they worked for me I would have bought them, even though they are expensive because they do seem like they would last a while.
Nice fabric
I'm undecided about these shorts. They might be a bit too short for me. They are a generous fit so I will order a size 8 (I am usually an 8 in most bottoms, but find Arcteryx a bit snug so I had ordered a 10). Quite a bit of fabric in the front of the shorts, so I need to see how the smaller size looks. Like the unique pockets and fabric.
Didn’t expect to love these as much as I do
I honestly thought these weren’t going to be for me - imagined the front pockets to be bulky… But honestly these might be my new faves, second to the Aestas which are my #1 all rounder shorts. These however would be my main pick for *hiking* for a few reasons: First, the material feels a bit more rugged and durable. Slightly thicker than the Aestas but not in a heavy or bulky way - more in a “I can bump into as many rocks and trees as I want” way lol. Also, the pockets are a win. The top-loading front pocket are amazing for keys and phones, the sides are angled nicely so things stay put. I do wonder if the side pockets would benefit from a zip? Maybe overkill. Also thank you for the drawstring. The onlyyyy reason that I give 4 rather than 5 is the tendency for the fabric to kind of bunch up at the lower back. Might be the booty effect or my own proportions but just something relatively benign and only aesthetic in nature that I’ve noticed.
Great pair of shorts
Didn't realize I was going to love these shorts as much as I did but they're absolutely great! Love using them for hiking and just walking around the city. They definitely have a tougher material but it makes them durable and they're waterproof.
Comfy and so functional
Wore them on the West Coast trail and they were so comfy, and I loved all the extra roomy pockets that made things really accessible so I didn’t have to take off my pack! I would love to get more in different colours if they were available
