Altra’s unique FootShape™ toe box and zero to low shoes are built to place your foot in a natural position, with a stable and confident foundation to run on. When fitting, be sure to allow a full thumb’s width in front of your toes. If your feet are used to cramped toe boxes, Altra shoes may feel a little big at first. Give your toes some time to get used to the newfound wiggle room.
Altra offers a range of FootShape fits:
Original Fit: The fit that started it all, Original is the roomiest of the 3 options from Altra.
Standard Fit: The most common fit from Altra is right in the middle of Original and Slim.
Slim Fit: The slimmest-fitting Altra option still allows room for your toes to spread out naturally.

Lone Peak has been my go to for trail running and backpacking for years. But unfortunately, Altra has ruined the best boot out there. The whole point of the Altra Lone Peak is zero drop, wide toe box, and very light. I don’t care if it wears out quickly. It was so comfortable and light I’m fine buying a new pair after 2-3 backpacking trips. But nes version if both the waterproof and non waterproof are heavier, narrower and higher on ankle. Completely opposite to the concept of the lone peak. If Altra wants to make a bigger more traditional boot, that’s fine, But keep the Lone Peak the same light, minimal boot it’s concept always was.
Very comfortable around the upper and ankle area right out of the box, which tends to be a problem with mid boots. Light weight. Grippy like all other Lone Peaks. There are some bad reviews that say they are too narrow but this isn’t the case for me. I believe my feet are on the wider side since I tend to wear minimalist zero drop shoes, and my toes tend to spread out. However, these fit perfectly. Highly recommend!
I bought these for snow adventures. I personally get hot easily. Insulated boots make my feet sweaty and uncomfortable. I was using the lone peak all weather goretex for snow and although they kept my feet dry, they were not warm enough. These lone peak 9 waterproof have enough cushion to keep my feet warm while allowing me to hike with light, comfortable boots. I used these for snow shoeing. Snow did not eventually soak them. To really test them out I took off the snowshoes and walked in snow to have the boot completely covered in snow. Still my feet were warm. I do need to clarify that for both this boot and the all weather lone peak I used the same medium weight wool socks. I also fell into the water with one of these on and although it was deep enough to get the inside wet, I continued on and my foot was not colt at all. When I tried an insulated boot of a different brand on with the same socks my feet felt too snug. No room for my toes to move. Altra wide toe box is amazing. I will only use these boots for snow days as I want them to last a long time. I will def buy these again or whatever model is out there when needed. The grip is great. They feel nice and sturdy. The boot dried overnight.
Unfortunately, these boots have completely ruined the Altra reputation for me. I typically love their trail shoes and boots because of the comfort, but I bought these specifically for waterproof capabilities, which lasted only one month. I’ve had them for two months now and my feet get completely soaked through the first few minutes I’m out in the rain with very slight puddles. I’m a dog trainer and am outside with the dogs, rain or shine.. I’m on my feet training all day.. my feet absolutely cannot afford to be getting so wet so early into my workday. The boots stay soaked inside for 4-5 days once they’ve been wetted. I’m truly disappointed and feel that I’ve completely wasted my money on these. As for this Altra boot model.. I absolutely do not recommend.
I’ve tried every mid hiker out there, even the previous versions of this shoe. Altra clearly listened and took action on improvement opportunities…. the clicking noise is gone, Ankle support much improved. Even ice fished in these and feet stayed dry.
First Altra pair. Huge Fan! The Altra Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid hiking shoes are everything I was looking for in a trail companion. I’ve been testing them on both challenging terrains and casual hikes, and they’ve exceeded my expectations in every way. Comfort That Lasts: Right out of the box, these shoes felt like they were custom-made for my feet. The balanced cushioning and Altra's signature wide toe box provided incredible comfort during long treks, allowing my toes to spread naturally and avoiding the usual hotspots or pinching I’ve experienced with other boots. Waterproofing Done Right: The waterproof construction is truly impressive. On a recent hike, I encountered muddy trails and shallow streams, and my feet stayed completely dry. Plus, the material is breathable, so I didn’t have to worry about overheating on warmer days. Traction and Stability: The grip on these is next-level. Whether it’s slick rocks, loose gravel, or wet forest trails, I felt confident in every step. The mid-height design offers added ankle support without feeling restrictive, which was a huge plus on uneven ground. Stylish and Functional: Not only do they perform well, but they also look great. The sleek design and subtle colors make them versatile enough for both outdoor adventures and casual wear. Final Thoughts: If you’re looking for a pair of hiking shoes that combine comfort, durability, and excellent performance, the Lone Peak 9 Waterproof Mid is a perfect choice. These have quickly become my go-to for every hike, no matter the conditions.
They fit a little different than the trail runners, but very comfortable. Light and supportive. I’ve been backpacking my whole life, and have always had issues with blisters. The first day wearing boots is always the worst, but these have me no blisters.
These fit nothing like the lone peak sneakers I have. They are shorter and, incredibly, narrower. The whole reason we buy these are because they are wide. Why mess with a successful recipe?
Excellent walking and hiking boots. Zero rise is greatly appreciated because it matches my pure walking shoes (reshod model). One serious quibble is that I needed to change the laces to loopfree laces because any loops would ultimately get caught by the hooks on the opposite foot - a falling hazard. Once that was done I used them on a walking trip to New Zealand and Australia and I had no problem. They are very comfortable, very stable, and great on slippery surfaces. They are also quite light, fully waterproof, and don't get hot in warm weather.
The water proof boots are my all-purpose travel, emtb, hiking and foot strengthening shoe. The fit more snuggly than the non water proof ones. I added some arch and metatarsal support and I couldn't be happier with these shoes. Altra should make a stiffer version and sell it as an mtb shoe. Best big toe mtb shoe out there! I LOVE LOVE these. So water proof. So comfy. Have done great by my problem foot.
