Sizing Notes

Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".

PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and Âľ inch shorter in total rise.

TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.

Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.

Inseam is measured to the floor.

Great for fat bodies - thank you REI
Annie
I tried to re-start my trail running hobby a couple years ago, but was foiled by the lack of apparel options in my size (~2x, 42" waste, 53" hips). I was forced to buy tights from a big box store that were not designed for running, and spent my first run holding them up as they migrated down my legs with every step. Then I bought "running" shorts from an online retailer, and spent that whole run with the inseam of the shorts bunched up between my thighs. Then I gave up, which sucks. I started to mainly mountain bike, as that sport does have some great plus size apparel brands. Now, I want to run again, so I checked out what REI had to offer and was pleasantly surprised. These pants are great - they're not super tight in the thighs or calves, so they don't migrate, and the drawstring waste band lets me cinch them as tight as I want. I love the gusseted crotch for comfort/chafing, and the material breathes well in the heat (I've been using these in the desert SW around 85 degrees). Lots of pockets is awesome, too. So thank you REI, this has been a positive shopping experience for technical apparel for my fat body. I don't often get to say that. However, I think you guys could go even further, and carry more sizes. Fat people have money too, and would love to buy clothes and gear that fit.

Different waistband from the old Swiftlands
cm23
I bought these to replace the old Swiftland pants, but I didn't find them to be as good. These are a true 7/8 length and hit just above my ankle, which I didn't mind, but the waistband on these is really different. The old Swiftlands had a wide waistband with an enclosed seam at the top, but these have zig-zag stitching at the top of the waistband. I found that the zig-zag stitching doesn't stretch as much as the rest of the waistband, so it digs in a bit at the very top, and it can feel just a bit itchy with the exposed stitching - I'm really sensitive to both those things. However, the fit through the legs was about the same (or better, if you didn't like the mid-thigh zip pocket on the old Swiftlands). In the end, they didn't work for me and I returned them in favor of the Athleta cargo tights. But, if you don't mind the length or the not-stretchy waistband top, they should work well!

General waistband grievances

Not sure how these will do for running/hiking because I don’t know if I can get over the waistband. I think this is my personal war with athletic clothes and my body type but I hate when the waistband has all the elastic and hold on the upper seam rather than dispersing the elastic throughout. It creates this unflattering and uncomfortable feeling at the upper seam, forcing my stomach to fold over. These leggings feel amazing otherwise and would be great if you have no waist or body fat. Sadly, I’ll probably return. I wish REI had more input from curvier women.

My new favorite sporty pants!

These running pants are super flattering and functional. They’re great for chilly morning dog walks/hikes/runs (I’ve run in 20-30 degree temps and have stayed nice and warm in these) and do a great job of wicking sweat while repelling rain and outside moisture. I love how lightweight and stretchy they are too! I bought the matching REI Active Pursuits Insulated Pullover and think the pants/pullover combo look super cute together! I’m 5’2” ~110 lbs and bought the XS but I think the S would fit someone my size well, too, if you like a bit of a looser fit.

Best Pants for Any Activity

These are my new favorite pants! They're just fitted enough that they look almost like leggings, but not so tight that I have to worry about them pulling down like leggings usually do for me. The waistband is flattering and has a draw string. I've worn them for running, walking, biking, hiking, and just running errands. I just recently wore them for a 10 mile run and they were so comfortable that I didn't think about them the entire time (which is huge for me because pants/shorts almost always bother me in some way). Highly recommend!!

These pants rock for pretty much any activity

What a great all-around pair of pants. I got a pair at the start of the winter because they are fairly windproof and looked great for walking my dog in the rain. And they were. Then I expanded and used them for Nordic skiing including some stuff in deep snow. Also great (but used with gaiters). I've been doing a bunch of winter conditioning hikes and winter alpine travel in them with a wool base layer and they are STILL GREAT. I've used them in conditions where my hiking buddies' clothes got soaked through, and I was very comfortable. Used them with a climbing harness - great. The fabric is terrific. I've washed them probably 40 times and they still look perfect. I'm petite so these are more pants-like on me than what I see in the website photos, but they still look great. I came back to order them in the other two colors. REI, please keep this style around!

Great in the rain!

I loveeee these pants! The fit is great.. I usually have a problem with riding up and the middle seam bugging me. I rarely find myself adjusting these compared to my other pants. They fit somewhere between a loose pant and a legging and they’re actually kind of flattering compared to other stuff on the market. I’ve only had problems with the ankle riding up slightly (like from sitting to standing). Having a tie on the waist band is actually so nice keeps the pants right in place. As for the technical part of them.. I ran a very wet and miserable 5k in them and I stayed dry. I mean like dumping rain, I could barely open my eyes that’s how hard it was raining. Their wicking aspect is also really nice. Honestly they’re worth the money. I’m actually lounging in them right now and loving them!

My favorite pants!

Hands down my favorite REI clothing item! I had 2 pairs of the older version and I was so happy REI brought them back. It's the perfect mix between a tight and a jogger. Perfect for cooler temps. I get compliments every time I wear them out. Great for hiking, running errands, or even just lounging! The sizing is pretty accurate as I am a 5'7, 130 athletic build and the small fits great. My only complaint is that they used to be $50 and so now $80 is kind of pricy in my opinion. BUT my current pairs have lasted over a year without any visible signs of use (and I can wear out some clothes!) I think it's worth the price but keep an eye out for REI sales and stock up!

Bummed

These pants are nearly perfect except...the calf area of the pants is cut way too wide. I don't understand this as they're already stretchy so there shouldn't be a need to cut an extra wide area into the calf area. It looks really silly and I guess I didn't quite anticipate how pronounced it would look when trying them on. REI, just go with a traditional tapered leg, not this goofy hourglass shaped weirdness. I'm still undecided if I'll keep them since they fit nice everywhere else and are a nice weight material. I'm overweight and have a large abdomen, 5'4 tall and the XL fits nicely other than the too wide cut of calf area in the pants.

Love them!

These are my new favorite running bottoms! I've bought 2 pairs and will probably buy another. They fit a little looser than leggings, but are so comfy and stay up perfectly while I am running. I can even fit my phone in the back zippered pocket, which is a perfect. I am 5'7" and they hit 7/8 length, but the seam at the bottom is not tight, so I don't mind. The adjustable waistband is also great as I am someone who has a hard time finding leggings that fit my waist & hips/thighs.
